Alaska Airlines brings back ‘Get the Row with BOGO’

Alaska Airlines made this announcement:

Alaska Airline’s ‘Get the Row with BOGO’ is back! Beginning today through Sept. 16, guests traveling by Oct. 31 could get a whole row to themselves when they book a flight and get a second ticket on the same flight for just the taxes and fees.

Alaska Airlineโ€™s โ€˜Get the Row with BOGOโ€™ is back! Get the whole row for you and your guest with the middle seat blocked through Oct. 31, 2020

“Our hope is that with this offer, as well as our Next-Level Care and middle seat blocking through Oct. 31, our guests are given further peace of mind while traveling to our more than 115 destinations this fall,” said Sangita Woerner, Alaska Airlines’ senior vice president of marketing and guest experience. “We have added layers of safety to keep our guests and employees safe when they are ready to fly, and hope to see many of them in the skies in the coming months.”

When guests make the decision to fly again, they will be met with the same Alaska hospitality they have come to know and love, as well as new layers of safety to keep everyone healthy. As part of nearly 100 Next-Level Care safety measures, Alaska is:

  • Extending physical distancing on board for fall travel with blocked middle seats on all mainline flights and reduced capacity on regional flights through Oct. 31*.
  • Strengthening face mask policies, including:
    • Requiring all guests over the age of two to wear a mask or face covering, with no exceptions. If a traveler does not wear a mask, they will not be allowed to fly. This policy applies to anywhere Alaska conducts business โ€“ at ticket counters, gate areas and inflight.
    • In late June, Alaska empowered its flight attendants to issue a final notice to any guest โ€“ in the form of a yellow card handed to them โ€“ who repeatedly disregards or disobeys the requirement to wear a mask or face covering. If a guest still does not comply after that warning, their travel with Alaska will be suspended immediately instead of undergoing a review process.
  • Over the coming weeks, new touch-free options for Alaska guests and employees will include the ability:
    • To pre-order meals and purchase food and beverages on board using a stored credit card (pending return of food and beverage for purchase in main cabin).
    • To print bag tags without having to touch check-in kiosks.
    • For agents to scan boarding passes up to six feet away while boarding.
    • To receive a text message instead of a printed boarding pass if guests don’t already have the Alaska Airlines mobile app.
    • To get an emailed receipt for baggage instead of printed receipt.
  • Continuing enhanced cabin cleaning procedures that exceed CDC guidelines, including cleaning between flights, using electrostatic disinfectant sprayers for a next-level clean.
  • Extending flexible travel policies, with Peace of Mind waivers that allow for no change or cancellation fees for flights booked through Dec. 31, if travelers’ plans should change**.

Terms and conditions

For the BOGO sale, tickets must be purchased by 11:59 p.m. (PT) on Sept. 16, 2020, for travel between Sept. 15, 2020 and Oct. 31, 2020. To get the row, select seats when purchasing. Day of week and other restrictions apply. View complete terms and conditions at Alaskaair.com/GETYOURROW.

*ย Blocked middle seats are only available on Alaska Airlines flights 1-1999. Our regional aircraft do not have middle seats. An open middle seat is not guaranteed. Certain occasions, such as aircraft changes or re-accommodating guests from a previously canceled flight, may require guests to be seated next to someone not in their party.ย  If you’re uncomfortable with the distance between you and others on your date of travel, please speak with a customer service agent about your options.

**ย Change and cancellation fees are waived for all tickets purchased through December 31, 2020, and on January 1, 2021, we will be eliminating change fees permanently. Learn more about our flexible travel policy.

British Airways doubles up in Pakistan with direct flights to Lahore

British Airways has today announced it will begin flying from Heathrow to Lahore, Pakistan, four times a week from October 12, 2020.

The โ€˜City of Gardensโ€™, Lahore, is known for its rich culture and will be the second city in Pakistan that British Airways will operate to, following the relaunch of services to Islamabad.

Flights will be operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners departing from Heathrow Terminal 5, landing into Lahoreโ€™s International Airport.

