Qatar Airways unveils its new 2022 FIFA World Cup special livery, will bring the Airbus A350-1000 to Farnborough

"FIFA 2022 World Cup - Official Airline Partner"

Qatar Airways announced on social media:

Kick-starting the final leg of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, as weโ€™ve unveiled a new FIFA livery freshly painted on one of ourย Boeing 777 aircraft. We are ready for take-off to the 2022 World Cup.

The airline also released this statement:

Qatar Airways, an Official Partner and the Official Airline of FIFA, has taken its celebration of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia to the skies with a specially-branded Boeing 777 aircraft painted in FIFA livery, ahead of the tournamentโ€™s Semi-Final and Final match.

The bespoke aircraft, which features distinctive FIFA branding, was hand-painted in Ireland and flown to Doha, where a press conference was held at Hamad International Airport before the aircraft flew to Moscow just in time for the tournamentโ€™s Semi-Final and Final matches.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said: โ€œWe are tremendously excited to celebrate our passengersโ€™ love for football by bringing this unique, one-of-a-kind aircraft to Moscow. As Official Partner and Official Airline of FIFA, we are proud to be able to unite football fans from around the world in Russia, helping them to experience the magic of the FIFA World Cup. This beautiful aircraft further cements our commitment to our important partnership with FIFA, as well as our loyalty to millions of football fans around the globe who have gathered in Russia to cheer their teams on.

โ€œWe look forward to celebrating in the upcoming days with fans, both in Russia and around the world.โ€

Engr. Badr Mohammed Al Meer, Chief Operating Officer at Hamad International Airport stated: โ€œAs we prepare for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar, we are thrilled to witness our national carrier celebrate the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia with this truly unique and spectacular aircraft. This moment encapsulates the spirit of the FIFA World Cup, celebrating football, art and culture on an international scale.โ€

Qatar Airways kicked off its celebration of the tournament by teaming up with singer and TV starย Nicole Scherzinger for a re-recording of the classic song ‘Dancing in the Streets’, which resulted in an upbeat and infectiously fun-filled โ€˜musicalโ€™ style TV commercial. The song expresses the airlineโ€™s firm belief that sport is a universal language, which has the power to inspire and encourage people to follow their dreams, with the commercial having a global reach to date of 2.6 billion people.

In December 2017, Qatar Airways launched daily services to the cultural capital of Russia, St. Petersburg, doubling the number of Russian routes operated by the carrier. The addition of St. Petersburg to Qatar Airwaysโ€™ route map demonstrates the importance of the Russian market to the carrier, which has been flying to Moscow since 2004. The award-winning airline currently operates three daily flights between Moscow and Doha, in addition to a daily flight between St. Petersburg and Doha.

In April, Qatar Airways signed an MoU with Moscowโ€™s Vnukovo International Airport, Russiaโ€™s third-largest airport, committing to a potential acquisition of up to 25 per cent of the airportโ€™s total shares, complementing the strong ties established with the country, and in support of the airlineโ€™s existing investment strategy.

In other news,ย Qatar Airways has announced that the new Airbus A350-1000 (above) will be on display at this yearโ€™sย Farnborough International Airshow, taking place from July 16-22 in Hampshire, United Kingdom.

The award-winning airline will showcase its ultra-modern Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 777, both equipped with the award-winning, luxurious Qsuite Business Class seat. Unveiled last year, the patented Qsuite features the first-ever double bed in Business Class, as well as sliding panels that transform the space into a shared area customisable for groups of two, three, or four, allowing passengers to tailor their in-flight experience to meet their specific needs.

Qatar Airways will also display the Air Italy Boeing 737 Max 8 โ€“ the first aircraft to feature the recently rebranded airlineโ€™s striking new livery. The new Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft offers modern and spacious cabins, superior operating economics as well as greater fuel efficiency. The aircraft was recently unveiled in Seattle and delivered to Milan on its inaugural flight, signaling a new era in aviation for the people of Italy.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said: โ€œQatar Airways is delighted to be returning to this yearโ€™s Farnborough International Airshow. It has already been an incredible year for us, having been the Global Launch Customer for the Airbus A350-1000 in February. The six aircraft on display at Farnborough, including the A350-1000, the B777, and the Air Italy Boeing 737 Max 8, are the most technologically advanced aircraft in the skies today, and we look forward to welcoming visitors to Farnborough to experience them first hand.โ€

The airlineโ€™s cargo division will also publicly display one of its freighter aircraft for the first time at Farnborough International Airshow. The Boeing 747-8 freighter gives cargo operators the lowest operating costs and best economics of any large freighter airplane while providing enhanced environmental performance. It is optimised to provide greater revenue cargo-carrying capability than the Boeing 747-400, offering 16 per cent more cargo volume while keeping its unique nose door. The Boeing 747-8 freighter is also a popular choice of charter aircraft especially for oversized cargo. Qatar Airways Cargo is the worldโ€™s leading international cargo carrier, serving more than 60 exclusive freighter destinations worldwide, with many recent additions to its freighter network, including Pittsburgh, Phnom Penh and Yangon.

