Remembering the Past: Trans Caribbean Airways

"Peter Jonathan II" - Delivered December 16, 1963

Trans Caribbean Airways (TC) was founded on May 18, 1945 by O. Roy Chalk.

Headquartered in New York, the airline started charter operations in December 1945 with two war surplus Douglas C-47s (DC-3s).

Larger Douglas DC-4s were acquired in 1946.

The airline specialized in offering low-fare flights to San Juan and the rest of the Caribbean.

Miami – San Juan DC-4 flights started in August 1946.

Three Douglas DC-6As are acquired and military charters commence.

Following CAB supplemental authorization, TCA started low-fare operations on the competitive New York – San Juan route on March 8, 1958.

In 1962, TCA joined the jet age. A Douglas DC-8 is leased from Seaboard World.

A larger DC-8-61 is added supplemented by leased Boeing 707s and 720s during the busy winter seasons from Aer Lingus.

Above: April 28, 1968 timetable via timetables.com.

Flights from Newark to San Juan started in 1968.

1969 Route Map:

Boeing 727-100s and 727-200s were added.

Spiraling into financial troubles after a Boeing 727-200 crash landing at St. Thomas, the struggling airline is acquired by American Airlines on March 1, 1971.

As a result, AA gained a foothold in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean and never looked back.

airBaltic reopens cargo operations from Kyiv, A220 on tour around Asia

airBaltic hasย announced that in cooperation with UkrPoshta it has organized a multimodal mail transportation system and thus reopened cargo operations from Kyiv, Ukraine.

First mail shipment from Kyiv arrived in Riga on April 12. Since then the company has handled more than 7 000 mail bags from Ukraine with a total weight of over 50 tons.

In other news,ย airBaltic isย participating in an aircraft manufacturer Airbusโ€™ย demonstration tour around the Asia-Pacific region showcasing its latest A220-300 aircraft. During the tour, airBalticโ€™s A220-300 will visit a total of four destinations in the region.

The first three stops of the tour were Sydney, Australia, Singapore and Hanoi, Vietnam. The aircraft will then visit Tokyo, Japan. At each stop, invited guests are welcome to tour the aircraft, attend product briefings by Airbus executives, as well as take part in a short demo flight.

Thus far, airBaltic has carried nearly 8 000 000 passengers on the Airbus A220-300 aircraft. Airbus A220-300โ€™s have completed more than 92 000 flights and flown over 200 000 block hours.

Since May 2020, airBaltic operates all its flights with a single aircraft type โ€“ Airbus A220-300, thus minimizing the complexity and benefiting from the additional efficiency provided by the aircraft. The airlineโ€™s fleet now consists of 34 A220-300 aircraft with six more planned to join in 2022.

The Airbus A220-300 has performed beyond the companyโ€™s expectations, delivering better overall performance, fuel efficiency and convenience for both passengers and the staff. This aircraft offers an excellent flying experience with such benefits for passengers as wider seats, larger windows, more hand luggage space in the cabin, improved lavatories and much more.

The Airbus A220-300ย has a high-quality air filtering system equipped with High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) type filter that provides the best level of filtration currently available for recirculated cabin air from the very beginning of boarding, during entire flight and until all passengers have left the aircraft. The quality of cabin air is carefully controlled and is recirculated with ventilation rates that provide a total change of air 20-30 times per hour.
