United officially opens its Flight Academy

United Aviate Academyโ€™s first class of students is 80% women or people of color, outpacing the airlineโ€™s goal to train about 5,000 new pilots at the school by 2030 with at least half being women or people of color

Unprecedented training commitment will dramatically expand access to lucrative and rewarding careers while upholding Unitedโ€™s world-class safety and training standards

United CEO Scott Kirby, United President Brett Hart, and other officials on hand at Phoenix Goodyear Airport to officially open new school and welcome students

United, the only major U.S. airline to own a flight training school, officially opened United Aviate Academyย today and welcomed a historic inaugural class of future pilots, 80% of whom are women or people of color. United Aviate Academy is a key part of the airlineโ€™s goal to train about 5,000 new pilots at the school by 2030, with at least half women or people of color. This unprecedented training commitment will dramatically expand access to this lucrative and rewarding career while upholding Unitedโ€™s world-class safety standards.

Last summer, United unveiled its ambitiousย United Nextย strategy to revolutionize the United flying experience and introduce more than 500 new, narrow-body aircraft into its fleet to match the anticipated resurgence in air travel. United plans to hire at least 10,000 new pilots by 2030 to meet this need with about 5,000 of those coming from United Aviate Academy.

United Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby and United President Brett Hart were joined today by Federal Aviation Administration Deputy Administrator Brad Mims and other government officials at the Phoenix Goodyear Airport to welcome the new students. The group also outlined Unitedโ€™s plan to help break down some of the barriers to entry through targeted recruiting, strategic partnerships and scholarship and financial aid solutions.

โ€œOur pilots are the best in the industry and have set a high standard of excellence,โ€ said Kirby. โ€œRecruiting and training even more people who have that same level of talent, motivation and skill is the right thing to do and will make us an even better airline. I couldnโ€™t be prouder of this first group of students and look forward to meeting the thousands of talented individuals who will pass through these doors in the years to come.โ€

Unfortunately, for many people becoming a pilot seems not only out of reach financially, but completely unimaginable. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 5.6% of pilots are women and 6% are people of color. Earning a commercial pilot’s license in the U.S. can cost about $100,000 and becoming an Airline Transport Pilot requires 1,500 hours of flight time, which requires a significant commitment.

United and JPMorgan Chase & Co. have renewed last yearโ€™s commitment to fund nearly $2.4 million in scholarships for future aviators attending United Aviate Academy. The airline also directly works with the following organizations to educate prospects about the benefits of becoming a pilot and to find candidates for scholarship opportunities:

  • Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals
  • Sisters of the Skies
  • The Latino Pilots Association
  • The Professional Asian Pilots Association

United currently has about 12,000 pilots, and Captains of Unitedโ€™s Boeing 787s and 777s can earn more than $350,000 per year. In addition, United pilots receive one of the highest 401(k) matches in the nation โ€“ 16% of base pay.

United Aviate Academy expects to train at least 500 students annually as one part of United recruiting as the carrier works toward hiring at least 10,000 pilots by 2030. Aviation consulting firm Oliver Wymanย estimatesย a worldwide pilot shortage of 34,000 aviators by 2025.

United Aviate Academyโ€™s first class is undergoing a year-long training program that sets them up for a career that reflects Unitedโ€™s high standard of professionalism and deep commitment to delivering a safe, caring, dependable and efficient travel experience. After completing their training at the academy, students can build flight and leadership experience while working within theย Aviateย pilot development ecosystem at partner universities, professional flight training organizations and United Express carriers on their way to becoming United pilots.

โ€œAs a United pilot for more than 32 years, it’s exciting to see these new students earning their wings and beginning their aviation careers, and Iโ€™m looking forward to them joining me on the flight deck one day,โ€ said United Chief Pilot Mary Ann Schaffer. โ€œWe need more pilots and a more diverse pool of young aviators, and United Aviate Academy will help us achieve both goals.โ€

United worked closely with multiple organizations, cities, and elected officials to help make the academy a reality for aspiring pilots who otherwise may not have pursued a career in aviation. The airline extends its gratitude to Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and his office; the Arizona Commerce Authority; the City of Phoenix and Mayor Kate Gallego; and the City of Goodyear and Mayor Joe Pizzillo and the late Mayor Georgia Lord.

United Aviate Academy

The 340,000 square-foot United Aviate Academy facility at Phoenix Goodyear Airport includes world-class features such as:

  • Leasing a fleet of late-model Cirrus SR-20 series single-engine aircraft, which feature advanced safety characteristics
  • Nearly 50,000 square feet of office space
  • Multiple aircraft hangars
  • Dormitory rooms for student housing with ample room for expansion
  • Proximity to many auxiliary airfields in the Phoenix area
  • Favorable weather for year-round flight training

These shared values are why weโ€™re especially proud to celebrate Team USA athletes on their journey to the worldโ€™s biggest sporting stage. For all of us at Delta, itโ€™s a privilege to connect these athletes with their dreams,โ€ Mapes added.

  • Handwritten messagesย of encouragement and cheer from Delta employees, also displayed in a mural installed at LAX and digitally throughout the airport.