The fifth aircraft to be displayed at the airshow will be the Qatar Executive Gulfstream G500 jet. Qatar Executive, which provides VVIP charter on-demand-services to an elite clientele, continues to grow its global reach, serving worldwide destinations from New York to Shanghai. To support its ambitious expansion plans, Qatar Executive continues to increase the size of its fleet, and plans to take delivery of up to 25 additional aircraft between now and 2022, a combination of G500, G600 and G650ER jets.

The sixth and final aircraft to be displayed is the JetSuiteX Embraer 135 jet. The luxuriously reconfigured Embraer 135 offers 30 comfortable Business Class style seats, making it the ideal solution for group charters. In April 2018, Qatar Airways announced that it had taken a minority stake in JetSuite, Inc. and indirectly in JetSuiteX, Inc. JetSuiteX, the sibling company to JetSuite, offers semi-private air service on the U.S. West Coast and beyond. JetSuiteX fills a niche in underserved short-haul markets and small airports, and enjoys a Net Promoter Score over 90, higher than the major U.S. airlines. JetSuiteX operates its fleet of Embraer 135 aircraft from private terminals in California and Nevada, with no lines, no waiting and no stress, at a price competitive with commercial travel.

Qatar Airways recently launched direct services to both London Gatwick and Cardiff airports, strengthening Qatar Airwaysโ€™ presence in the United Kingdom. Passengers in the United Kingdom can now choose from up to 95 flights per week, including six daily departures from London Heathrow, 16 weekly from London Gatwick and Manchester, and daily flights from Cardiff, Birmingham and Edinburgh.

Qatar Airways has revealed a host of upcoming new global destinations, including the announcement that it will be the first Gulf carrier to begin direct service to Luxembourg. Other exciting new destinations to be launched by the airline include Tallinn, Estonia; Valletta, Malta; Langkawi, Malaysia and Da Nang, Vietnam.

New setup for Eurowings Group; Eurowings and Brussels Airlines to have new roles

Brussels Airlines Airbus A330-343 OO-SFX (msn 1085) IAD (Brian McDonough). Image: 933802.

Eurowings Group issued this statement:

  • Brussels Airlines set to become long-haul competence center of Eurowings Group
  • Eurowings airline will be responsible for the short-haul business of the Eurowings Group
  • Eurowings Group CEO Thorsten Dirks: โ€œNew strategic setup puts us at the helm of European airline consolidationโ€

After first successes of joint projects, Eurowings and Brussels Airlines will take the next decisive steps in the integration process, defining each otherโ€™s roles within the Eurowings Group.

Taking the expertise and strengths of both entities into consideration, Brussels Airlines will become the long-haul competence center of the Eurowings Group, steering all long-haul activities of the entire group out of Brussels. Next to that, the airline will actively participate in the Eurowings Group pan-European growth strategy by becoming the operator for the expansion to other airport bases in the French- and Dutch-speaking part of Europe.

โ€œThe successful launch of Eurowings long-haul flights operated by Brussels Airlines out of Dรผsseldorf to New York, Fort Myers and Miami last April, reconfirms the long-haul expertise of the Brussels based airline,โ€ said Eurowings Group CEO Thorsten Dirks. โ€œIn only five months Eurowings and Brussels Airlines have managed to set up a long-haul base at Dรผsseldorf, strengthening the group in one of its key German airports,โ€ he added.

In parallel, Eurowings โ€“ focusing on European point-to-point traffic โ€“ will steer the entire short-haul portfolio of the Eurowings Group from Cologne.

Dirks: โ€œJoining forces with Brussels Airlines will not only strengthen our position as the #3 low-cost carrier in Europe but also spur further Eurowings Group growth in the futureโ€, specifies Thorsten Dirks.

Both airlines will continue to operate long-haul and short-haul flights out of their respective bases Brussels, Cologne, Dรผsseldorf and Vienna.

