Norwegian Air Shuttle today released this statement:

Norwegian today reported its full year and fourth quarter 2018 results, figures strongly affected by engine issues, fuel hedge losses and tough competition in a period of strong growth. The net loss was NOK 1.454 millionย ($169.3 million) in 2018, while the companyโ€™s unit costs, excluding fuel, have decreased by 12 percent during the same period.

The key priority going forward is returning to profitability through a series of measures, including an extensive cost reduction program, an optimized route portfolio and sale of aircraft. The company is also strengthening its balance sheet through a fully underwritten rights issue of NOK 3 billion in order to increase its financial position.

The company was hit by several unforeseen challenges during 2018. Continued tough competition and high jet fuel prices affected the results, in addition to significant costs related to Rolls Royce engine issues on the Dreamliners. Norwegian was forced to wetlease aircraft to avoid delays and cancellations on intercontinental flights. Norwegian has now reached an agreement with the engine manufacturer, which will have a positive effect in 2019. The Dreamliner operation is now running smoothly, and we donโ€™t foresee that engine issues will affect our service going forward. Going into 2019, Norwegianโ€™s growth and investments will decrease considerably, and a series of initiatives have been undertaken to return to profitability this year.

The companyโ€™s total revenue was more than NOK 40 billion, an increase of 30 percent compared to 2017. A total of 25 brand new aircraft entered the fleet, contributing to a production growth (ASK) of 37 percent. The load factor was 85.8 percent and more than 37 million passengers chose to travel with Norwegian, an increase of 13 percent compared to the previous year.

Fourth quarter results

For the fourth quarter, the total revenue was NOK 9.7 billion, an increase of 23 percent from the same period last year, primarily driven by international growth as well as increased traffic in the Nordics. More than nine million passengers flew with Norwegian this quarter, a growth of 12 percent. The load factor was 80.9 percent. The company incurred losses of NOK 1.8 billion on its current hedge positions in Q4. Some of the loss has since reversed due to the latest increase in the jet fuel price. The companyโ€™s unit costs, excluding fuel, decreased by 14 percent compared to the fourth quarter in 2017.

โ€œWe have taken a series of initiatives to improve profitability by reducing cost and increasing revenue going forward. We have optimised our base and route structure to streamline the operation as well as divested aircraft, postponed aircraft deliveries and not least started an internal cost reduction program, which will boost our financials and bring us back to profitability,โ€ said CEO of Norwegian Bjรธrn Kjos.

โ€œGoing into 2019, we will enter a period of slower growth and fewer investments, while constantly looking for new and smarter ways to improve our efficiency and offer new products and services to attract new customers,โ€ Kjos added.

Norwegian sells two Airbus A320neo aircraft, launches an upgraded WiFi service on European flights

"Aksel Sandemose, Norwegian author"

Norwegian has made this announcement:

Arctic Aviation Assets, a subsidiary of Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA, has signed an agreement for sale of two Airbus 320neo aircraft.

The aircraft are currently leased out and thus not operated by the Company. Delivery will take place during February 2019. The transaction is expected to increase the Company’s liquidity by $26 million after repayment of debt and have a positive equity effect. Sale proceeds will be used to repay debt and to increase the Company’s liquidity.

The sale is in line with the Companyโ€™s strategy of capitalizing on the scale built up over the last few years and the changed focus from growth to profitability. This announcement is an extension of the information provided in the stock exchange announcement โ€œNorwegian strengthens its balance sheet through a fully underwritten rights issue of NOK 3 billionโ€ on 29 January, where sale of aircraft was highlighted as a measure to reduce capital expenditures, in addition to postponement of aircraft deliveries.

In other news,ย Norwegian is continuing to enhance the passenger experience by commencing the rollout of new and improved inflight WiFi connectivity onboard the airlineโ€™s Boeing 737-800 fleet.

Norwegian, named Europeโ€™s Best Low-Cost Airline by SkyTrax, was the first airline to offer passengers free in-flight WiFi on all European flights in 2011. The airline became the first to introduce live television over the skies of Europe in 2015 and in 2018 it took delivery of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner equipped with inflight WiFi. Norwegian became the first low-cost airline to offer customers free WiFi for the full duration of intercontinental flights.

Today, Norwegian has launched an upgraded WiFi experience on its Boeing 737-800 aircraft as part of improving the customer experience. Norwegian operates Boeing 737-800 aircraft on intra-European routes, routes connecting Europe with North Africa, Middle East and on flights between the USA and French Caribbean.

Norwegian will gradually roll out the new Premium WiFi service across its Boeing 737-800 fleet and expects to complete the rollout in mid-February 2019.

