EasyJet to roll out allocated seating in November

EasyJet (UK) (easyJet.com) (London-Luton) is preparing to introduce assigned seating starting in November. The company issued the following statement:

“As part of its aim of making travel easy and affordable, easyJet is to roll out allocated seating across its network from November 2012. The airline has been trialling allocated seating since April and over this period more than 800,000 passengers have flown on 6,000 trial flights.

Research among these passengers shows that more than 70% think allocated seating is better than easyJetโ€™s current system, due to the improved boarding experience, while over 60% said that they are more likely to use easyJet in the future as a result.

easyJet trialled allocated seating because passenger research showed that the current boarding process can be a source of stress for some passengers and in some cases puts people off flying with easyJet altogether. The key tests of the trial were to improve passenger satisfaction without impacting easyJetโ€™s ability to deliver industry leading punctuality or adding cost โ€“ all of which were achieved on trial flights.

On allocated seating flights passengers who do not wish to pay to select their seat will be allocated a seat free of charge. Passengers travelling on the same booking will be seated together wherever possible by easyJetโ€™s reservation system which uses the most advanced seating algorithm in world aviation.

Some interesting facts emerged from the trial flights:

    • On shorter journeys seat 6A was the best seller while on longer flights it was 1A
    • On shorter journeys seat 16B was the least popular while it was 19B on longer flights
    • Passengers preferred seats on the left hand side of the plane with seats A, B and C out selling D, E and F

Allocated seating will continue on trial flights and the key dates in the roll out across easyJetโ€™s network are:

Services to/from Date
Gatwick South, Luton, Stansted, Southend, Bristol and Glasgow 13 November
Gatwick North, Milan Malpensa, Rome Fiumicino and Paris Charles de Gaulle 20 November
Belfast, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Basel, Geneva, Lyon, Nice, Toulouse, Paris Orly, Madrid, Lisbon and Berlin Schรถnefeld 27 November

All passengers will be allocated a seat for free on easyJetโ€™s flights but will be have the choice of selecting their seat for a fee when they book flights or add them later to guarantee where theyโ€™ll be sitting.ย  There are three bands of pricing, dependent on the seat selected:

      • ยฃ12 for extra leg room (front row and exit rows)
      • ยฃ8 for up front seats (row 2-5 on A319 or 2-6 on A320)
      • ยฃ3 for any other seat

easyJet trialled allocated seating during the summer season, the airlineโ€™s busiest time, to stress test the new systems and procedures. The airline will roll it out during the winter season when fewer people travel to ensure a smooth transition from one system to another. The trial flights showed that allocated seating can be delivered at the same time as maintaining strong levels of on time performance and without adding cost.

easyJetย plus!ย annual cardholders and Flexi Fare customers will be able to select a seat free of charge as well as continuing to enjoy the benefits of Speedy Boardingโ€™s dedicated check-in desk and Speedy Boarding – allowing them to board the aircraft first.

Passengers purchasing Upfront or Extra Legroom seats will be given access to the Speedy Boarding dedicated check-in desk and will be first to board.”

EasyJet honors the new (delayed) BER Berlin Brandenburg Airport and Willy Brandt

EasyJet (UK) (easyJet.com) (London-Luton) is honoring the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) and Willy Brandt (1913-1992) with this special decal on its Airbus A319-111 G-EZEZ (msn 2360). The decals were added in April 2012 but the airport opening has been delayed until next year as reported.

According to Wikipedia, Willy Brandt leader of the Germanย Social Democratic Party of Germanyย (Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands, or SPD) from 1964 to 1987, andย chancellorย of theย Federal Republic of Germanyย from 1969 to 1974. EasyJet to close the Madrid base this winter

EasyJet (easyJet.com) (UK) (London) due to poor financial returns, has announced it will close its Madrid base with the start of the Winter 2012/2013 Schedule.

Today the company issued the following statement:

“EasyJet today announced that after a thorough review of its Madrid operations it proposes to cease basing crew and aircraft at Madrid from Winter 2012/13. ย EasyJet intends to continue to serve Spain but to do so differently by moving its aircraft to other EasyJet bases around its European network which will deliver higher returns for the airline.

The Madrid base is delivering returns below all of easyJetโ€™s other bases. This is due to a combination of over capacity in the Spanish airline market, leading to low revenue per passenger, combined with high airport charges which have more than doubled in the last two years and will be subject to further above inflation increases in the coming years.

EasyJet remains committed to Spain, including Madrid, and will continue to fly to and from Spain out of its bases across Europe.ย  While EasyJet proposes to reduce its capacity to and from Madrid by around 20% in the next financial year, the reduction to and from Spain will be 7%. After the proposed changes EasyJet expects to carry over 12 million passengers to and from Spain next year.

70% of passengers on easyJetโ€™s Spanish flights start their journey from other parts of Europe and demand from these passengers remains strong.ย ย Madrid based customers will also continue to benefit from easyJetโ€™s services after the proposed transfer as easyJet will operate to Madrid from many of Europeโ€™s most popular cities. EasyJet operates over 200 aircraft across 23 bases in the UK and mainland Europe.

The airline is now reviewing a range of options for its eight Madrid based aircraft and 310 crew.ย  All of EasyJetโ€™s pilots and cabin crew in Madrid will be offered a job in the airlineโ€™s other bases and easyJet hopes to retain as many of its people as possible. EasyJet will discuss the proposal with the easyJet European Works Council and the local employee representatives as appropriate.

Any restructuring costs arising out of this proposal will be accounted for in the current financial year. The market price of jet fuel has fallen since EasyJetโ€™s outlook statement set out in its Half Year Results statement of May 9, 2012. Assuming the current fuel price environment continues for the remainder of the year, the benefit from lower fuel prices should fully offset any restructuring costs. Consequently management expectations for profit before tax for the financial year ending September 30, 2012 remain unchanged.

EasyJet expects its capacity to increase by around 5% in the year ending September 2012, compared to 2011, and to continue to grow in the next financial year. EasyJet’s strategy of low fares and our focus on making it easy for our customers, aligned with tight cost management and strictly managed allocation of capital, ensures that easyJet is well positioned to deliver good results for shareholders.”
