All flights will operate on modern Embraer 190 jet aircraft, with spacious cabins and two abreast seating so every customer can have an aisle or window seat.

Niki ends all operations after Lufthansa drops its bid

Niki-The Spirit of Niki (flyniki.com) Airbus A320-214 OE-LEX (msn 2867) ZRH (Andi Hiltl). Image: 911443.

Niki (Niki Luftfahrt GmbH) (Vienna) ended all operations late on December 13, 2017 and filed for insolvency (bankruptcy).

The drastic move was triggered when Lufthansa announced it would drop all plans to take over the ailing former Airberlin-owned Austrian carrier.

The last Niki flight was flight HG2601 from Tenerife Sur (TFS) to Vienna operated with the former Belair Airbus A320-214 HB-IOP (msn 4187) now registered as OE-LOG and operated by Niki.

The airline issued this short statement:

Dear guests,

The flight operations of Niki Luftfahrt GmbH under IATA-Airline-Code HG will cease as of December 14, 2017.

Passengers who have booked their flight with a tour operator are kindly asked to contact their tour operator directly. The tour operator is responsible to accommodate his passengers.

Lufthansa makes further concessions to EU Commission, will no longer pursue Niki

Lufthansa has made further concessions on December 13, 2017 in the course of the intended acquisition of parts of the Air Berlin Group. The transaction is currently being examined by the EU Commission as the responsible merger control authority. In the so-called Phase One assessment, Lufthansa had already offered extensive commitments in particular by giving up slots. However, the Commission considers this to be insufficient and has clearly indicated that an acquisition of Niki and its integration into the Eurowings Group would currently not be approved. Based on this assessment, a takeover of Niki by Eurowings is no longer being pursued.

Lufthansa has informed both Air Berlin and its administrator that it intends to close the transaction excluding the acquisition of Niki.

With regard to the still intended takeover of Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter (LGW), Lufthansa would give up numerous slots in order to obtain merger clearance in Phase One. The revised commitments will be submitted to the EU Commission today.

The Lufthansa Group maintains its plan of expanding its point-to-point business increasingly through organic growth of the Eurowings Group.

A share of the agreed purchase price for Niki has already been transferred to the company as bridge financing. The unpaid purchase price components will now be used for the organic capacity expansion in Niki’s markets. Economically, this leads to a comparable result for the Lufthansa Group.

British Airways is further expanding both its London City and regional operation with three new routes, increased frequencies, two more aircraft and 40 new jobs.

Just a week after the airline announced it is increasing flights from Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol in Summer 2018, today it unveils plans to double its weekday services between London City and Milan Linate and add a new weekday service to Frankfurt from January.

In addition, there will be new summer services from Manchester and Edinburgh to Florence and a weekly service between Manchester and Dublin.

The extra flights are made possible with the arrival of two new 98-seat Embraer 190 aircraft (pictured) in January and April 2018, bringing the total fleet number to 22.

The airline is also recruiting 20 new pilots and 20 cabin crew.

This year British Airways has launched dozens of new flights from London City, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol airports.

Luke Hayhoe, British Airways’ general manager customer and commercial, said: “The new Embraer 190 jets will be a welcome addition to our fleet as we continue to grow our route network and frequencies both from our home base at London City and from other UK regional airports. It enables us to expand both our business and leisure routes, with much improved schedules and timings to Milan Linate and Frankfurt.

“This year we have almost doubled the number of routes we operate compared to last year and the winter season brings a further five new routes, London City to Paris Orly, Prague and Reykjavik and Manchester to Chambery and Salzburg ahead of the new routes next summer.”
