Silver Airways and United Airlines renew their code-share agreement

Silver Airways (United Express) (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and Gainesville, FL) and United Airlines (Chicago) have announced that they have reached agreement reaffirming the code-share relationship between the two carriers on service throughout Florida and the Bahamas. In addition, Silver Airways will continue to operate as an United Express carrier in their shared Mid-Atlantic hubs in Cleveland and Washington, DC (Dulles).

News of the renewed relationship follows a June 2013 release from Silver Airways announcing that it had successfully migrated to a new, stand alone reservations system and website powered by Sabre.

Silver Airways adds new service from Orlando, Tallahassee and West Palm Beach

Silver Airways (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and Gainesville) is addingย new international destinations and enhanced domestic air travel options beginning on November 21, 2013. The carrier will launch new nonstop service from West Palm Beach to North Eleuthera and Freeport in The Bahamas, two nonstop flights each weekday between Orlando and Tallahassee, and two nonstop flights each weekday between West Palm Beach and Orlando that will give business and leisure travelers the only nonstop service between West Palm Beach and Orlando.

Silver Airways will deploy SAAB 340Bย aircraft on its new routes. Silver operates the largest fleet of 34-seat SAAB 340Bย aircraft in North America.

Silver Airways to drop the Montana EAS contract

Silver Airways (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) has filed a 90-day notice with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) that it intends to drop its Montana routes under the Essential Air Service (EAS) program according to the Independent Record.

The airline will be required to operate the routes until a replacement carrier is located. The DOT has set a deadline of July 15 for the bids from other carriers. Silver Airways intends to move its Beech (Raytheon) 1900Ds from the Montana operation based at Billings, MT to the Cleveland operation.

Previously Great Lakes Airlines was outbid by Silver Airways (formerly Gulfstream International Airlines) for the EAS contract and may re-bid the contract.

Silver Airways to bring international service to Jacksonville on June 15

Silver Airways (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and Gainesville) will bring scheduled international service to Jacksonville on June 15. The regional carrier will start weekly JAX to Marsh Harbour service in the Bahamas according to Jacksonville.com on this day. The new route will be operated with SAAB 340B turboprops.

Silver Airways is coming to Macon, Georgia

Silver Airways (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) has been selected for Essential Air Service (EAS) authority to serve Macon, Georgia (MCN). The company expects to launch operations on April 1 to both Atlanta and Orlando (weekend only service) according to this report by The Telegraph.

Silver Airways’ CEO Darrell Richardson to retire after leading the company through its growth period

Silver Airways Corporation (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and Gainesville) announced that CEO Darrell Richardson (below) plans to retire from the company, capping a long and distinguished career in aviation. Mr. Richardson informed the Board of Directors of his decision and has received its full support. Silverโ€™s board of directors is actively conducting a search for a new CEO; Mr. Richardson will remain in a consulting capacity until a transition is finalized. Richardson has also accepted an offer to join the Companyโ€™s board of directors.

Matthew Ray, Chairman of the Board for Silver Airways, commented on Richardsonโ€™s retirement, saying: โ€œDarrell has played an integral role in building Silver Airways and we have realized many accomplishments under his leadership. His dedication and contributions, both strategically and operationally, have positioned us for continued future success. We now have a strong operating platform and bright future ahead. We could not be more thankful for Darrellโ€™s leadership.โ€

The former CEO of Air Turks & Caicos and Pace Airlines, Mr. Richardsonโ€™s career in aviation spans more than 40 years and includes posts with such notable former and current carriers as Continental, Air Florida and Mesaba Airlines, where he served as Chief Operating Officer from 1995 to 2000. He started his career with Piedmont Airlines in 1968 after earning a BSEE degree from the Cook Institute of Technology. Mr. Richardson also holds an MBA in International Business and Finance from the University of Miami.

Silver Airways has grown tremendously during Mr. Richardson’s tenure. The far-flung carrier’s (see route maps below) fleet has grown to 13 Raytheon (Beechcraft) 1900Ds and 17 SAAB 340Bs (25 by the end on March). The feeder airline has taken on abandoned routes and cities that many major carriers no longer wanted to operate to and from.

