Finnair to fly to 70 destinations this coming winter

Finnair has made this announcement:

Many countries are opening travel as vaccination coverage increases. Finnair has now updated its offering for September-October and forย theย winter season 2021/2022 (November โ€“ March)ย to meet theย needs of its travel-hungry customers.ย Destinations forย autumn and winter includeย Canary Islands, with flights starting already in Septemberย as well asย Miami and Thailandย in the winter season. Altogether, Finnair flies to some 70 destinations during winterย 2021/2022.

โ€œThe travelย restrictions continue to impact air travel,ย but many countries are openingย for tourismโ€, saysย Ole Orvรฉr, Chief Commercial Officer at Finnair. โ€œWhen planning our offering, we have taken into account the favoriteย destinations and holiday seasonsย of our customersย โ€“ย for example,ย we will reopen flights to Miami and offer great connections to Thailand, Southernย Europe as well as to Scandinavia.โ€

The Finnish Lapland continues to attract travelers, and in September Finnair offers frequent flights to Kittilรค and Ivalo in northern Finland โ€“ great destinations to experience the wonderful autumn colors of Lapland. Frequencies to Scandinavia are increased in October when Finnair flies to Oslo and Copenhagen three times per day, making one day business trips smoother.

During the winter seasonย Finnairย will flyย daily to New York and threeย times a weekย to Miami and Los Angeles. Bangkok, Phuket and Krabi will be in the offering for Thailand. Altogether 70 destinations will be operated in the winterย season, andย Finnair flies to forย example Alicante, Malaga and Nice throughout the winter.

As the offering for the late autumn and winter season is updated,ย adjustmentsย alsoย willย occur. Finnair will contact those customers affected directly. Customers can either opt for a full refund or to be rerouted if possible.

โ€œCompared to a normal situation, our traffic programย evolvesย as the travel guidance and restrictionsย continue to changeย impactingย the demand for our flightsโ€, says Ole Orvรฉr. โ€œWe try to provide our customers with the most reliable view of winter travel opportunities, but changes to flights are still possibleโ€.

Swiss reduces dismissals for operational reasons, will reduce its fleet by 15%

First A321neo, delivered September 18, 2020

Swiss International Air Lines has has made this announcement:

Swiss is currently faced with structural changes to its market, and expects to see a lasting 20-percent decline in customer demand in the medium term. Thanks to a constructive consultation procedure, however, the corresponding workforce reduction of 550 dismissals for operational reasons, including dismissals in the event of non-acceptance of changed employment terms, is smaller than was expected as recently as last month. In total, SWISS will have downsized its workforce by some 1,700 full-time equivalents by the end of 2021, with two thirds of this reduction achieved through voluntary measures and natural staff turnover. As projected, the SWISS aircraft fleet will also be reduced by 15 per cent. SWISS is living up to all its social responsibilities in all these actions, and is ensuring that these unavoidable dismissals for operational reasons pay maximum regard to all social considerations.

Against the background of the structural ramifications of the coronavirus crisis and what is expected to be a lasting 20-per-cent decline in customer demand in the medium term, Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) initiated the consultation procedure which was required by law in view of its planned restructuring (see here for details) on 6 May. At the time, up to 780 SWISS employees among the companyโ€™s ground and flying personnel potentially faced dismissal for operational reasons (or dismissal in the event of their non-acceptance of changed employment terms) as a result of the projected 15-per-cent reduction in the size of the SWISS aircraft fleet.

After the conclusion of the consultation period which had subsequently been extended to a full three weeks, SWISS was able to reduce the number of such unavoidable dismissals for operational reasons to 550 together with its social partners. By the end of 2021, SWISS will thus have downsized its workforce by around 1,700 full-time equivalents or over 20 per cent, with two thirds of this reduction achieved through voluntary measures and natural staff turnover. The size of the SWISS fleet will be reduced by 15 per cent as previously envisaged. The rescaling and transformation of the company under its โ€˜reachโ€™ strategic programme should result in savings of some CHF 500 million.

Fewer dismissals for operational reasons following consultation procedure

The consultation procedure conducted offered SWISSโ€™s social partners, its employees and their representatives the opportunity to submit suggestions on how potential dismissals could be avoided or reduced in number and/or how their impact could be mitigated. Over 770 such suggestions were received from the companyโ€™s employees. As a result, SWISS has been able to lower the total number of dismissals for operational reasons required from 780 to 550, a reduction of around one third. The 550 dismissals include 58 employees who will simultaneously be offered revised employment terms such as a reduction in their degree of employment or a change to their function, who will thus have the option of remaining with the company under the new terms.

SWISS is therefore compelled to issue ordinary notice to terminate employment to 492 employees in and outside Switzerland. Of these, 334 are cabin personnel, 101 are ground personnel and 57 serve in SWISS Technics. No reductions are being made to the companyโ€™s cockpit corps numbers; but in consultation with the Aeropers pilotsโ€™ staff association, the present cockpit staffing surplus will be managed in particular through a prescribed corps-wide work hours reduction, subject to agreement thereto by Aeropers members.

โ€œI am truly sorry for all our employees who are being served notice,โ€ says SWISS CEO Dieter Vranckx. โ€œAnd it is with the deepest of regret that we are having to take this radical action in response to the structural changes that our industry is experiencing. We are convinced, though, that this is the right course to take if we are to repay our bank loans, regain our ability to invest and retain our competitive credentials.โ€

SWISS will now aim to promptly conclude this phase of uncertainty and implement its rescaling and transformation with all possible speed. The dismissals required will be effected with full observance of all the stipulations made by the Swiss Confederation in connection with its guarantees for SWISSโ€™s bank loan facilities, with full application of the relevant โ€˜Sozialplanโ€™ severance benefits plans and with full regard to all further social considerations. All the employees concerned will also be offered the extensive services and support of a partner outplacement agency.

