Sunwing Airlines reaches a tentative agreement with its flight attendants union, averting a strike

Sunwing Airlines (Toronto-Pearson) has reached a tentative agreement with its flight attendants represented by the CUPE union.

The agreement will be submitted to members of the union for a vote following a round of general meetings in March. If accepted, this will be the first collective agreement for Sunwing flight attendants, who voted to join the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) in March 2012.

In early February, the union had raised the possibility of a strike at the end of March. With this tentative agreement, that scenario has been avoided.

The union will not comment on the details of the agreement until the conclusion of the voting period towards the end of March.

Sunwing Airlines to operate Edmonton-Cancun weekly flights

Sunwing Airlines (flysunwing.com) (Toronto-Pearson) has announced the addition of winter flights from Edmonton to Cancun, Mexico. The new flights will depart on Tuesdays, commencing on February 12, 2013 until April 9, 2013.

Sunwing inaugurates flights from Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Sunwing Airlines (Toronto-Pearson) on December 19 inaugurated seasonal service from Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray, Alberta to Puerto Vallarta, on Mexico”s magnificent Pacific coast.

All flights to Puerto Vallarta will operate on Wednesdays until March 20, 2013.

Vacation Express announces its 2013 charter schedule

Vacation Express (Atlanta) has announced its 2013 charter schedule. The public charter company will promote the following charters:

Atlanta-Cancun February 17 through August 4

Cincinnati-Cancun until October 20

Cincinnati-Puna Cana February 16 until October 19

Nashville-Cancun February 17 until August 20

New Orleans-Cancun May 26 until August 4

Flights will operate with Sunwing Airlines Boeing 737-800 or AeroMexico Boeing 737-700 aircraft.

Vacation Express is part of the Sunwing Travel Group Inc. (Toronto) hence the use of Sunwing Airlines aircraft.

Sunwing Airlines to fly to San Jose, Costa Rica for the winter

Sunwing Airlines (Toronto-Pearson) has announced the launch of new flights to San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO), in addition to its current flights to Liberia (LIR). Flights from Toronto (Pearson) will depart weekly on Fridays from December 21, 2012 to April 12, 2013.

Sunwing Airlines to serve Mexico from Fort McMurray and Grand Prairie

Sunwing Airlines (Toronto-Pearson) is adding new service from Alberta this winter with new flights from Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie with weekly Wednesday flights to Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit in Mexico with departures starting on December 19, 2012 through March 20, 2013.

Sunwing Airlines to fly the Toronto-Glasgow route starting on June 13

Sunwing Airlines (flysunwing.com) (Toronto-Pearson) will launch a summer seasonal route linking Toronto (Pearson) starting on June 13. Flights to Glasgow will operate weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with returns on Thursdays and Sundays, until September 9, 2012. All flights will be aboard the wide-bodied Boeing 767-300, which seats up to 300 passengers.

All flights to Glasgow will be operated on the “High Frills” Sunwing Airlines, where passengers are treated to the award winning Champagne Service, which includes a bon-voyage glass of champagne, hot towel service, a choice of hot meals at lunch and dinner served with choice of wine, and complimentary in-flight entertainment, including first run movies.

Sunwing Airlines expands into the United States by acquiring Vacation Express

Sunwing Travel Group (Toronto) announced the 100% acquisition of United States-based Vacation Express (Atlanta).

Vacation Express is one of the United States’ leading wholesale Tour Operators and has sold vacation packages to American travellers for over 22 years. It markets vacation packages to destinations and resorts in the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America, most of which are also served by Sunwing and Signature. Its holiday packages are sold by travel agencies across the USA, with departures available from all major cities. Although it has a national presence, Vacation Express’ main strength continues to be in serving the south-eastern states and the mid-West, with its peak selling period being the Summer months, counter-seasonal to Canada.

This acquisition will allow Sunwing Airlines to have a more even revenue flow throughout the year, especially during the slower summer months in Canada.

ALPA objects to temporary pilots being imported in the winter to fly Canadians south

Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) of Canada is objecting to a Canadian law which permits charter airlines like Sunwing Airlines (Toronto) from bringing in temporary pilots during its busy winter season. The Canadian chapter of ALPA believes Canadian pilots can be trained for this annual upswing according to this article by The Vancouver Sun. Sunwing leases in extra aircraft during its winter season and increases its flight schedule.
