easyJet salutes its growing Bordeaux hub with a new logo jet

Salute to the growing Bordeaux hub

easyJet carried 18.8 million passengers to and from France in 2017, with 1.7 million to and from Bordeaux.
The inauguration of seven new routes will bring the total number of destinations served by the โ€œorange airlineโ€ from Bordeaux to 29, consolidating its position with 28% of the French market.ย
easyJet has operated in Bordeaux since 2006, and the opening of the Bordeaux base and the arrival of three aircraft this spring 2018 will bring the total capacity to nearly 22 million seats in France, including more than 2.2 million in Bordeaux, which is an increase of approximately 21%.ย  These changes will mean an additional 400,000 seats during the summer period alone. The new base will also allow easyJet to recruit 110 staff in Bordeaux.
easyJet is saluting this growing presence with this new logo jet.

Stirred to action: Alaska Airlines to ditch plastic straws in favor of marine-friendly stir sticks

From the Alaska Airlines blog:

By Jacqueline Drumheller, sustainability manager

These days, most 16-year-olds are focused on getting their driverโ€™s licenses, playing Fortnite or deciding who they want to ask to prom, but Shelby Oโ€™Neil isnโ€™t your average teenager. Sheโ€™s a Girl Scout who created Jr Ocean Guardians for her 2017 Girl Scout USA Gold Award Project to share her passion to save our oceans and marine life for future generations.

shelby oneil jog gs 2018 Stirred to action: Alaska Airlines to ditch plastic straws in favor of marine friendly stir sticks

Shelby Oโ€™Neil reached out to Alaska Airlines last year, asking us to eliminate single-use plastic stir straws to reduce the amount of plastic pollution that is damaging our oceans.

Shelby reached out to Alaska Airlines last year, urging us to eliminate single-use plastic straws to reduce plastic pollution that is damaging our oceans. Little did she know, we were on the cusp of becoming the first U.S. airline to make this change, building on our decades-long commitment to environmental stewardship.

Starting this summer, weโ€™re replacing non-recyclable plastic stir straws and citrus picks โ€“ we used 22 million last year โ€“ with sustainable, marine-friendly alternatives on all domestic and international flights, as well as in Alaskaโ€™s lounges across the country. For people with special needs, weโ€™ll happily provide non-plastic, marine-friendly option, upon request. ย Weโ€™ve partnered with the Seattle-based nonprofit Lonely Whale, an organization that drives impactful market-based change on behalf of our oceans, to support this initiative.

Lonely Whale isnโ€™t alone in raising visibility of this issue. The Earth Day Network declared ending plastic pollution to be the theme for Earth Day this year, challenging everyone to reduce the amount of non-recyclable plastic they consume.

For Alaska Airlines flight attendant Abbe Gloor, the news was warmly welcomed. One of Alaskaโ€™s most enthusiastic inflight recyclers, she has eliminated all single-use plastic in her personal life and serves as an ambassador for the 5 Gyres Institute, a nonprofit that takes a science-based approach to eliminating plastic pollution.

โ€œThis change is a good thing and a small step in the right direction. When it comes to the environment, we can all do a little bit better,โ€ she said. โ€œIt was all the plastic that I observed when visiting beaches around the world that motivated me to act, so as a company that flies people to beautiful beaches, this makes a lot of sense.โ€

This initiative marks an impactful shift for Alaska Airlines. But the change doesnโ€™t stop there. Besides removing single-use non-recyclable plastic straws and picks, we will be replacing most of our large (32-46 ounce) aseptic juice boxes with aluminum cans, which are more easily recyclable and less wasteful. Last year, we replaced the majority of our bottled beer with cans, which are lighter and easier to recycle.

โ€œI am so proud of Alaska Airlines for joining me, Lonely Whale and many others in the fight to protect our oceans,โ€ said Shelby Oโ€™Neil. โ€œMy hope is that we can continue to rally together and inspire future generations to take a stand and eliminate plastic pollution to help save our oceans.โ€

Be a greener flyer with these on-board recycling tips:

  • Donโ€™t put wrappers, napkins or other garbage into cans or bottles.
  • Donโ€™t forget to recycle your magazines.
  • Bring your own empty water bottle and fill it up once youโ€™ve passed through security.
  • Keep recycling and garbage separate until itโ€™s collected.

Boeing 737-200 crashes on takeoff in Cuba operating for Cubana

Crashed on takeoff at Havana on May 18, 2018 operating for Cubana

A former Piedmont Airlines Boeing 737-200, the pictured 737-201 XA-UHZ (msn 21816), leased to Cubana de Aviation, crashed on takeoff from Havana. Authorities later confirmed 105 passengers (including one infant) and six crew members were on the flight. Three people were rescued from the crash scene but have extensive injuries. The operator is Global Air (Aerolineas Damojh S.A.)

Global Air issued this statement (in Spanish):

The airframe was originally delivered to Piedmont Airlines as N769N on August 7, 1979.

From Reuters:

A Boeing 737 plane crashed on Friday shortly after taking off from Havanaโ€™s main airport, carrying 104 passengers plus crew on a domestic flight, Cuban state-run media reported.

The number of casualties was not immediately known, but Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, visiting the site of the crash, told Agence France Presse: โ€œIt appears there is a high number of victims.โ€

Wreckage was strewn over the area and ambulances and firefighters were at the scene, said a Reuters witness. The fire had been put out, and blackened parts of the fuselage could be seen.

A worker at Havanaโ€™s Calixto Garcia hospital told Reuters three victims of the accident had arrived so far. One had died from burns and other trauma and the other two were in a serious state.

The ruling Communist Party newspaper, Granma, said three people had survived.

The plane crashed in the agricultural area in Boyeros, some 20 km (12 miles) south of Havana. The flight was destined for Holguin and operated by national airline Cubana, state-run TV reported.

โ€œA column of black smoke rose up in the sky,โ€ said Ana Gonzalez, a nearby resident.

Flight tracking websites indicated the flight was CU972, departing Havana at 11 a.m. (1500 GMT).

Boeing Co said in a Twitter post: โ€œWe are aware of news reports out of Cuba and are closely monitoring the situation.โ€

The aircraft was possibly leased from a small Mexican airline called Damojh, Cuban state media said.

โ€œThere is still no information, we are gathering what we can to give correct information,โ€ a Damojh representative told Reuters in Mexico. โ€œAs the day progresses there will be more information.โ€

The last fatal crash in Cuba was in 2017, the Aviation Safety Network said. It was a military flight that killed all eight personnel aboard. In 2010, a commercial Aero Caribbean plane crashed in central Cuba. All 68 people on board were killed.
