Avient takes delivery of a second MD-11F

Avient Aviation (Harare and Liege) has taken delivery of its second McDonnell Douglas MD-11F freighter. Tragically the company lost the first (Z-BAV, msn 48408) on November 28, 2009 on takeoff at Shanghai.

The first Q400 for airBaltic heads to the Singapore Air Show

airBaltic (airBalti.com) (Riga) is taking delivery of its first (of eight) Bombardier DHC-8-402 (Q400). The Q400s will replace the Fokker F.27 Mk. 050s (Fokker 50s).

FedEx Express (Memphis)ย is donating its logistical services to transport two giant pandas from the United States to China on February 4, 2010. Working in conjunction with the Smithsonianโ€™s National Zoo in Washington, D.C. and Zoo Atlanta, FedEx Express will fly the pandas non-stop from Washingtonโ€™s Dulles International Airport to Chengdu, China.

Tai Shan, a 4-and-a-half-year-old male panda born at the National Zoo, and Mei Lan, a 3-year-old female panda born at Zoo Atlanta, will travel onboard a custom-decaled FedEx Express 777 Freighter (777F) โ€“ known as the โ€œFedEx Panda Express.โ€

FedEx Express will fly Mei Lan from Atlanta to Washington, D.C., where she will join Tai Shan in preparation for the trans-Atlantic flight. Onboard the 777F aircraft โ€“ which is solely dedicated to the pandasโ€™ journey โ€“ Tai Shan and Mei Lan will travel in two custom-built transport containers provided by FedEx Express. The pandas will depart Washington, D.C. late morning on February 4 and arrive in Chengdu late afternoon on February 5, approximately 14 ยฝ hours between take-off and landing.

Boeing 777-FS2 N850FD (msn 37721) has been selected as the aircraft to wear the special “Panda Express” markings.

Quantum Air ceases all operations

Quantum Air (La Compania Quantum Air S.A.) (Madrid) on January 26 ceased all operations. The company originallyย started operations on July 4, 2000 withย an initial fleet of three Boeing 717-200s under the AeBal (Aerolineas Baleares) brand. It was initially owned by Spanair (51 percent) and the GAS Group )(49 percent). However AeBal (Spanair Link)ย ceased operations on September 16, 2008 as part of the Spanair restructuring plan. SAS sold the company in January 2009 to Proturin, a Spanish investment company. Inย March 2009, AeBal was reorganized as Quantum Air.