Silver Airways to add two Florida routes in January

Silver Airways (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and Gainesville) hasย announced it will further boost its intra-Florida network in January 2013 with the launch of two new routes: Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood-Orlando and West Palm Beach-Tampa. Flights along the new routes are on sale now for service beginning on January 7, 2013. Schedules are as follows:

Silver Airways comes to Atlanta and Washington Dulles tomorrow

Silver Airways (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and Gainesville) tomorrow (August 1) will expand its East Coast route network with the launch of its first-ever flights from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). New flights begin August 1 offering nonstop service from Atlanta to Gainesville Regional Airport (GNV), serving the Greater Gainesville and Alachua County area in northern Florida, and Greenbrier Valley Airport (LWB) in Lewisburg, West Virginia. On August 1 Silver Airways is also coming to Washington (Dulles). This will be theย first-ever flights from Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD) by Silver Airways. The new routes, which fall under the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) Essential Air Services (EAS) program, cover five gateways in West Virginia, two in Pennsylvania and one in Virginia as follows:

  • West Virginia โ€“ Beckley (BKW), Clarksburg (CKB), Lewisburg (LWB), Morgantown (MGW)
  • Pennsylvania โ€“ Altoona (AOO) and Johnstown (JST)
  • Virginia โ€“ Staunton/Shenandoah (SHD)

Silver Airways will operate its new IAD routes as United Express through its ongoing codeshare agreement with United Airlines. Schedule highlights include:

Silver Airways to operate as an United Express carrier at Washington Dulles

Silver Airways (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and Gainesville) as a follow-up to our previous report, will operate its new services this summer to Washington Dulles as an United Express carrier. According to AltoonaMirror.com the agreement has been finalized and was a deal breaker if not accomplished. Silver Airways will operate SAAB 340B aircraft on the routes into IAD from West Virginia and western Pennsylvania. It is still unclear if the SAABs will be operated in Silver’s colors or the United Express livery. Service is expected to start on August 1 and will replace Colgan Air.

From Dulles, Silver Airways will serve four communities in West Virginia and two in Pennsylvania as follows:

As of June 2012, Silver Airwaysย currently operates a fleet of twenty-one Beechcraft 1900D and fiveย SAAB 340B/Plus aircraft. Five of the twenty-one B1900D aircraft have been removed from service and replaced with the five SAAB 340B/Plus models. The remaining sixteen 1900D aircraft are in service.

Silver Airways currently serves four principal markets:

Florida intrastate routes, Florida routes to and from the Bahamas, Cleveland EAS routes, and Montana EAS routes. The Florida intrastate routes include Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood, Key West, West Palm Beach, Tampa, Gainesville, Tallahassee, and Pensacola. The Florida routes to and from the Bahamas serve Bimini, Freeport, Treasure Cay, Marsh Harbour, Eleuthera, Governorโ€™s Harbour, and George Town.

The Cleveland EAS routes serve Cleveland, Parkersburg, Lewisburg, Dubois, Franklin, Bradford, and Jamestown.

The Montana EAS routes serve Billings, Helena, Lewiston, Havre, Glasgow, Wolf Point, Sidney, Glendive, and Miles City.

During its second year, Silver Airways anticipates operations changes to its fleet,ย routes, maintenance, and infrastructure and bench strength. The Company expects continued replacement of the 1900D aircraft with the SAAB 340B/Plus aircraft. By the end of its second year, the Company will have replaced all of the 1900D models in its Florida and Bahamas markets, leaving four 1900D aircraft in its Cleveland market and four in its Montana market.

As stated above, on August 1, 2012, the Company will begin EAS routes out of Washington Dulles Airport operating to Altoona, Johnstown, Morgantown, Clarksburg, Shenandoah Valley, Beckley, and Lewisburg using three Saab 340B/Plus aircraft.

On October 1, 2012 the Company will begin EAS routes out of Atlanta operating to Hattiesburg, Meridian, Gainesville, Greenville, Tupelo, Muscle Shoals, and Lewisburg using three SAAB 340B/Plus aircraft. The Company may add additional routes as opportunities arise. The Company will continue to grow its in-house maintenance capabilities in Gainesville and will be adding the SAAB 340B/Plus heavy check program.

On the financial side, for the 12 months ending on April 30, 2012, the Company reported a net loss of $12.3 million on revenues of $88.9 million.

However the Company only had $3.6 million of unrestricted cash on hand at the end of the period.

Silver Airways to add a Washington Dulles base

Silver Airways (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and Gainesville) continues its expansion by adding new Essential Air Service (EAS) routes. According to Travel Daily News, the company will start a new base at Washington (Dulles) and serveย four communities in West Virginia – Beckley (BKW), Clarksburg (CKB), Lewisburg (LWB) and Morgantown (MGW) and two inย Pennsylvania – Altoona (AOO) and Johnstown (JST). The new IAD operation will start this summer and is in addition to the original Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood base, Billings, Cleveland and the recently announced Atlanta base.

In April 2012 Silver Airways tookย delivery of its fourth SAAB 340B. The carrier, which received United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval to operate the SAAB 340B aircraft type in March 2012, has secured agreements with SAAB Aircraft Leasing to purchase a total of 12 of the advanced turboprops. Silver Airways expects to integrate all 12 of its 34-seat SAAB 340B aircraft into its fleet by September 2012.

Named Lady Victory, the fourth SAAB 340B recognizes Victory Park Capital, the Chicago-based investment firm that now owns Silver Airways.