15 percent fleet reduction confirmed

The present SWISS fleet of more than 90 of its own aircraft and those operated on its behalf by Helvetic Airways under wet-lease arrangements will be reduced by 15 percent from its 2019 size as planned in response to the decline in demand. Which five Airbus long-haul aircraft (A330s or A340s) and which ten short-haul aircraft will be withdrawn to this end is yet to be decided. On the short- and medium-haul fleet front, the reduction in the number of Helvetic Airways aircraft operated on SWISSโ€™s behalf will be proportionately higher than the number of SWISSโ€™s own aircraft withdrawn. SWISS is also considering modifications to its route portfolio, reductions in frequencies and a delayed resumption of services to some long-haul destinations.

โ€œIn the future SWISS will be smaller. But it will also be more focused, more digital, more efficient and more sustainable,โ€ says Vranckx. โ€œThe transformation planned will be conducted over the next three years through our โ€˜reachโ€™ strategic program, with which we aim to realign our company to the changed market situation and achieve sustainable cost savings of some CHF 500 million.โ€

SWISSโ€™s current production is still substantially below that of pre-pandemic times. In high summer, capacity is likely to be at around 50 to 55 percent of its 2019 levels. For 2021 as a whole, SWISS expects its total production to be about 40 percent of that of 2019.

In June and July SWISS will newly fly or resume services to 49 destinations from Zurich and Geneva, and will operate a total of 125 routes in high summer.

The first Ryanair Boeing 737-8 MAX 8 (200) finally departs from Seattle

1st MAX, delivered on June 16, 2021

Ryanair has taken delivery of its first (delayed) Boeing 737-8 MAX 8 (200). The 197-seat high-density aircraft (the pictured EI-HEN, top) departed from Boeing Field this morning shortly after 1 am local time. It is expected to arrive later today in Dublin.

Ryanair on June 16 issued this statement:

Ryanair on June 16 took delivery of its first Boeing 737-8200 โ€œGamechangerโ€ aircraft in Seattle, Washington. The aircraft flew overnight from Seattle and will land in Dublin Airport later this afternoon. This is the first delivery of Ryanairโ€™s 210 firm order of these revolutionary โ€œGamechangerโ€ aircraft, which is an investment in new technology, valued at over $22 billion. These new aircraft will carry 4% more passengers but reduce fuel consumption by 16% per seat, lower noise emissions by 40% and lower CO2 emissions by a similar amount.

Ryanairโ€™s Michael Oโ€™Leary said: ย

โ€œWe are delighted to take delivery of our first new technology Gamechanger aircraft. These new Boeing 737 aircraft will help Ryanair lower costs, cut fuel consumption and lower noise and CO2 emissions as we invest heavily in new technology to deepen our environmental commitment as Europeโ€™s greenest, cleanest major airline. Each 737 aircraft offers 197 seats (compared to our 189-seat current 737 fleet). However, our customers will enjoy more leg room, new Boeing โ€œSky Interiorsโ€ and lower fares, while reducing their environmental footprint by switching to these new aircraft.

Due to regrettable delivery delays, we expect to take delivery of just 12 of these aircraft during Summer 2021, with 6 delivering in Ryanair colors and 6 in Malta Air colors.

Ryanair expects to take delivery of an additional 50 of these 737 โ€œGamechangerโ€ aircraft before Summer 2022, which will enable the Ryanair Group to rebound strongly, offering new routes, lower fares, and rapid traffic recovery to many partner airports across Europe as the tourism industry rebuilds from the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020/2021โ€.

Alaska Airlines unveils an Airbus A320 in a “Pride Plane” special livery on N854VA

Alaska Airlines announced on social media it had unveiled a “Fly with Pride” special livery on its Airbus A320-214 N854VA with this statement and photos:

Our Pride flies nonstop. Literally! We are longtime supporters of the LGBTQ+ community, and weโ€™re proud to share our newest special aircraft, which was inspired by leaders of Alaskaโ€™s LGBTQ+ employee group to encourage conversations around belonging, equity and equality.

The design features airplane decals with iconic rainbow stripes & inclusive colors such as brown, black, light blue, white & pink to represent BIPOC & Transgender communities. Without those groups of people & their activism, we would not have Pride today.

Previously on June 4, 2021 the company issued this statement on the ACLU Letter:

Alaska Airlines has been a longtime supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. We have been a leader in the industry when it comes to inclusivity in our uniform and grooming standards, which have been informed by our employees and developed in accordance with federal and state laws.

We are committed to making Alaska a place where everyone feels respected and belongs and proudlyย celebrate the diversity of our employeesย this Pride month and all year long.

Over the past year, we have introduced several new guidelines designed to give our flight attendants more inclusive uniform options. Sinceย early 2020, all flight attendants have been able to orderย anyย pantย orย parkaย styleย and have been able to select the uniform kit of their choice, regardless of gender identity. Startingย later this month, we are set to introduceย the ability to order these itemsย online, giving employeesย greater ease of choice in the uniform selection process. We will also implement new gender-neutral hair policies that will allow all flight attendants to wear their hair down when not handling food, regardless of gender. These are two of the latest policy changes we have made to make Alaska a more inclusive place to work.

We are committed to continuing to explore uniform and grooming standards for our flight attendants. We know we cannot do thisย alone, andย appreciate the feedback and partnership we have with our flight attendant community.

The statement was in response to this letter sent to Alaska by the ACLU:
