Gol accelerates its fleet renewal to the Boeing 737 MAX 8

Gol Linhas Aรฉreas Inteligentes S.A. hasย announced a further acceleration of its fleet renewal and modernization plan and the execution of sale and leaseback agreements, with Castlelake and Apollo Aviation, for 13 Boeing 737 Next Generation (NG) aircraft in the Gol fleet that will be replaced with Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft over the next few years.

Due to favorable market conditions for transactions with its Boeing 737 NGs, Gol has accelerated its fleet renewal and modernization plan with sale and leaseback transactions of 13 Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft that will be removed from the fleet during 2019-2021.

The accelerated fleet renewal will not alter Gol’s planned capacity, as these aircraft will be returned simultaneously with the receipt of new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft under its order with Boeing and recent direct operating leases of 11 737 MAX8 aircraft.ย  The accelerated return of NGs will allow Gol to finish 2019 and 2018 with 24 and 34 737 MAX 8s in its operating fleet, respectively.

The 737 MAX will be the backbone of Gol’s fleet, increasing average seat per aircraft and bringing incremental cost per seat to very low levels.ย

By 2023, over 40% of the fleet with be comprised of 737 MAXs and over the next five years the transition to the MAX is expected to increase productivity by over 20% and reduce fuel consumption.

Compared to Gol’s 737-800 NG aircraft, the 737 MAX 8 has decreased fuel consumption on GOL’s routes by approximately 15%. ย ย

Hi Fly today operates a totally “plastic free” flight

Hi Fly issued this statement about today’s flights:

In a global first for the airline industry, and a defining moment for the sustainability of the planet, wet-lease carrier Hi Fly is making the first-ever jet-age passenger flight without a single-use plastic item on board.

The โ€˜plastics-freeโ€™ trial, involving four flights by Hi Flyโ€™s wide-body Airbus A340, 9H-SUN, will jet into the history books for the first time on December 26, 2018 from Lisbon on its way to Natal in Brazil.

The aircraft will return to Lisbon, this time with Brazilian passengers looking to welcome in the New Year Portuguese style. The revellers will then make the return journey home a week later. Over 700 passengers will take part in the trial.

Commenting ahead of the take-off, Hi Fly President Paulo Mirpuri said: โ€œThis historic Hi Fly flight, without any single-use plastic items on board, underlines our commitment to making Hi Fly the worldโ€™s first โ€˜plastics-freeโ€™ airline within 12 months.ย โ€œWe take that commitment very seriously.”

Also speaking prior to the flight, he added: โ€œWe are obviously excited and delighted that Hi Fly will be the first airline to attempt such a feat.

“Our corporate mission is based around sustainability and we work hand in glove with the Mirpuri Foundation to make sure that our corporate practices match our wider responsibilities to the planet.

โ€œThe test flights will prevent around 350 KG of single-use, virtually indestructible plastics from poisoning our environment.

โ€œOver 100,000 flights take off each day around the world and, last year, commercial aircraft carried nearly four billion passengers. This number is expected to double again in less than 20 years. So, the potential to make a difference here is clearly enormous.

The test flights will help us trial the many substitute items we have developed and introduced them, in a real-world environment.

โ€œWe know we may encounter some initial teething problems, but we are confident of addressing these over the coming months.

โ€œWe know, too, from the feedback we have received from client airlines and passengers, that itโ€™s the right thing for the airline to be doing.”

Pedro Ramos, the Director-General of Tour operator Alto Astral, the company who chartered the flights between Lisbon and Brazil, spoke of his companyโ€™s delight at being a participant in this key industry event.

โ€œEveryone at Alto Astral is excited to be involved in this adventure and we believe that future generations will thank those of us who have been prepared to stand up to try to make a difference now.

โ€œHi Fly has long been the leader in the field of corporate environmental responsibility and sustainability, and they have rightly identified, as a key objective, the early elimination of plastics pollution. Itโ€™s been great for us to see how, in practical terms, they have gone about replacing so much in order to kick-start this elimination process.

The plastics-free test flight is just the latest move by Hi Fly to make its entire fleet โ€˜plastics freeโ€™ by the end of 2019.

ย Among the scores of single-use plastic items that have been replaced are: cups, spoons, salt and pepper shakers, sick bags, packaging for bedding, dishes, individual butter pots, soft drink bottles and toothbrushes.

ย And among the many innovations presented to passengers on the flight, by the Hi Fly environmental experts, will be bamboo cutlery, an array of paper packaging, and containers that, once used, can be readily composted.

British Airways experiments with virtual reality technology at check-in desks

British Airwaysโ€™ customers are getting a taste of what itโ€™s like to fly at the front of the aircraft as the airline trials cutting edge virtual reality technology at check-in desks at its home at Heathrow Terminal 5.

After taking the 360ยฐ tour of the Club World cabin, customers who like the look of the additional space, the lie-flat seat, The White Company beddingย and restaurant-style dining can choose to upgrade their seat to enjoy the experience for real.

Tom Stevens, British Airways Head of Customer at Heathrow, said: โ€œWe are always looking at new and innovative ways to engage with our customers and virtual reality is the latest way we are using a rapidly evolving area of technology to further improve the airport experience.

โ€œIโ€™m thrilled British Airways is the first UK airline to be using the technology. The feedback from customers who have tried out the virtual reality headset has been incredibly positive; they love having a sneak peek at our swish Club World cabin, with many justifying an upgrade as an early Christmas present.

โ€œWeโ€™re really excited about the many opportunities virtual technology offers for our customers on the ground, and in the air.โ€

The virtual reality headsets are from tech start-up Skylights, which is part of British Airwaysโ€™ parent company IAGโ€™s Hangar 51 start-up accelerator programme.
