British Airways launches its own English Sparkling Wine

British Airways has made this announcement:

British Airways is celebrating its centenary year in style with the launch of its own English Sparkling Wine.ย  Customers will be able to enjoy the bubbles from the award-winning Hattingley Valley from July 1 and raise a toast to the airlineโ€™s milestone birthday.

British Airwaysโ€™ team of wine experts worked with Hattingley Valleyโ€™s talented crew of wine makers to create a 2015 Blanc de Noir that will be exclusively available to customers from this summer.

The wine is a Pinot Noir dominant blend that will work perfectly at altitude.ย  The grapes were hand-harvested and gently pressed, before being bottled at Hattingley Valleyโ€™s winery in Hampshire.

The premium sparkling wine will be available exclusively in British Airwaysโ€™ First cabin as well as the airlineโ€™s flagship lounge, The Concorde Room in Heathrow Terminal 5, from July 1. Get a very first taste of the new sparkling at the wineryโ€™s Mad Hattingley Tea Party pop-up at TASTE of London in Regents Park from June 19 to June 23.

Founded in 2008, family-owned Hattingley Valley specialises in making premium English Sparkling Wine with distinctively rich flavours. A hallmark of their style is fermenting a small proportion of each yearโ€™s wine in oak barrels, creating award-winning wines including the Classic Reserve, Rose and Blanc de Blancs.

British Airways has released a series of centenary editions in partnership with British brands during its centenary. The airline has partnered with Scottish craft brewers, BrewDog, who created a transatlantic IPA for customers and Fife-based distillers, InchDairnie have created a limited-edition whisky. British Airways has also teamed up with Marmite, who have created a centenary branded jar. As Marmite is the most confiscated brand at airport security, the travel-sized jar is conveniently sized to fit within the liquid allowance.

SAS to eliminate tax-free sales onboard to reduce weight

Scandinavian Airlines-SAS has made this announcement:

Every step on the way to sustainable travel is important. From this autumn, tax-free sales will therefore cease on SAS flights. This will reduce the overall weight of our aircraft, which in turn will save fuel and cut emissions.

SASโ€™s efforts to improve the sustainability of its operations are split into two areas and involve a series of initiatives in each area: improved fuel efficiency, alternative fuels and innovation, sustainable products and services. As part of these efforts, a number of changes will be introduced onboard SAS flights over the coming months in order to reduce the weight of our aircraft.

Tax-free sales have long been a popular service onboard our flights amongst passengers who have used it, but our passengersโ€™ buying behaviour has changed and sustainability has become more important than ever before โ€“ for both our passengers and SAS. Withdrawing tax-free sales will reduce the overall weight of the aircraft, which in turn will reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Instead, SAS will develop solutions to offer passengers more modern ways of buying and receiving goods in connection with their journey.

โ€œSAS is aiming to cut emissions by at least 25 percent by 2030. Every step on the way to sustainable travel is important. Every initiative to reduce weight and thereby cut fuel consumption helps,โ€ says Karl Sandlund of EVP Commercial.

American Airlines and QANTAS welcome U.S. Department of Transportationโ€™s tentative approval of joint business

American Airlines and QANTAS Airways welcome the U.S. Department of Transportationโ€™s tentative approval of the carriersโ€™ joint business to better serve customers flying between the United States and Australia and New Zealand.

Final approval of the joint business will allow for commercial integration between the carriers, delivering new routes and significant customer benefits not possible through any other form of cooperation, including:

  • The opportunity to launch new routes and flights to new destinations, including city pairs not currently served by either carrier.
  • An expanded codeshare relationship and optimized schedules on trans-Pacific services, opening up more connections to more destinations and reduced total travel time.
  • Better access to seats on each carrierโ€™s network, leading to lower fares.
  • Additional frequent flyer benefits by further integrating the carriersโ€™ programs, including higher earn rates for points on each otherโ€™s networks beyond what is possible today through oneworld, as well as increased redemption opportunities and improved reciprocal end-to-end recognition of our top-tier frequent flyers.
  • Co-location at airports and investments in lounges, baggage systems and other infrastructure designed to better serve the carriersโ€™ joint customers.

