United Airlines to serve up a new premium-cabin dining experience on North America flights

United Jamalaya (United)(LRW)

United Airlines (Chicago) has issued this statement:

United Airlines will treat premium-cabin customers on flights within North America to a brand new dining experience beginning February 1, when the airline elevates everything from entrees to desserts and lighter snacks for United First and United Business customers.

Additionally, United will expand North America premium-cabin meal service to include flights of at least 800 miles – or as short as two hours and 20 minutes – increasing the number of flights on which customers may enjoy meals. The airline will also offer a greater variety of dining choices.

These changes come as United is making a multi-million-dollar investment in in-flight food service.

Premium-Cabin Dining Changes

Created by United’s team of chefs and inspired by cuisine in the airline’s hub cities and other popular North American destinations, United will introduce flavorful new entrees, including cage-free scrambled eggs prepared skillet style with pepper-jack cheese, sauteed pepper mix, sliced New Mexico sausage, potato gratin and fire-roasted pepper sauce; lobster macaroni and cheese with a baked crumb topping and side of broccoli rabe; and chicken and sausage jambalaya with white rice and green onions.

Other changes include:

For short flights that offer lighter refreshments, the addition of new breakfast breads in the morning and a rotation of 25 new premium snacks in the afternoon and evening;

On meal flights less than four hours, a variety of enhanced breakfast choices, such as French toast souffle or steel-cut oatmeal, both paired with fresh fruit and Greek yogurt, plus new dinner selections, including tandoori chicken with basmati rice and paneer, to replace the current premium sandwich options;

An expanded mid-continental meal service on flights of four hours to five hours and 19 minutes, offering customers who now get two entree options a choice of three, such as creole shrimp served with Carolina grits, and a dessert of sorbet with mint-leaf topping during lunch or gelato or ice cream for dinner;

United Caprese of Asiago Baguette (United)(LRW)

New multi-course meal service on transcontinental and Hawaii flights, featuring heartier entrees, such as tamale-stuffed chicken wrapped in a corn husk and served with creamy corn sauce, roasted red and yellow tomatoes and yucca sticks, followed by sorbet during lunch or gelato or ice cream for dinner; and

Signature bake-on-board cookies in customer-chosen flavors, including triple-chocolate chunk, served for dessert on short- and medium-haul flights that offer meals, or as an afternoon or evening pre-arrival treat on transcontinental flights and flights that link Hawaii with Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver and Houston.

United Economy Premium Wines (United)(LRW)

United will also continue to offer premium-cabin customers Prosecco sparkling wine and – on lunch and dinner flights – the airline’s signature warmed nuts.

Air Serbia to fly to North America by the end of 2015

Air Serbia (Belgrade) is planning to launch long-haul routes to North America, including Chicago (O’Hare) and Toronto (Pearson) using Airbus A330s, starting in late 2015 according to EX-YU Aviation News quoting Serbianย Prime Minister, Aleksandar Vuฤiฤ‡ at a press conference. The PM also expects Air Serbia will soon be operating in the black, unlike the losses piled up by the former Jat Airways. Jat Airways in the past operated McDonnell Douglas DC-10s to North America.

Earlier this year EVA Air put out this statement on its North American expansion:

Starting in June 2014, EVA Air will increase North American service from 45 flights per week to 55, boosting frequency to Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver. By adding 22 percent more flights, EVA will also expand capacity, offer passengers greater convenience and provide more flights between North America and Taiwan than any other airline.

Since joining Star Alliance in June 2013, EVA has experienced growing demand for its services among business travelers. There has been a substantial increase in the numbers of business passengers flying the airline from North America to Southeast Asia via its hub in Taipei, Taiwan. Bookings for EVAโ€™s Royal Laurel Class business cabin have also climbed. The luxurious service was launched on the New York โ€“ Taipei route in June 2012.

The average load on EVAโ€™s North America flights surpassed 80 percent in 2013 and company officials expect bookings to keep climbing in 2014. It will accommodate this growth and the added frequency by taking delivery of three Boeing 777-300 ERs in the second quarter of 2014 and deploying the new aircraft on long-haul flights between North America and Taiwan. EVA will add the service in two phases. It will increase:

Phase 1

  • Vancouver from three to four flights per week on 2 June, 2014.
  • Los Angeles from 17 to 20 flights per week, New York from five to daily flights and Toronto from three to four flights per week on 4 June, 2014.

Phase 2

  • San Francisco from 12 to 14 flights per week and Los Angeles from 20 to 21 flights per week on 3 July, 2014.

North America is a major market for EVA. In addition to Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver, it operates five flights a week to Seattle/Tacoma. The airline has seen stable market-share growth in all six cities it serves, lifted by not only Chinese and Asian passengers but also American business travelers.

โ€ปEVA Frequency Increase in North America

City Current Frequency Added from New Frequency
Vancouver 3 per week 2 June 4 per week
Toronto 3 per week 4 June 4 per week
New York 5 per week 4 June 7 per week
Los Angeles 17 per week 4 June/3 July 20 per week/21 per week
San Francisco 12 per week 3 July 14 per week
