
Aerolineas Argentinas (Buenos Aires) may yet fly to the Falkland Islands (known as the Islas Malvinas in Argentina). President of Argentina, Cristina Fernandez, has proposed approaching the United Kingdom about agreeing to a new bilateral agreement that would permit a weekly flight by Aerolineas Argentinas from Buenos Aires to Stanley. However this proposal would probably meet political opposition in Argentina.

Of course many people in Argentina still remember the undeclared Falklands War between Britain and Argentina.ย The Falklands War began on Friday April 2, 1982, when Argentine forces invaded andย occupied the Falkland Islandsย and South Georgia. The British government dispatched a navalย task forceย to engage theย Argentine Navyย andย Air Force, and retake the islands byย amphibious assault. The resulting conflict lasted 74 days and ended with the Argentine surrender on June 14, 1982, which returned the islands to British control. 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel and three Falkland Islanders died during the conflict.
The Falkland Islands are anย archipelagoย in the Southย Atlantic Ocean, located over 250ย nautical milesย (460ย km; 290ย miles) east of Argentina. The archipelago comprisesย East Falkland,ย West Falkland, and 776 lesser islands.Stanley, the capital and only city, is on East Falkland. The islands are aย self-governingย British Overseas Territory, with theย United Kingdomย responsible for its defense and foreign affairs.
Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS) (Stanley) is the local UKย airlineย thatย operates scheduled passenger services throughout the Falkland Islands with Britten-Norman Islanders.
