Gol to start nonstop Fortaleza-Buenos Aires flights on May 10

Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes S.A. (Gol Transportes Aereos) (Sao Paulo) in association with the Ceará state government, has announced the launch of nonstop flights between Pinto Martins Airport, in Fortaleza, and Ezeiza International Airport, in Buenos Aires, beginning on May 10. Gol has 77 flights per week between Argentina and Brazil, more than any other airline.

The connection was brought about by the Ceará State Tourism Department through the Draft Bill 155/2013 for the ICMS tax (state VAT) on jet fuel, after the approval by the state legislature. It reduced ICMS tax (state VAT) on jet fuel from 30% to 12%, applicable for all domestic flights for Companies that has also regular direct international flights departing from this airport. Thus, the state of Ceará stands out even more as a tourist destination for the region.

LATAM Airlines Group’s 2013 operating profit increases by 605% to $643.9 million

LATAM Airlines Group (LAN Airlines and TAM Airlines) (Santiago) reported operating income of $234.9 million (US) for fourth quarter 2013, a 166% increase compared to the $88.3 million (US) operating income in fourth quarter 2012. Operating margin reached 6.9%, an increase of 4.4 points compared to 2.5% in 2012. This strong expansion in margins was driven by significant improvement in the financial results of the domestic Brazil operations and the rationalization of international passenger operations, as well as the continued progress of the integration process, synergy and efficiency initiatives.
During the fourth quarter of the year, and in line with the capacity cuts we had anticipated, we strongly decreased our total capacity as measured in ASKs by 4.5% as compared to the same period in 2012. This capacity rationalization was mainly a result of a strong decrease in capacity in our international network, which decreased by 6.5% as compared to the same period in 2012; and the continued rationalization of our domestic Brazil operations.
For full year 2013, LATAM reported operating income of $643.9 million (US), a 605% increase compared to the $91.4 million (US) in full year 2012 (pro forma). Operating margin reached 4.9% an increase of 4.2 points compared to 0.7% in 2012, in line with the guidance provided by the Company.

LAN Argentina is evicted from its hangar in Buenos Aires, can it survive?

LAN Argentina (Buenos Aires) has been served notice to terminate its maintenance hangar lease at the downtown Aeroparque Jorge Newbery Airport in Buenos Aires. The Argentine airline of the LATAM Group is being evicted from the Aeroparque hangar although it has been faithfully paying its rent and has a contract through 2023. The carrier needs the hangar to maintain operations in Argentina. LAN Argentina has stated it will take the forced eviction to court in Argentina.

The airline competes against state-run Aerolineas Argentinas (Buenos Aires). According to this report by the BBC, the current government of Argentina, headed by Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, has been accused of protecting state-run companies in the past.

Meanwhile the government of Argentina has accused LAN Airlines and LAN Argentina of stirring up worker sentiment against Argentina.