This also means that even though two competence centers are being created at Brussels and Cologne, there will remain functions for both long-haul and short-haul operations at both locations. Implementation of the new setup is planned for 2019. Eurowings Group already operates from more than 20 European bases today.

“Brussels Airlines is recognized for its expertise and for the value it adds to the Eurowings Group. We will continue building on our assets to become an even more important player within the group, while remaining Belgium’s strong home carrier and continuing to focus on our guests,” adds Christina Foerster, CEO of Brussels Airlines.

Eurowings Group CEO Thorsten Dirks is confident that this new teamwork structure under the umbrella of Eurowings Group is the right strategic step to meet future challenges. โ€œThe scattered European aviation landscape is beginning to consolidate โ€“ the new structure of Eurowings Group will make it possible for us to be at the helm of this development.โ€

Teamsters: Pilots vote to authorize strike at Allegiant Air

Allegiant Air Airbus A320-214 WL N247NV (msn 7704) BWI (Tony Storck). Image: 941920.

Theย International Brotherhood Of Teamsters issued this statement:

Pilots at Allegiant Airโ€”one of the country’s most profitable airlinesโ€”voted with 93.5 percent support to authorize a strike should it become necessary.

The vote comes in response to Allegiant’s years-long refusal to live up to its commitments and fix a sham scheduling system that has negatively impacted the lives of many pilots and their families.

Voting took place over a one-week period from June 29 to July 6 and was conducted online via a third-party election management provider.

A strike could result in cancellations out of major hubs including Las Vegas, Phoenix and Fort Lauderdale and impact thousands of passengers.

An airline that has made headlines for its bare minimum approach to business, Allegiant made the unilateral decision to force its pilots to use a homemade scheduling system that goes against industry standards and disregards pilots’ seniority and preferencesโ€”often upending pilots’ planned time away with their families. A growing number of Allegiant pilots have been leaving the company for other airlines that respect the basic needs and interests of pilots.

“We are people with spouses and children, not cells on a spreadsheet that Allegiant executives can move around with no rhyme or reason,” said Captain Andrew Robles, an Allegiant Air pilot and Executive Council Chairman at the pilots’ union, the Airline Pilots Association, Teamsters Local 1224. “Striking is a last resort, but we’ll do whatever it takes to hold Allegiant to its promises and to make our airline the best it can be for our pilots, our families and our passengers.”

Allegiant pilots have been raising concerns about the scheduling system for years. In 2016, the pilots and Allegiant reached an agreement requiring that they negotiate and implement a new system within 180 days. Allegiant has again stonewalled that negotiation process and recently backed out of its prior agreements with the pilots over terms for the new scheduling system.

Allegiant customers have felt the effects of the company’s bare minimum approach to business. In June, Allegiant canceled dozens of flights in and out of major airports across the country after Allegiant failed to deliver Airbus planes on time, affecting thousands of passengers’ travel plans.

“Allegiant has a long track record of breaking its commitments to its pilots and we’ve had enough. Allegiant executives are acting in complete and utter bad faith in failing to negotiate a fair, industry-standard scheduling system,” Captain Robles said.

Allegiant Air is one of the most profitable commercial airlines in the U.S. with 60 consecutive profitable quarters. Its executives are among the highest compensated in the industry, with the company CEO โ€“ and largest shareholder โ€“ taking home tens of millions in shareholder returns in recent years. The company enjoyed a $74 million windfall as a result of the recent tax bill.

Etihad Airways launches dedicated in-flight guest medical services

United Arab Emirates – Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has launched two specialised services for air travellers with pre-existing medical conditions, ensuring continuity of care and in-flight safety.

The one-stop-shop services โ€“ the first in the region to be offered by an airline โ€“ will be carried out by members of the Etihad medical team, all of whom are qualified in aviation and transport medicine.

The first service allows guests, who require medical clearance prior to travel, the opportunity to request an Etihad aviation doctor to visit them and conduct an evaluation in consultation with their attending physician.

All medical forms and assessments will be completed by the Etihad doctor on-site, leading to a recommendation about their โ€œfit to flyโ€ status within one day.

The second service is the introduction of an in-flight nurse who can accompany guests during their trip and provide medical support.

Dr. Nadia Bastaki, Etihad Airwaysโ€™ Vice President Medical Services, said: โ€œEtihad is delighted to be the first airline in the region to provide these new medical services which will cater for guests who require medical assistance during their travel.

โ€œBoth services will help ensure our guests have a smooth and hassle-free journey, greatly removing unnecessary anxiety they sometimes feel when travelling.โ€