As part of the case put to the DOT, Qantas and American flagged an intention to launch several new routes within the first two years of the proposed joint business. Qantas expects to announce details of two new routes โ€” Brisbane, Australia (BNE)โ€“Chicago (ORD) and BNEโ€“San Francisco (SFO) โ€” once final approval is received.

American and QANTAS Airways will review the Order, with a final decision from the DOT expected in the next few weeks.

KLM looks to future world travel

A pioneer in sustainability, KLM is partnering with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) to continue making aviation more sustainable starting with their innovative flight concept known as the โ€œFlying-V.โ€ This concept embraces a different approach to aircraft design, integrating the passenger cabin, cargo hold and fuel tanks in the wings to make a V-shaped aircraft. This improved aerodynamic shape will reduce the aircraftโ€™s weight and use 20% less fuel but still fit the existing airport infrastructure that currently house the A350.

In tandem with the celebration of KLMโ€™s 100th Anniversary, with KLM being the only airline in the world celebrating its 100th anniversary, a flying scale model and full-size section of the interior of the โ€œFlying-Vโ€ will be officially presented at the KLM Experience Days at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in October as a potential aircraft design of the future. KLM just announced last week that they have invested in a biofuel plant set to open in 2022 and committed to a 10-year contract for 75,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel per year. KLM is the first airline in the world to invest in sustainable aviation fuel at a large scale and continues to be a leader in airline sustainability through this relationship with TU Delft.

The aircraftโ€™s v-shaped design will integrate the passenger cabin, the cargo hold and the fuel tanks in the wings. Its improved aerodynamic shape and reduced weight will mean it uses 20% less fuel than the Airbus A350, todayโ€™s most advanced aircraft. A flying scale model and a full-size section of the interior of the Flying-V will be officially presented at the KLM Experience Days at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in October on the occasion of KLMโ€™s 100thanniversary.

The aircraft was originally conceptualised as a potential aircraft design for the future, but can be compared to todayโ€™s most advanced aircraft, the Airbus A350. Although the plane is not as long as the A350, it does have the same wingspan. This will enable the Flying-V to use existing infrastructure at airports, such as gates and runways, without difficulty and the aircraft will also fit into the same hangar as the A350. Whatโ€™s more, the Flying-V will carry the same number of passengers โ€“ 314 in the standard configuration โ€“ and the same volume of cargo, 160m3. The Flying-V will be smaller than the A350, giving it less aerodynamic resistance.

KLM President & CEO Pieter Elbers: โ€œIn recent years, KLM has developed as a pioneer in sustainability within the airline industry. The development of aviation has given the world a great deal, offering us an opportunity to connect people. This privilege is paired with a huge responsibility for our planet. KLM takes this very seriously and has therefore been investing in sustainability at different levels for many years, enabling it to develop a broad spectrum of sustainability initiatives. We are proud of our progressive cooperative relationship with TU Delft, which ties in well with KLMโ€™s strategy and serves as an important milestone for us on the road to scaling-up sustainable aviation.โ€

Dean of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at TU Delft Professor Henri Werij: โ€œWe are incredibly pleased to be able to cooperate with our trusted partner KLM on our combined mission to make aviation more sustainable. Radically new and highly energy-efficient aircraft designs such as the Flying-V are important in this respect, as are new forms of propulsion. Our ultimate aim is one of emission free flight. Our cooperation with KLM offers a tremendous opportunity to bring about real change.โ€

Fuel versus electric propulsion

The Flying-V is propelled by the most fuel-efficient turbofan engines that currently exist. In its present design it still flies on kerosene, but it can easily be adapted to make use of innovations in the propulsion system โ€“ by using electrically-boosted turbofans for example.