Three Wi-Fi packages available

Customers travelling on a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with the new Premium Wi-Fi service available will have a selection of three packages โ€“ SURF, the free option and two paid options, SOCIAL+SURF and STREAM+SURF, both offering faster speeds.

  • SURF โ€“ Available for free, delivers web browsing, email and text-based messaging
  • SOCIAL+SURF โ€“ Provides faster web browsing, access to email and all social media. Available for โ‚ฌ5 per device. (Pricing may be subject to change.)
  • STREAM+SURF โ€“ Offers faster web browsing, email access and social media in addition to the ability to stream TV shows, movies and music content on services such as Netflix, YouTube and Spotify among others. Available for โ‚ฌ12 per device. (Pricing may be subject to change.)

Norwegian recently started introducing WiFi to its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and Boeing 737 MAX fleet. Here, customers have two choices โ€“ Basic free Wi-Fi for the full duration of long-haul flights and a premium high-speed option, fast enough to stream television shows and movies.

Norwegian expects to have the rollout of WiFi completed on 50 percent of its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft by 2020.

Norwegian operates a young fleet of more than 160 aircraft with an average age of 3.7 years.

Norwegian to offer free WiFi on Boeing 787-9 and 737-8 MAX 8 fleet

Norwegian is upgrading the passenger experience with the introduction of inflight WiFi on its growing long-haul fleet of aircraft. As the first low-cost carrier to introduce free WiFi on intercontinental flights, Norwegian customers will be able to stay connected with the rollout of basic and premium high-speed WiFi connectivity on the carrierโ€™s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and 737 MAX aircraft.

The first WiFi connected Norwegian Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft was delivered on December 18, 2018 (reg: G-CKWP) and features American author Mark Twain on its tailfin. The new aircraft has entered service, which marks the first time Norwegian passengers can experience free inflight WiFi for the full duration of long-haul flights.

Video:

Norwegian became the first carrier to offer free WiFi on all European routes in 2011 and the first European airline to successfully offer live television in the skies in 2015. Since 2013, Norwegian has rapidly grown to become a leading long-haul airline offering more than 60 long-haul routes between Europe, the United States, South America and Asia serviced by modern, state-of-the-art, fuel-efficient aircraft.

Norwegian Air’s US route map for the summer of 2019:

More than 50 percent of Norwegianโ€™s 787-9 Dreamliner fleet is expected to offer in-flight connectivity by 2020. The rollout of WiFi on the airlineโ€™s Boeing 737 MAX aircraft will commence from mid-January 2019.

โ€œWeโ€™re continuously improving the inflight customer experience and weโ€™re delighted to be the first airline offering free WiFi for the full duration of long-haul flights. Millions of Norwegian customers have already enjoyed free WiFi over the skies of Europe and now long-haul passengers can continue to rely on free and high-speed internet connectivity that will enhance and personalize their journeys. From being the first European airline to launch free WiFi on all short-haul flights followed by free live television, Norwegianโ€™s rollout of high-quality inflight broadband services will offer business and leisure travelers even greater value at affordable fares,โ€ saidย Vice President Business Development Boris Bubresko, Norwegian.

Passengers will enjoy fast speed internet using the wireless inflight connectivity platform, CabinConnectโ„ข by Collins Aerospace. Passengers will have highly secured access to content through CabinConnect including their favorite shows, inflight map and voice and messaging services through their devices.

CabinConnect uses the Inmarsat Global Aviation (GX) satellite network, specifically designed to offer passengers consistent, reliable high-speed global inflight connectivity. Inflight WiFi works via an antenna fitted to each aircraft fuselage that communicates with Inmarsatโ€™s GX satellite network.

โ€œWe are collaborating with Norwegian to achieve their vision of optimizing their aircraft and enterprise operations to address both cabin and flight deck requirements, as well as adding new capabilities for the future,โ€ said LeAnn Ridgeway, Vice President of Information Management Services at Collins Aerospace.

In 2019, five brand new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and 19 737 MAX aircraft will join Norwegianโ€™s fleet. Norwegian currently operates 24 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners as part of its overall Dreamliner fleet of 32 aircraft.

Two packages โ€“ Basic and Premium inflight WiFi

Norwegian economy and Premium customers on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and 737 MAX will have the choice of two inflight WiFi packages:

Basic option

The Basic option is free and will allow customers to browse the web, stay-up-to-date on social media, send and receive emails and instant messages with friends, family and colleagues by using their personal mobile phones, tablets and laptops on board for the full length of the flight.

Premium option

Fast enough to stream music, movies and television shows on Netflix, YouTube and Hulu among others, Norwegian will offer passengers a Premium high-speed WiFi option.

Premium high-speed WiFi will be available at an introductory price of $14.95 USD for a three-hour package. Customers can select their preferred currency when choosing the WiFi package.

