Ryanair orders five additional Boeing 737-800s

Ryanair (Dublin) andย Boeing (Chicago and Seattle) have finalized an order for five additional Next-Generation 737s, valued at $452 million at list prices. Today’s announcement brings the total number of unfilled Next-Generation 737 orders for the Ireland-based ultra-low-cost carrier to 180 airplanes.

The airline announced last year an order for 175 of the airplanes. Ryanair is the world’s largest 737-800 customer, with orders placed for 528 of the type to date.

Ryanair operates more than 1,600 flights daily from 68 bases connecting 186 destinations in 30 countries. Currently operating more than 300 737-800s, Ryanair took delivery of its first in 1999, and now operates the largest fleet of Boeing airplanes in Europe. With a team of more than 9,000 highly skilled professionals the airline is expected to fly more than 81.5 million passengers this year alone.

Today’s announcement brings the total number of 737s ordered to date to more than 11,000. Boeing currently has more than 3,700 unfilled orders for 737s.

Aer Lingus launches its inaugural flight to Toronto and its first Boeing 757 from Dublin

Aer Lingus (Dublin) yesterday (April 14) recorded two firsts; the launch of its inaugural flight from Dublin to Toronto (Pearson) and the first operation from Dublin of the Boeing 757-200 aircraft recently added to its trans-Atlantic fleet.

The new service will operate year-round with a daily service between Dublin and Toronto during the summer season and up to four weekly services operating during the winter. This is the fourth trans-Atlantic route launch in recent months and forms part of Aer Lingusโ€™ significant trans-Atlantic growth plan in 2014.

The 2014 growth plan includes;

ยท New routes from Dublin to Toronto and San Francisco
ยท The addition of three Boeing 757-200 aircraft to the long haul fleet
ยท Almost doubling of frequency on services from Shannon to Boston and New York
ยท The creation of more than 200 new jobs

Aer Lingus customers travelling from over twenty UK and European cities via Dublin to Toronto will also have the option to connect to eight key cities within Canada including Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary.

To support the operation of the new routes from Dublin to Toronto and from Shannon to New York and Boston, Aer Lingus has wet leased three Boeing 757-200 aircraft from ASL Aviation Group. The aircraft are configured with an economy and business class cabin. Business travellers will continue to enjoy the same great level of service; with gourmet meals, sleeper seats and an extensive in-flight entertainment selection.

The ASL Aviation Group, based in Ireland, is a well-established global aviation group providing an unrivalled array of aviation services. The group of aviation companies includes Irish airline Air Contractors and French based airline Europe Airpost as well as two support service companies โ€“ ACLAS Global and Air Contractors Engineering; and various leasing entities. The Groupโ€™s operations are worldwide with the airlines operating a mixed fleet of wide body, short haul and turboprop passenger and cargo aircraft under their own brands and for a number of leading airlines. ASL Aviation Group has a staff of 1,200, a fleet of ยฑ80 aircraft. ASL is a joint venture between CMB (51%) and 3P Air Freighters (49%).

Norwegian opens its new base at Barcelona, Spain

Norwegian Air Shuttle (Norwegian.com) (Oslo) and Spanish authorities are celebrating today the opening of the new base in Barcelona. It is the sixth Spanish base along with Madrid, Alicante, Malaga, Las Palmas and Tenerife.

The mood among the travelers were on top when Norwegian, Spanish authorities and partners celebrated the opening of the new base in Barcelona with a ribbon cutting, refreshments and speeches.

Between March and October this year Norwegian expects to fly around 700,000 passengers to and from Barcelona. During the same period last year traveled 490,000 passengers to and from the Catalan capital.

Three Boeing 737-800 are now based at the Barcelona-El Prat Airport. Over 120 pilots and cabin crew have been hired locally with competitive wages and working conditions. Norwegian opens four new routes and increase frequencies on existing routes from April 2014. Norwegian now has 11 nonstopย routes from BCN and 69 flights a week from Barcelona.

Ryanair adds seven new routes from Dublin

Ryanair (Dublin) has released its Dublin winter 2014 schedule, with 7 new routes (59 in total) and increased flights on 21 existing routes (growing from 900 to over 1,000 weekly flights). ย According to the airline, ย “This growth is a direct result of the Governmentโ€™s welcome decision to scrap the travel tax from April 1 and will deliver over 800,000 more passengers at Dublin Airport this year.”

