British Airways to axe 1,200 jobs after a large loss

British Airways (London) will axe another 1,200 positions after suffering a six-month loss of $485 million.

Edelweiss to fly Zurich-Calgary-Vancouver for Swiss

Edelweiss Air (Zurich) will fly a weekly flight between the Zurich hub and Calgary and Vancouver for Swiss International Air Lines between May 31 and September 14, 2010.

Bellview Airlines suspends operations

Bellview Airlines (Lagos) has suspended its regional operations following the suspension of its London Heathrow services (the company was planning to restore LOS-LHR on November 1). Further complicating matters, IATA has now suspended its B3 code and advised all travel agents not to book on the carrier.

Bellview started as an IATA approved travel agency in Lagos, Nigeria in 1989 and participated in the repatriation ofย South African exiles funded by Australia care for refuge (AUSTCARE) between 1990-1991.ย  Two years later, it leased a 30-seat Yak-40 and commenced charter operations on October 1, 1992. In 1993 the company commenced scheduled passenger services within Nigeria using a DC-9-32 series aircraft leased directly from the McDonnell Douglas.

TAM Airlines’ (TAM Linhas Aereas) (Sao Paulo) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) (David Barioni Neto) suddenly resigned after almost two years. He was replaced temporarily by Libano Miranda Barroso.

Jat Airways 737-300 skids off IST runway

Jat Airways’ (Belgrade) Boeing 737-3H9 YU-ANV (msn 24140) skidded off the runway at Istanbul (Ataturk) yesterday (October 4) on landing. ย The aircraft was on a flight from Belgrade. There were no injuries to the 125 passengers and six crew. The aircraft is a probable insurance write off. The company has recently been facing a strike by Jat Tehnika, its technical division. The Jat Airways fleet is also one of the oldest in Europe.

A crew fight breaks out on Air India A320!

Air India (Mumbai) yesterday (October 3) had an in-flight fight involving four crew members on flight IC 884 between Sharjah and Delhi via Lucknow. The cockpit crew of the Airbus A320 also became involved!

In other news, Air India will retire its last Boeing 747 (747-400) from scheduled revenue operations later this month after 38+ years. AI has operated the -200, -300 and -400 versions of the Jumbo. The original 747-237B (VT-EBD, msn 19959) was accepted on March 22, 1971.

DHL Air (East Midlands) inaugurated Boeing 767-300 ERF freighter service on September 22 between Leipzig and New York (JFK) with the first two (of six) new 767-3JHFs (G-DHLE and G-DHLF).

Bangkok Air’s (Bangkok) Airbus A319-132 HS-PGS (msn 3142) arrived at Southend with the new registration marks of M-ABCL from the Isle of Man. The airliner is due to go to a new operator.
