Freedom Airlines (Mesa Air Group) loses its court fight with Delta Air Lines

Mesa Air Group (Phoenix) announced on May 17 that the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia had ruled against its subsidiary Freedom Airlines in its lawsuit against partner Delta Air Lines. The ruling now clears the way for DL to end the contract.

Freedom began operating as an Delta Connection carrier with Embraer ERJ 145s from Orlando in October 2005. On April 7, 2008, Mesa Air Group, the parent of Freedom Airlines, sued Delta concerning its contractual obligations. Delta attempted to terminate the ERJ 145 contract due to alleged failures to meet its completion goals in three of the last six months of operations. On May 29, 2008, a federal judge blocked Delta from terminating Freedom’s contract which, according to parent company, would have forced it to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection by July 20, 2008 and cut 700 jobs or 14 percent of its work force. Since then, the ERJ 145 fleet has been reduced to 22 operating aircraft along with five spares.

Delta to expand the Delta Shuttle to Chicago O’Hare with ERJ 175s

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) is launching a new business shuttle service with 11 daily round-trip flights between New York (LaGuardia) and Chicago (O’Hare), replacing existing, less-frequent service between LaGuardia and Chicago (Midway).

Delta’s new hourly shuttle service between New York (La Guardia) and Chicago (O’Hare) will beginย June 10ย and replace existing flights between LaGuardia and Chicago (Midway). ย The flights will operate between Delta’s convenient Marine Air Terminal at LaGuardia and O’Hare’s Terminal 2.

In advance of the launch, Delta will install new dedicated Shuttle check-in and self-service kiosks at O’Hare, which will become a new Delta Shuttle station. The kiosks feature the ability to purchase tickets for travel that day to LaGuardia, replicating the speed and convenience that customers enjoy in other Delta Shuttle markets. ย The airline also will assign theย Chicago-New Yorkย flights to dedicated gates located nearest to O’Hare’s Terminal 2 security checkpoint and offer complimentary morning coffee, tea and newspapers to customers departing from these gates.

Flights on this route will be operated withย Embraer ERJ 175 regional jets (probably operated by subsidiary Compass Airlines) equipped with 12 seats in First Class and 64 seats in Economy Class. Both cabins are configured with no middle seats. Delta’s enhanced onboard Shuttle product will be offered in both classes, including meals in First Class, and, in economy, bagels on departures beforeย 10 a.m.ย and complimentary wine andย Sam Adamsย beer.

It is still unclear if the Embraer ERJ 175s will carry the standard “Delta Connection” titles or new “Delta Shuttle” titles.

In other news Delta is expanding operations at Los Angeles (LAX) with new service to four destinations.ย Delta’s new service betweenย Los Angelesย International Airport and four U.S. cities adds to the airline’s previously announced summer expansion plans fromย California, including new nonstop flights betweenย San Diegoย andย Honolulu;ย Sacramentoย andย Detroit, and increased service betweenย Los Angelesย andย Mauiย and Memphis.

The new flights betweenย Los Angelesย andย San Franciscoย will operate daily. Theย Columbusย flight will operate daily, while theย Hartfordย andย Raleigh-Durhamย flights will operate Sunday through Friday, beginningย June 10..

Each of Delta’s new flights will offer customers First Class and Economy Class service, and will be operated on a mix ofย Boeingย 737-800,ย Airbusย A320 and Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft.
