Malaysia Airlines resumes flights from Penang to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, will restart Firefly

Malaysia Airlines has announced it has recommencedย  flights from Penang to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu beginning December 2021 to March 2022 as demand for domestic travels starts to show a positive trend following the relaxation of interstate travel ban and the upcoming year-end holidays.

These routes will soon be served by the airlineโ€™s sister company, Firefly from April 2022 onwards, resuming its jet operations based in Penang which was suspended since April 2021 due to prolonged movement control order that resulted in poor demand. This move complements the Malaysia Airlines in serving the leisure market while diversifying Fireflyโ€™s base connecting secondary cities in Malaysia to East Malaysia.

On December 2, the inaugural flight MH2721 from Penang arrived in Kuching International Airport at 9:55 am (above) and was welcomed with a water cannon salute, followed by cultural performances at the terminal. YB Datoโ€™ Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawakโ€™s Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture and representatives from Malaysia Aviation Group, including Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar, the Chief Operating Officer of MASwings handed out souvenirs to passengers upon disembarkation.

Group Chief Executive Officer, Captain Izham Ismail of Malaysia Aviation Groupย said,

โ€œMalaysia Aviation Group plays a unique role in stimulating the travel and tourism industry. We are honored to recommence our flight operations connecting key domestic sectors namely Penang, Sabah and Sarawak.

Firefly will soon be resuming its jet operations to serve these key domestic sectors. This move is very timely as air travel gradually picks up domestically and we are ready to serve business or leisure travelers with the connectivity they need. With the resumption of Fireflyโ€™s jet operations, customers will enjoy a flexible service concept โ€“ with product unbundling to suit the leisure focused and price-sensitive customers, providing a more significant value proposition

With these direct flights from Penang to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, coupled with additional frequencies from Kuala Lumpur serving the routes, we are confident that this connectivity will reinvigorate domestic tourism for Malaysiaโ€™s largest secondary cities.โ€

The airline currently utilizes the Boeing 737-800 aircraft on both routes and operates four times weekly for Penang-Kota Kinabalu and two times weekly for Penang-Kuching routes.

airBaltic issued this statement:

IATA: Government response to Omicron threatens emerging recovery

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that the recovery in air travel continued in October 2021 with broad-based improvements in both domestic and international markets. It also warned that the imposition of travel bans by governments, against the advice of the WHO, could threaten the sectorโ€™s recovery.

Because comparisons between 2021 and 2020 monthly results are distorted by the extraordinary impact of COVID-19, unless otherwise noted all comparisons are to October 2019, which followed a normal demand pattern.

  • Total demand for air travel in October 2021 (measured in revenue passenger kilometers or RPKs) was down 49.4% compared to October 2019. This was improved over the 53.3% fall recorded in September 2021, compared to two years earlier.
  • Domestic markets were down 21.6% compared to October 2019, bettering the 24.2% decline recorded in September versus September 2019.
  • International passenger demand in October was 65.5% below October 2019, compared to a 69.0% decline for September versus the 2019 period, with all regions showing improvement.

โ€œOctoberโ€™s traffic performance reinforces that people will travel when they are permitted to. Unfortunately, government responses to the emergence of the Omicron variant are putting at risk the global connectivity it has taken so long to rebuild,โ€ said Willie Walsh, IATAโ€™s Director General.

Indiaโ€™sย domestic market saw a 27.0% decline in October demand compared to October 2019 โ€“ greatly improved from a 40.5% fall in September following the easing of some control measures.

Russiaโ€™sย October domestic traffic was up 24% compared to October 2019, which was deceleration from the 29.3% growth recorded in September 2021 over the two-year ago period, attributable to a strong wave of COVID-19 and the start of the winter travel season.

The Bottom Line

โ€œThe lifting of the US restrictions on travel from some 33 countries last month raised hopes that a surge in pent-up travel demand would buoy traffic over the coming Northern Hemisphere winter. But the emergence of the Omicron variant panicked many governments into once again restricting or entirely removing the freedom to travelโ€”even though WHO clearly advised that โ€˜blanket travel bans will not prevent the international spread, and they place a heavy burden on lives and livelihoods.โ€™ The logic of the WHO advice was evident within days of Omicronโ€™s identification in South Africa, with its presence already confirmed in all continents. The ill-advised travel bans are as ineffective as closing the barn door after the horse has bolted,โ€ said Walsh.

Last month, IATA released aย Blueprintย (pdf) to help guide governments in safely re-opening their borders with data-driven decision-making. Specifically, IATA urged governments to focus on three key areas:

  • Simplified health protocols
  • Digital solutions to process health credentials
  • COVID-19 measures proportionate to risk levels with a continuous review process

โ€œAdditionally, governments must address the terrible disparity in vaccination rates that has seen theย developedย world offering boosters at a time when less than 10% of the African continent is fully vaccinated,โ€ said Walsh.