In response to COVID-19, British Airways has introduced a range of measures to keep its customers safe. Prior to travel, they will receive information on changes at their airport and onboard experience and tips on how to prepare for their journey. Customers will also be asked to help manage the wellness of everyone travelling by:

  • Checking-in online, downloading their boarding pass and where possible self-scanning their boarding passes at the departure gate.
  • Observing social distancing and using hand sanitisers that are placed throughout airports.
  • Using new contactless, automated features at our lounges, including a new online food and drink service.
  • Wearing a facemask at all times and bringing enough to replace them every four hours for longer flights.
  • Ensuring they have everything they need from their hand luggage before departure, and where possible, storing their carry-on bag under the seat in front of them.
  • Not travelling if they think they have any symptoms of Covid-19.

On board, all cabin crew will wear PPE and a new food service has been introduced which reduces the number of interactions required with customers. Surfaces including seats, screens, seat buckles and tray tables will be cleaned after every flight and each aircraft is completely cleaned from nose to tail every day.

The air on all British Airways flights is fully recycled once every two to three minutes through HEPA filters, which remove microscopic bacteria and virus clusters with over 99.9% efficiency, equivalent to hospital operating theatre standards.

Wildfire smoke prompts Alaska to temporarily suspend flights in Portland and Spokane

Alaska Airlines ย made this announcement:

Alaska Airlines began the temporary suspension of all flights to and from airports in Portland and Spokane starting at 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 14, as the Pacific Northwest continues to battle intense wildfires and hazardous air quality. The flight suspensions are expected to last until 3 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15.

Across the West, fires are creating thick smoke and haze, causing very poor air quality conditions in the Portland and Spokane areas. We made the difficult decision to stop our operation so that our employees and guests can remain safe.

Alaska Airlines, along with its regional carrier Horizon Air, has canceled dozens of flights in Portland and Spokane for that 24-hour period.

Alaska and Horizon have also canceled flights at smaller airports due to fire and smoke including Eugene, Medford and Redmond/Bend in Oregon, and Pasco and Walla Walla in Washington.

Improving weather conditions in the coming days could begin to dissipate smoke in Portland and Spokane. However, other airports in the West could be impacted by drifting smoke.

From NASA:

Winds of Change Move Western Smoke Into the Pacific

Clouds of smoke cascade off the west coast of the United States

NOAA/NASA’s Suomi NPP satellite captured these series of images (made into an animated GIF) showing the winds changing direction on Sep. 06, 2020 when choking clouds of brown smoke began to billow and cascade into the Pacific Ocean. (Dates displayed in lower left hand corner.)ย By Sep. 10, the smoke cloud had traveled over 1,300 miles. The square miles of smoke in theย image below totals 963,269. That estimate has been computed using the measurement tool within the NASA Worldview application.

A stunning 3.1 millionย acres have burnedย thisย year in California alone (per CAL fire), which is up from a total of 2.5 millionย acresย as of Wednesday, Sep. 09, 2020. In addition,ย 805,314ย acres have been lost in Oregon (State of Oregon Fires and Hotspots Dashboard,ย as of 9:30am EDT Sep. 11) andย 500,000ย acres (Northwest Interagency Coordination Center) in Washington state. Winds blowing throughย the westย have been stoking fires and helping spread them quickly as evidenced in the growth of over a half million acres in less than two days. Thereย haveย been 12ย wildfire-related fatalities thisย year. Records have been shattered during this fire season and experts continue to blame drought, excessive heat and strong winds for this tragedy. Because the climate continues to change, scientists also believe that these types of fire events will not only continue but will worsen. Predictive meterologist for the National Interagency Fire Center, Nick Nausler, tweeted: “Multiple fires made 20-plus mile runs in 24 hours over the last few days in California, Oregon and Washington. Such distances traveled so quickly may not be all that rare in grassland fires. However, most of these fires are making massive runs in timber and burning tens of thousands of acres and in some cases 100,000-plus acres in one day. The sheer amount of fire on the landscape is surreal.”

Air France attempts to instill confidence in flying

Air France has made this announcement:

In the context of the current health crisis and given the very gradual lifting of travel restrictions worldwide, Air France is introducing exceptional measures to assist and reassure its customers.