Air Annobรณn to take delivery of its first BAe RJ85

Air Annobรณnย (San Antonio de Pale, Annobรณnย Island, Equatorial Guinea) is getting ready to take delivery of its first BAe (Avro) RJ85. The pictured RJ85 EI-RJS (msn E2365) was painted in Shannon and has repositioned back to Dublin pending delivery as 3C-MAA. The jetliner is named “Mebana”

Annobรณnย Island (named after “ano bom”,ย Portugueseย for “good year”), also known asย Pagaluย orย Pigalu, is an island of the coast ofย Equatorial Guinea and is part of theย Cameroon Lineย archipelago according to Wikipedia.

The remote airline was established in 2012 and currently wet leases two 99-seat BAe 146-300s (ZS-SBR and ZS-SOR) from Fair Aviation (Lanseria) in order to operate the daily Malabo-Bata route according to The African Aviation Tribune. According to this report the airline started operations on this route on January 25, 2013. The new addition is expected to replace this wet lease agreement.

Aer Lingus’ 2013 operating profit drops by 12% to $83.8 million

Aer Lingus Group (Aer Lingus) (Dublin) today announced its unaudited preliminary results for the year ended December 31, 2013. The group reported a 12 percent drop in its operating profit for 2013, before net exceptional items, of โ‚ฌ61.1 million ($83.8 million).

Ryanair to fly to Russia starting on April 1

Ryanair (Dublin) will launch its first route to Russia starting on April 1. The Dublin-St. Petersburg (Pulkovo) will be operated three days a week per ShanghaiDaily.com. The ultra fare airline had planned to launched flights to both St. Petersburg and Moscow in March but it is being delayed to April 1.

VivaAerobus gets ready to take delivery of its first Airbus A320

VivaAerobus (vivaaerobus.com) (Monterrey) will soon become a new Airbus A320 operator, gradually replacing its Boeing 737-300s with newer Airbus A320s. The first, formerย Livingston A320-232 EI-ERH (msn 2157), has arrived back in Dublin following its repainting in Montpellier, France.

Ryanair to open its 65th base, this time in Lisbon, Portugal

Ryanair (Dublin) has announced it will open its thirdย Portuguese base (65 in total) at Lisbon in April 2014 with one based aircraft and four new routes (nine in total). The new routes will be Dole, Manchester, Marseille and Pisa. The company will operate 124 weekly flights with the new additions.
In other news, the ultra low-fare airline announced its flights are now available for booking through Google Flight Search.

Etihad Airways to add a second daily flight to New York, Etihad Regional is unveiled and expands operations

Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi) will double its flights between Abu Dhabi and New York City, introducing a second daily service from Saturday, March 1, 2014.

Flight EY 103 will depart Abu Dhabi International Airport at 1.45 am, arriving at New Yorkโ€™s John F Kennedy Airport at 7.45 am the same day, while the return flight, EY102, will leave New York at 11.35 am, arriving in Abu Dhabi at 9.20 am the next day.

The new flights will complement the airlineโ€™s current 10.30 am departure to New York, providing a choice of services for Abu Dhabiโ€™s business, Government, expatriate and leisure travellers, while passengers travelling from New York to Abu Dhabi and beyond will now have the option of a late morning flight as well as the current 9.40 pm departure.

Initially, the new flights will be operated by Etihad Airways using two tri-class Boeing 777-300ER aircraft leased from its strategic partner, Indiaโ€™s Jet Airways. From May 1, 2014, Jet Airways will operate these flights.

The second New York service will increase substantially the connections available via the Abu Dhabi Airport hub, with the schedule designed to link in both directions with Etihad Airways and partner airline flights between Abu Dhabi and more than 30 destinations in India, the Middle East, Central and South East Asia, Africa and island nations in the Indian Ocean region.

In other news, Etihad Regional, operated by Darwin Airline (Lugano and Geneva), unveiled yesterday (January 16) its first painted 50-seat SAAB 2000. All aircraft are expected to be repainted by the end of June. Etihad Airways is acquiring a 33 percent stake in the regional carrier.

Etihad Regional will expand to 34 destinations. Stuttgart will be added next month, followed by Berlin, Dusseldorf, London (City), Poznan, Tirana, Toulouse, Wroclaw, Zagreb and Zurich in April. Next will be Belgrade and Turin in May and finally Bordeaux, Graz, Linz, Marseille, Nantes and Verona in June.

With these additions Etihad Regional will feed the seven Etihad Airways gateways in Europe.
