Republic Airlines to become an United Express carrier, will operate 32 Bombardier Q400s

Republic Airways Holdings Inc. (Indianapolis) has announced that its Republic Airlines (2nd) (Indianapolis) subsidiary has reached a tentative agreement to operate 32 Bombardier DHC-8-402 (Q400) aircraft under the United Express brand. The Capacity Purchase Agreement (CPA) is expected to become effective in the third quarter of 2012 and continue for approximately eight (8) years. The tentative agreement includes 28 aircraft currently in operation at Colgan Air (2nd) (Memphis) and four aircraft currently operated by Republic in its brand division. This effectively ends the former Lynx Aviation (Denver) operation (see below) for Frontier Airlines (2nd) (Denver). Republic Airlines took over the Lynx Aviation operation on March 19, 2011. Will the four Q400s now be operated in Denver for United?

The agreement with Republic is contingent on completing negotiations and reaching binding agreements with aircraft lessors and maintenance providers, which is expected to occur during the second quarter of 2012.

Frontier Airlines to serve the Aspen market year round with Lynx’s Q400s

Frontier Airlines (2nd) (Denver) will continue to serve the Aspen market all year long. Lynx Aviation will serve the market, along with Colorado Springs and Durango, from Denver hub with the last four Bombardier DHC-8-402s (Q400s) which will now be retained.

Lynx Aviation gets a reprieve, will keep three Q400s to serve Aspen

Frontier Airlines (2nd) (Denver) and the Republic Airways Holdings parent is giving the Lynx Aviation (Denver) division another chance to survive. Frontier announced that Lynx will continue its Denver (DEN) to Aspen (ASE) service under the Frontier brand. Frontier will service the Aspen flights with Lynx’s Bombardier DHC-8-400 (Q400) turboprop aircraft. Service will include one departure per day from October 1 through November 17, two departures per day November 18 through December 15 and four daily departures from December 16 through April 2011. Frontier Airlines is a wholly owned subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings, Inc. (Indianapolis).

Frontier had announced in late July that it would cease its Denver to Aspen service on September 30. However, the company has made the decision to retain three of its Bombardier Q400 aircraft in order to carry on service to Aspen and several other Colorado locations.

In addition to Aspen, Frontier will use the Q400s to serve other Colorado routes, including Durango and Colorado Springs.

Lynx Aviation to be shut down on April 19 and the 11 DHC-8-402s returned

Republic Airways Holdings (Indianapolis) on February 4, 2010 announced it will transition the regional service operated by Lynx Aviation (Denver) Bombardier DHC-8-402 (Q400) turboprop aircraft to Embraer 170 and 190 jet service operated by Republic Airlines (2nd)(Indianapolis). Republic will remove three Q400 turboprop aircraft from service effective April 6, 2010. Another three aircraft will be removed from service on April 19, 2010.

Service will continue to all current Lynx destinations with the exception of Fargo, ND and Tulsa, OK, where Lynx will cease operations on April 5, 2010.

These changes will result in the reduction in April of approximately 175 positions at Lynx, including flight crews, operations, customer service and support personnel. Most employees affected by this announcement will have the opportunity to continue with either Republic or Frontier in similar capacities. Employees who choose not to accept a position within the Company and who work through their release date will be provided severance.

Frontier Airlines (2nd) formed the subsidiary to feed passengers to and from nearby cities to the DEN hub. Lynx operations commenced on December 7, 2007.

Frontier emerges from bankruptcy protection

Frontier Airlines (2nd) and Lynx Aviation (Frontier Airlines Holdings) (Denver) both emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection yesterday (October 1) and both become subsidiaries of Republic Airways Holdings. Republic acquired Frontier Airlines Holdings which includes both airlines for $108.75 million. Some Frontier aircraft are now expected to fly for sister airline Midwest Airlines (Milwaukee) for the West Coast routes.

Lynx Aviation (subsidiary of Frontier Airlines) (Denver) is adding more frequencies to Bozeman, Durango and Oklahoma due to the delivery of the eleventh Bombardier DHC-8-402 (Q400). Both Lynx and Frontier are due to become subsidiaries of Republic Airways Holdings on or about October 1.

Frontier reports a $17.8 m profit in July

Frontier Airlines (2nd) and Lynx Aviation (Frontier Airline Holdings) (Denver) which reports monthly during its bankruptcy protection, reported a $17.8 million net profit in July.

Southwest offers $170+ million for Frontier

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) has submitted a now firm offer of over $170 million for Frontier Airlines (2nd) (Denver). The auction for Frontier is expected to be held on August 13. Republic Airways Holdings will have to increase its offer to be competitive. If successful, WN has already stated F9 will initially be operated as a separate subsidiary until it can be merged into WN. This would be the end of the Airbus fleet (within two years), distinctive tails and brand. Subsidiary Lynx Aviation with its 10 Bombardier DHC-8-402s (Q400s) would probably be sold off or closed down which would impact communities like Aspen, CO. Southwest has promised to maintain all Frontier markets but it is unclear if this also means Lynx routes.

Frontier Airlines to end Grand Junction service

Frontier Airlines (2nd) (Denver) will end Lynx Aviation DHC-8-400 service at Grand Junction on September 14. The route was not generating enough business. Frontier added GJT in May 2008. United will continue on the route to Denver with United Express service.

Republic Airways Holdings (Indianapolis) has agreed to be the equity sponsor of Frontier Airlines’ (2nd) (Denver) plan of reorganization. The plan, which is subject to bankruptcy court approval and various conditions, would allow Republic to purchase 100 percent of the equity in the reorganized company for $108.75 million. If approved and completed, the plan will result in Frontier’s successful exit from Chapter 11, at which point it would become a wholly owned subsidiary of Republic Airways, along with Chautauqua Airlines, Republic Airlines and Shuttle America.  The acquisition also includes Frontier’s Lynx Aviation subsidiary. 

 

This announcement raises several possible scenarios if this acquisition is approved by the bankruptcy court.

1.  Lynx Aviation is likely to be merged into Colgan Air (2nd).

2.  Republic Airlines’ (2nd) Embraer ERJ 170s are likely to return to the Denver hub (and possibly other regional aircraft operated by Chautauqua Airlines).

3. A possible merger between Frontier Airlines and Midwest Airlines (which Republic has an interest).

One thing is guaranteed, there will be changes in Denver.