A fully flexible sales policy

Air France is adapting its commercial measures to enable its customers to book their next trip in complete confidence.

If customers wish to cancel their trip, their ticket can now be changed at no extra cost and without proof, on the date and to the destination* of their choice. If they prefer, they can request a refundable credit voucher. These measures, which provide optimal flexibility, apply to all trips until March 31, 2021.

If their flight is cancelled by the airline, customers can choose to postpone their trip to the date and destination* of their choice, request a full ticket refund or receive a credit voucher, which is also refundable if not used.

Finally, for all trips until the end of the year, customers who are members of the Flying Blue loyalty program will have their Miles and experience points (XP) doubled.

Since the start of this unprecedented crisis, Air France has significantly strengthened its sales teams dedicated to supporting its customers. Close to 700 agents are currently in charge of handling refund and credit voucher requests. Since January 2020, 2 million requests have been processed and 1.1 billion euros refunded.

*if the change of destination results in a change in price, only the fare difference will be applied.

A new travel insurance cover for epidemic-related risks

In partnership with Allianz Travel, Air France is extending its travel insurance cover to provide its customers with better protection. The company now also provides them with cover** should they fall ill or be required to quarantine due to an epidemic or pandemic disease such as Covid-19.

This insurance thus allows them to deal with unforeseen expenses with cover in specific events, notably during their trip with medical assistance and refund of medical expenses abroad or additional costs incurred from quarantine (accommodation expenses, for example).

This insurance cover, available to customers at the time of purchasing their ticket on the airfrance.com website and in company customer relations centres, is in addition to the existing Cancellation + missed flight, Multi-risk and Assistance products.

**cover available for customers residing in France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and the UK, and shortly in other countries.

Air France Protect, Air Franceโ€™s health commitment

The health and well-being of Air France customers and staff are at the heart of the companyโ€™s concerns. Air France is committed to providing its customers optimum health and hygiene conditions at each stage of their trip. Grouped under the โ€œAir France Protectโ€ label, the measures implemented by the company are regularly adapted to changes in the current health context.

In line with the current regulations, it is compulsory to wear a surgical mask upon arrival at the airport, where a number of measures have been implemented to guarantee a customer travel experience in optimum conditions of health and safety โ€“ application of physical distancing measures, counters equipped with Plexiglass protection screens, regularly disinfected self-service kiosks, hand sanitizer available throughout the airport and the reorganization of customer channels at check-in and boarding to limit contact.

The wearing of surgical masks is also compulsory on board the aircraft and throughout the duration of the trip. The air in the cabin is renewed every 3 minutes. The air recycling system on board Air France aircraft is equipped with HEPA โ€“ High Efficiency Particulate Air โ€“ filters identical to those used in hospital operating theatres. In addition, to limit interaction, the in-flight service has been simplified โ€“ the meal and beverage service has been completely adapted and duty-free sales have been temporarily suspended. The newspapers and magazines offer is now fully-digital, accessible in the Air France Play app.

Air France has also reinforced aircraft cleaning procedures, notably with the disinfection of all surfaces in contact with customers such as armrests, tables and screens before each flight. A specific procedure for disinfecting aircraft by spraying an approved virucidal product has also been introduced.

Reopening the skies, flight after flight

Air France is currently operating flights to close to 170 destinations, including over 70 cities in Europe, several international routes worldwide and its entire network in France, including the French Overseas Departments and Corsica. Prior to their trip, Air France invites its customers to check the entry conditions and travel documents required on arrival. To find out more, consult the airfrance.traveldoc.aero website.

Teruel Airport has found an expandable niche for airliner storage in Spain

All photos by Javier Rodriguez, reporting from Spain.

Teruel Airport in Spain has become the biggest aircraft storage airport in Europe.

The airport wasย built specifically for airliner storage and maintenance.

