American Airlines, fed up with Venezuela, drops the number flights to Venezuela

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) is fed up with Venezuela and its socialist government which is forcing carriers to keep their ticket sales in the country’s currency, the Bolivar. Airlines are unable to export the proceeds. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, American was owed $750 million from its Venezuela sales through March 31 (probably higher today).  As a result, American is slashing the number of weekly flights from the current 48 to only 10 starting next month. Air Canada and Alitalia have also ended service to Venezuela.

WestJet partners with Panasonic for new inflight entertainment

WestJet (Calgary) has announced it has signed a multi-year agreement with Panasonic Avionics Corporation to provide the airline with a new inflight entertainment system with the ability to feature wireless satellite internet connectivity, live streaming television, on-demand movies, magazines and more.

Guests will be able to use their own personal electronic device (PED) or laptop computer to receive live and stored content streamed wirelessly from a server on board each WestJet Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft. Tablets will be available for those guests not travelling with a device.

WestJet will also install USB/110 volt power outlets in new, slimmer seats on its aircraft to enable guests to charge their devices or keep them charged while using the entertainment system. And, with a mix of free and paid content, the new system offers the airline additional ancillary revenue opportunities.

There are currently 275 airlines around the world using a Panasonic inflight entertainment system. Panasonic will install the system on one WestJet Boeing Next Generation aircraft before the end of 2014 at which time the airline will perform tests to fine-tune the system. When installed on WestJet’s fleet over the next several years, guests will be able to access live television, movies, magazines and the internet throughout North America, the Caribbean and Central America, Europe, as well as future WestJet destinations.

Southwest Airlines to add Split Scimitar Winglets to its 85 Boeing 737-800s

Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) today announced that Southwest Airlines (Dallas) has ordered Split Scimitar Winglets for its Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 aircraft.  APB’s newest program is the culmination of a five-year design effort using the latest computational fluid dynamic technology to redefine the aerodynamics of the Blended Winglet into an all-new Split Scimitar Winglet. The unique feature of the Split Scimitar Winglet is that it uses the existing Blended Winglet structure, but adds new strengthened spars, aerodynamic scimitar tips, and a large ventral strake.  APB looks forward to receiving FAA certification for Split Scimitar Winglets later this month.

By upgrading its Boeing Next-Generation 737-800s with Split Scimitar Winglets, APB estimates that Southwest will increase its annual fuel savings of approximately three percent per aircraft from Blended Winglets to approximately five percent per aircraft annually with the Split Scimitar Winglet upgrade. In addition to lowering Southwest’s fuel costs, the Split Scimitar Winglet will reduce emissions, supporting Southwest’s commitment to efficiency and to the Planet.

Southwest’s order of 85 Split Scimitar Winglets allows the airline to retrofit the 52 Boeing 737-800s currently in its fleet, in addition to the 33 Boeing 737-800s the airline expects to be delivered in 2014. Pending FAA certification, Southwest Airlines plans to begin Split Scimitar Winglet retrofits at Aviation Technical Services, based in Everett, Washington, in the first half of 2014, with an expected completion of all retrofits by early 2015.

APB’s Split Scimitar Winglet program is the most successful product launch in its history.  Since launching the program early last year, APB has now taken orders and options for 1,451 Split Scimitar Winglet systems. Over the last 10 years, APB has sold more than 7,000 Blended Winglet Systems.  Over 5,100 Blended Winglet Systems are now in service with over 200 airlines in more than 100 countries. APB estimates that Blended Winglets have saved airlines worldwide over 4 billion gallons of jet fuel to-date.

Air Austral to resume Reunion Island-Mahe, Seychelles service on June 23, 2014

Air Austral (Sainte-Denis, Réunion Island, Indian Ocean, France) will resume twice-weekly Réunion-Mahe flights on June 23, 2014. The route was suspended in May 2013.

Nok Air and Scoot to operate a medium and long-haul low-fare airline

Nok Air (Nok Airlines Public Company Limited) (Bangkok-Don Mueang) and Scoot (subsidiary of Singapore Airlines) (Singapore) on December 13, 2013 signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to start a new low-fare airline named NokScoot Company Limited. The MOU is subject to final negotiations and approval process.

Nok will hold 51 percent of the shares and Scoot will control the other 49 percent. Nok means “bird” in the Thai language.

The objective of the proposed airline is to operate a low-cost airline with wide-body aircraft on medium and long-hail international routes.

Spring Airlines Japan to start operations on May 31, 2014

Spring Airlines Japan (Spring Airlines Japan Company Limited) (Tokyo-Narita), which was established in October 2012 and 33 percent of the stock is owned by Spring Airlines of China, received its Air Operators Certificate (AOC) on December 17, 2013 from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The remaining 67 percent of the stock is owned by local Japanese investors.

The new airline is planning to fly international flights and domestic flights starting on May 31, 2014.

According to the airline, Spring Airlines Japan will offer “cheap fares, with the aim to improve the convenience of the user and to stimulate new demand with the aim of development of the business, not only in tourism but will continue to contribute to the revitalization of the local economy.”

The airline will utilize 189-seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft (above).

Domestically the low-fare airline will operate from Narita Airport to Takamatsu and Saga to Hiroshima.

SAS Group posts its first full-year net profit since 2007

SAS Group (Scandinavian Airlines-SAS) (Stockholm) after fighting to stay out of bankruptcy, has posted its first full year net profit since 2007.

After making massive cuts to positions and salaries, the company reported a net profit of $27.3 million for its fiscal year ending on October 31. The company still remains a high cost airline and it expects weaker conditions to continue.
