Hainan Airlines has issued this statement:
On the occasion of its inaugural Boeing 787-9 flight to North America, Hainan Airlines announced on June 30, 2016 a new collaboration with DreamWorks Animation to feature the โKung Fu Pandaโ film franchise on Hainanโs award-winning fleet, which provides nonstop service between China and seven North American destinations.

The agreement will include up to six specially designed โKung Fu Pandaโ-themed liveries for Hainanโs new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, delivered in 2016 and 2017. These full-wrap designs will showcase characters and scenes from the blockbuster film franchise, including Po, Tigress, Monkey and others, and will remain for a three-year period.
โThe โKung Fu Pandaโ story is deeply rooted in Chinese history, culture and society,โ said Hou Wei, Vice President of Marketing at Hainan Airlines. โWe are excited to partner with an iconic American movie studio and strengthen the bridge connecting China and North America. Hainan Airlines is proud to extend its elite experience and top-rated customer service to celebrate these outstanding films and characters.โ
โStay tuned for an exciting opportunity for fans of โKung Fu Pandaโ, Hainan and Boeing to be a part of this landmark collaboration,โ continued Mr. Hou. โWe will make an announcement soon about how you can create an original piece of aviation history.โ
The inaugural flight of Hainanโs first 787-9 Dreamliner to Los Angeles is a nod to the home of DreamWorks Animation, the Hollywood studio that produced the โKung Fu Pandaโ movies. Hainan is Chinaโs only airline to operate both the 787-8 and now the newest 787-9 Dreamliner in its fleet. The larger 787-9 features 289 seats in a two-class configuration and is an update to Boeingโs industry-leading airplane, which includes features such as Wi-Fi and an all new personal entertainment system.
When โKung Fu Panda 3โ was released in early 2016, two versions of the movie were created, one with animation that matched the English audio, one with Chinese-language animation, a first for an animated feature. โKung Fu Panda 3โ is the first film co-produced by DreamWorksโ Shanghai-based venture Oriental DreamWorks, established in 2012. All three โKung Fu Pandaโ films will be available on demand on board Hainanโs Dreamliners this summer.
โWe are thrilled to team with Hainan for this exciting collaboration which connects โKung Fu Pandaโ to fans and travelers in an entirely new way,โ said Mimi Slavin, Head of Global Promotions, DreamWorks Animation. โThis campaign reinforces DreamWorks Animationโs ongoing commitment to the Chinese market and only serves to further enhance our connections to fans throughout Asia and around the world.โ

Hainan Airlines’ Beijing to Manchester maiden flight successfully touches down at Manchester Airport (PRNewsFoto/Hainan Airlines Co., LTD)
On June 10, 2016, a Hainan Airlines’ Airbus A330 took off from Beijing Capital International Airport and landed at the Manchester Airport after a more than 10-hour flight. China-based Hainan Airlines formally opened a direct air route between Beijing and Manchester.
To welcome its first passengers on the flight to Manchester, Hainan Airlines had the words “Hai! Manchester” painted on the side of the aircraft (above) in celebration of the maiden journey. In addition, Hainan Airlines flight attendants prepared limited-edition postcards and British-themed gift sets for each passenger. The exciting range of maiden voyage activities highlight Hainan Airlines as an international, exclusive air service brand.
Hainan Airlines’ air route between Beijing and Manchester enables the first direct air service between the two big cities. The addition of the route at this time is also in response to and in support of the “One Belt, One Road” initiative, the program rolled out by Chinese President Xi Jinping, to rebuild a modern equivalent of the ancient silk route that joined China to Europe in ancient times, as well as the Northern Powerhouse program, the UK government’s program to boost economic growth in the north of England. The direct route creates not only an air traffic bridge between the two cities but also a new Silk Road in the air.
In 2016, Hainan Airlines opened several international routes, including Changsha-Los Angeles, Beijing-Tel Aviv and Beijing-Manchester. The new Beijing-Calgary route is scheduled to be launched later this month.
Hainan Airlines (Haikou and Beijing) has announced it will launch the only nonstop service from Los Angeles (LAX) to inland China on January 21, 2016. Hainan will connect passengers to Changsha, capital of Hunan Province, a metropolis of over 7 million people famous for its world-renowned cuisine and rich history.
The new route is part of Hainan’s large-scale expansion in North America. On the west coast, Hainan already operates nonstop service between San Jose (Silicon Valley) (SJC) and Beijing, and from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to Beijing and Shanghai. This complements the airlines’ direct routes between Beijing and Chicago, Boston and Toronto, and between Shanghai and Boston.
All North American routes โ including the new service between LAX and Changsha โ are flown by Boeing 787 Dreamliners, making Hainan the airline with the most nonstop 787 Dreamliner routes between China and North America.
Beginning January 21, the newest route departs LAX Terminal 2 on Mondays and Thursdays at 12:35 pm and arrives Changsha at 7:20 pm the following day. Return flights depart Changsha at 1:00 pm and arrive LAX at 10:35 am the same day. LAX times are one hour later after March 12 due to Daylight Savings Time.