From Wikipedia:

“Teruel Airport (IATA: TEV, ICAO: LETL) is an airport near Teruel, Teruel (Province), Spain. Plataforma Aeroportuaria-Teruel (PLATA) was certified for public use by the Spanish Aviation Safety and Security Agency (AESA), on February 5, 2013. Permission for air operations was granted by the Spanish Aviation Authority and the Government of Aragon on February 28, 2013. It serves as an aircraft maintenance and aircraft storage for the Tarmac Aerosaveย company.

PLATA is owned by a consortium formed by the Government of Aragon and Teruel City Council, and it does not belong to AENA Group.

The dry climate makes it suitable for long-term storage of aircraft. During the COVID-19 pandemic around 100 grounded planes have been parked there.”

From the airport:

PLATA is built on the old Caudรฉ Aerodrome, which was used during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). It was later used as an artillery range by the Spanish Air Force. It covered an area of 2,043,600 m2, now are 3.400.000 m2. This site was used historically for military aeronautical activities because of its exceptional climate conditions, location and low density of air traffic.

While the schedule is significantly reduced compared to 2019, several major routes have returned including nonstop service between Calgary and Palm Springs, Phoenix, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas along with the return of nonstop service between Toronto and Kingston and Montego Bay, Jamaica and Cancun. The airlineย is also reintroducing non-stop Dreamliner service from Toronto to London (Gatwick).

Theย updatedย schedule is supported by theย layeredโ€ฏframework WestJet has built to ensure Canadians can continue to travel safely and responsibly, through the airline’sย Safety Above Allย hygiene program. The airlineย continues to provide flexibility in booking, change and cancellation policies for guests.

To provide piece of mind for those booking international travel (excluding the U.S.) WestJet also recently announced the availability of no-chargeย COVID-19 travel insurance coverageย forย eligibleย guestsย for reservations made on or after September 18, 2020,ย for WestJet air-only andย WestJetย Vacations bookings.

Boeing and Etihad Airways concluded testing on the ecoDemonstrator program

Boeing and Etihad Airways concluded testing on the aerospace companyโ€™s 2020 ecoDemonstrator program last week with a cross-country flight using a 50/50 blend of sustainable and traditional jet fuel.

Flying from Seattle to Boeingโ€™s manufacturing site in South Carolina, Etihadโ€™s newest 787-10 Dreamliner used the maximum sustainable fuel blend permitted for commercial aviation. The transcontinental flight also demonstrated a new way for pilots, air traffic controllers and airline operations centers to communicate simultaneously and optimize routing.

Boeingโ€™s ecoDemonstrator program takes promising technologies out of the lab and tests them in the air to accelerate innovation. This yearโ€™s program evaluated four projects to reduce emissions and noise and enhance the safety and health of passengers and crew. All of the 787-10 test flights used a blend of traditional jet fuel and sustainable fuel produced from inedible agricultural wastes to minimize emissions, with the final flight operating at the maximum 50/50 commercial blend.

The fuel from World Energy and supplied to Boeing by EPIC Fuels has been certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials to reduce carbon emissions by more than 75% over the fuelโ€™s life cycle.

The partnership between Boeing and Etihad Airways represents a longstanding collaboration to make flying more sustainable. The two companies were among the founding partners that created the Sustainable Bioenergy Research Consortium in 2010. Based at Khalifa University near Abu Dhabi, the pilot project for a unique desert ecosystem produces sustainable fuel from plants that grow in the desert, irrigated by coastal seawater. Etihad used the initial batch of fuel from the pilot project in January 2019 on a passenger flight from Abu Dhabi to Amsterdam.

In January 2020, Etihad took delivery of its signature green 787-10 using a fuel mix comprising 30% SAF produced by World Energy.

Boeing has been a leader in industry efforts to develop sustainable aviation fuel since before the first test flight on a commercial airliner in 2008. Along with others in the industry, the company worked to gain certification of sustainable fuel for commercial use in 2011 and collaborates around the world to create regional production roadmaps.

For more than a decade, World Energy and EPIC Fuels have produced and supplied SAF to Boeing for flight testing. Boeing offers airlines the option of using sustainable fuel for their airplane delivery flights. The first of these occurred in 2012 with an Etihad 777-300ER delivery flight from Everett, Washington, to Abu Dhabi.