Benjamin Franklin to be the first American tailfin hero for Norwegian

Norwegian Air Shuttle (Norwegian.com) has started the process of “Americanizing” the tails of some of its newest aircraft despite the on-going pushback by U.S. majors and unions of their expanding lower-cost service to the United States. Norwegian issued this statement and image:

Norwegian has announced Benjamin Franklin as its first American tailfin hero. The inventor and statesman, who was often called the โ€œfirst Americanโ€ because of his tireless campaigning to unify the colonies, will adorn the airlineโ€™s newest Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The new American hero will serve the new transatlantic routes from Edinburgh, Belfast, Cork, Shannon and Dublin to the US East Coast.

Since its founding, Norwegian has always honored iconic, historical figures on the tails of its aircraft. Each person who is featured on a tailfin embodies Norwegianโ€™s spirit of pushing boundaries, inspiring others and challenging the status quo. To commemorate Norwegianโ€™s expansion in the United States, the airline will introduce a series of American icons over the next few months. Norwegian now offers 23 direct routes to the U.S. from six airports in the UKย and Ireland.

Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston, Massachusetts and relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in his late teens where he later started a successful printing business. Additionally, he was an inventor, statesman and a leading figure in American history. Franklin is best known as one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and authors of the Declaration of Independence.

The new aircraft featuring Benjamin Franklin is Norwegianโ€™s fourth Boeing 737 MAX aircraft this year. In total, Norwegian will take delivery of two additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft from the 110 it has on order. The airline operates one of the worldโ€™s youngest fleets with an average age of just 3.6 years.

Norwegian is Europeโ€™s third largest low-cost carrier, carrying 30 million yearly passengers to more than 140 global destinations.

In other news,ย Norwegianโ€™s first transatlantic flights using the brand-new Boeing 737 MAX took off from Edinburgh this past weekend, with British aviation maverick Sir Freddie Laker featuring as the aircraftโ€™s tail fin hero (EI-FYA) (above).

The pioneer of low-cost long-haul travelโ€™s portrait is emblazoned on the tail fin of Norwegianโ€™s brand new 737 MAX, Boeingโ€™s newest aircraft type. The Sir Freddie Laker 737 MAX departed Edinburgh for the first time on Saturday evening to Hartford, Connecticut and serviced yesterday afternoonโ€™s flight from Edinburgh to Stewart Intl. in New York.

Norwegianโ€™s brand new 737 MAX offers up to 189 seats and a longer range which allows the airline to serve smaller cities on both sides of the Atlantic and offer truly affordable fares. The airline always honours iconic figures on the tails of its aircraft, featuring personalities who reflect the spirit of Norwegian through innovation, pioneering achievement and inspiring others.

Sir Freddie Laker was born in Canterbury in 1922 andhad a long career in aviation, working for aircraft manufacturer Short Brothers, delivering military aircraft during World War Two, and setting up several airline ventures post-war. Sir Freddie was best known for founding Laker Airways and the โ€˜Skytrainโ€™ service which first took to the air in September 1977, offering flights from London Gatwick to New York JFK for the then ground-breaking fare of ยฃ59.

Laker was a popular public figure and knighted by the UK Government in 1978 for services to the airline industry. As one of the first people to challenge established airlines by applying a โ€˜low-costโ€™ model to air travel, Laker set the template for the many โ€˜low-cost carriersโ€™ that dominate modern-day aviation โ€“ his pioneering approach also coming long before the huge benefits of efficient new aircraft, the internet marketplace and more liberalised industry that modern airlines can now take advantage of.

Sir Freddieโ€™s legacy has been a clear inspiration to Norwegianโ€™s own low-cost long-haul growth which has now expanded to more than 50 transatlantic routes between Europe and the U.S. Last month, Norwegian launched 12 new routes from the UK and Ireland to the US East Coast, using the brand-new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

Additionally,ย Irish Antarctic explorer Tom Crean (above) has taken to the skies this weekend as a brand new aircraft featuring Norwegianโ€™s first ever Irish tail fin hero went into service for the first time.

The explorerโ€™s portrait appears on one of Norwegianโ€™s brand new 737MAX aircraft (EI-FYB) which is flying for the first time this weekend. The Tom Crean aircraft took off from Belfast International Airport on Saturday afternoon, landing in Stewart International Airport in New York last night. Earlier this morning, the aircraft landed back in Dublin Airport and will fly back to New York later on Sunday afternoon.

Norwegian has always honored iconic figures on the tails of its aircraft, featuring personalities who symbolise the spirit of Norwegian through innovation, pioneering achievement and inspiring others.

The Tom Crean tail fin appears on Norwegianโ€™s brand new 737MAX aircraft which will serve new transatlantic routes from Cork, Shannon and Dublin which began earlier this month.