China Airlines orders four additional Boeing 777F freighters

China Airlines Cargo Boeing 777F B-18772 (msn 66891) LAX (Michael B. Ing). Image: 956590.

China Airlines and Boeing today announced the Taiwanย flag carrier has ordered four 777 Freighters, adding to its extensive fleet of Boeing airplanes. Valued atย $1.4 billionย at list prices, the order will enable the airline to capture new market opportunities as global air cargo demand continues to grow.

In 2021, China Airlines’ air cargo revenue was up 186% above the pre-pandemic year of 2019, which nearly balanced out a 96% drop in passenger revenue. Last year China Airlines Cargo recorded the best year in its history โ€“ overย TWD 100 billionย (USDย $3.6 billion) in revenue โ€“ by leveraging its existing all-Boeing fleet of (18) 747-400 Freighters and (3) 777 Freighters. With (3) 777 Freighters already on order, China Airlines’ 777 Freighter is the perfect complement to the airline’s existing 747-400 Freighter fleet, seamlessly accommodating the 3-meter (10-foot) tall pallets and maximizing flexibility for its air cargo operations.

Previously China Airlines Cargo issued this statement:

2021 proved a record-setting year for the China Airlines Cargo team. Even as the impact of COVID-19 was felt all around the world, China Airlines switched to a cargo-centric business model that put its fleet of 21 freighters to full use. The non-stop movement of cargo kept the economic lifeblood of Taiwan and the world flowing. Some of the records set by Cargo in 2021 included making over a hundred cargo charter flights in one month, surpassing TWD 15.4 billion in single-month cargo revenues in December, exceeding TWD 10 billion in cargo revenues for five consecutive months, and sweeping past TWD 100 billion in cargo revenues for the entire year. 2021 was in fact the best-ever year in Cargo’s 62-year history.
As national airlines fought to survive, China Airlinesโ€™ elite team of 800 cargo employees around the world showed that they were able to aggressively expand the freight network. More than a thousand pilots flying around the clock as well as the full support of maintenance, ground crews and other units saw China Airlinesโ€™ Cargo business surge to new heights during the COVID-19 pandemic. Together, a fleet of 21 freighter aircraft including three newly introduced 777F freighters and the existing eighteen 747-400F freighters helped China Airlines strengthen its competitiveness in the air cargo industry. Through team work, Cargo made around 540 freighter flights per month or an average of 120 flights per week. The integration of passenger and freighter capacity along with continued optimization of schedules and connections meant that over a hundred passenger and freighter charter flights were dispatched in a given month. Total revenues broke all past records and single-month cargo revenues of more than TWD 10 billion represented a new peak that boosted China Airlinesโ€™ ranking in the global cargo industry.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the air cargo market has undergone structural changes. In addition to the transportation of epidemic prevention supplies, China Airlines continues to ensure the continuity of supply for economic growth goods and everyday necessities ranging from auto parts, semiconductor chips to actual vehicles and high-precision wafer machinery. Shortages in sea cargo capacity meant that e-commerce, textile and other industries that traditionally went by sea now relied upon air cargo as well. COVID-19 spurred the rapid growth of the stay-at-home economy and a jump in online shopping. Fitness equipment, vacuum cleaners, gaming consoles, boutique handbag brands, and even machines for mining digital currency are just some of the goods carried aboard cargo charters. China Airlines is continuing to track and respond to the latest market developments through timely adjustments of flight schedules and rosters. Such initiatives ensured China Airlinesโ€™ survival amidst the epidemic and generated cargo revenues in excess of TWD 100 billion.
The inability to travel overseas and enjoy gourmet food during the pandemic led to a surge in demand for fresh and perishable goods. The professional cargo team at China Airlines โ€œkept things freshโ€ for the people of Taiwan by transporting bulk quantities of meats and seafood including Wagyu Beef from Japan, and lobsters from North America and Australia. Dairy products, frozen desserts, fruits and vegetables such as fresh flowers from Kenya in Africa, melons from Hokkaido in Japan, grapes from California in the U.S.A, along with yogurt and honey from Australia were transported as well. China Airlines’ world-spanning cargo network is now flying fresh and perishable products from across the world to food lovers in Taiwan.
As the first airline in Taiwan to receive the CEIV Pharma certification for pharmaceutical cold-chain logistics, China Airlines is also known for its professional cold-chain logistics management and transportation experience. In addition to transporting COVID-19 vaccines purchased by Taiwan, China Airlines also successfully delivered vaccines to countries in Southeast Asia and Oceania. More than 75 million doses of COVID-19 weighing over 350 tonnes have been transported to date, demonstrating China Airlinesโ€™ spirit of social responsibility and humanitarian assistance. Additionally, the rapid growth of China Airlinesโ€™ cold chain transportation business has seen a jump in the use of temperature-controlled containers. In 2021 more than a thousand temperature-controlled containers were transported by China Airlines, which represents a growth of more than 100% compared to that of pre-pandemic levels.
China Airlines was the first airline in Asia to receive a rating outlook of โ€œstableโ€ from S&P Global Company. In the future, China Airlines will continue to focus on its cargo operations, closely monitor developments in the passenger market, and carefully review its passenger market strategy, as it works to maximize its operational profits.