Born in County Kerry in 1877, Tom Crean joined the Royal Navy aged just 15, quickly becoming recognised as an accomplished sailor. In 1901, a chance encounter with Robert Falcon Scott saw Crean join Captain Scottโ€™s ship โ€˜Discoveryโ€™ for an exploration into the unchartered Antarctica waters โ€“ it would become the first of several polar expeditions undertaken by Crean that led him to become known as one of Ireland’s greatest Antarctic explorers.

It was during one of these missions that Crean undertook his โ€˜Impossible marchโ€™ and what became recognised as the greatest act of bravery in Antarctic exploration history. Having been on the march for 1,500 miles, one of Creanโ€™s companions collapsed 35 miles from safety โ€“ Crean volunteered to go for help, completing a final 18 hour leg of the journey alone through sub-zero temperatures. Creanโ€™s solo exploits saved his companion and saw him awarded The Albert Medal for his heroism by King George. Crean would also go on to receive the Polar Medal three times for his Antarctic endeavours.

Creanโ€™s modest and humble personality meant that it is only in recent years that his extraordinary career received widespread public recognition, including a bestselling book about his life and even a Guinness TV advert created in his honour. Nicknamed the โ€˜Irish Giantโ€™ for his strength and stature as well as his leadership qualities, Crean perfectly captures the essence of Norwegianโ€™s tailfin heroes.

Norwegian continues its fleet renewal

Norwegianยดs fully owned subsidiary Arctic Aviation Assets (AAA) has ordered two new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. In addition, AAA today signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) for a sale-leaseback transaction of 11 Boeing 737-800 aircraft currently operated by Norwegian.

Norwegian has exercised its options to order two new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft that will be delivered during 2018. Following this announcement, AAA now has a firm order of 110 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and 90 remaining purchase options. The LOI for sale-leaseback of 11 aircraft is expected to reduce the Norwegian Groupโ€™s financial net debt by approximately NOK 1.4 billion based on the currency exchange rate NOK/USD of 8.5.

On May 4, 2017, Norwegian announced the sale-leaseback of eight new Boeing 737-800 aircraft to be conducted in the second quarter. Following the sale of 19 aircraft (eight new deliveries and 11 existing), the Norwegian Group estimates a positive net cash flow impact on of approximately NOK 2.3 billion. These aircraft will be leased back to Norwegian me.

โ€œBy selling some of our older 737-800 aircraft and ordering two additional 737 MAX aircraft, we are taking another step towards replacing our current fleet with even more fuel efficient and more environmentally friendly aircraft. This allows us to enhance our operation and reap financial benefits. Norwegianโ€™s strategy is to operate and own the newest state-of-the-art fleet of aircraft, giving passengers high-quality comfort and the shareholders as high a return as possible,โ€ said Bjรธrn Kjos, CEO of Norwegian.

In other news,ย Norwegian has announced that Jonathan Swift will become its second Irish tail fin hero, with the celebrated authorโ€™s portrait to appear on the tail of the airlineโ€™s aircraft that will serve the new transatlantic routes from Cork, Shannon and Dublin to the US East Coast.

Norwegian has always honored iconic figures on the tails of its aircraft, featuring personalities who symbolise the spirit of Norwegian through innovation, challenging the norm and inspiring others. To reflect Norwegianโ€™s rapid growth and new routes from Ireland, the airline has begun a series of Irish tail fin heroes. Jonathan Swift will become Norwegianโ€™s second Irish hero, following legendary explorer Tom Crean who wasย announced earlier this year.

Born in Dublin in 1667, Jonathan Swift was a poet, author and journalist best known for his satirical novel Gulliverโ€™s Travels and for his satirical essay on the Irish famine โ€˜A Modest Proposalโ€™. Swift studied at Trinity College in Dublin before spending time in England where he wrote A Tale of a Tub published in 1704. During this time Swift also decided upon a career in the clergy and was ordained as a priest in the Church of Ireland.

His greatest known work – Gulliver’s Travels, a book of fantasy, satire, and political allegory -, was written in 1725 and published in 1726. The book was a great success and contributed to Swift’s fame and legacyย as a writer and social commentator.

The portrait of Jonathan Swift, which will be used to adorn the tail of a Norwegian aircraft, has been taken from an oil painting of the author by Charles Jervas painted in 1875. From July, Norwegian will launch aย series of new low-cost transatlantic routes from Cork, Shannon and Dublin. The flights will serve smaller airports on the US east coast which offer good access into the New York, Boston and New England areas but carry significantly lower landing charges, allowing Norwegian to offer some truly affordable fares.

Norwegian is Europeโ€™s third largest low-cost carrier, carrying 30 million yearly passengers to more than 140 global destinations.
