Swiss and Etihad to codeshare on the Zurich – Abu Dhabi route

Etihad's first Boeing 787-9, delivered December 31, 2014

Swiss International Air Lines and Etihad Airways are teaming up to offer passengers new codeshare connections in expansion of global route networks.

Swiss passengers may now book flights from Zurich to Abu Dhabi via Swiss (first flight on March 26, 2018). Swiss transfer passengers may fly into Zurich aboard a Swiss flight, then continue on to Abu Dhabi aboard an Etihad Airways flight operated under a Swiss flight number. Luggage may be checked in at the point of departure for collection at the final destination.

On the Zurich-Geneva route, a codeshare arrangement will also allow Etihad Airways’ customers to continue direct to Geneva via the Zurich hub.

The new codeshare flights form part of the cooperation concluded between the Lufthansa Group and the Etihad Aviation Group in December 2016.

Etihad Airways Swiss flights to become all-Boeing 787 Dreamliner services

Etihad's first Boeing 787-9, delivered December 31, 2014

Etihad Airways’ flights to and from Switzerland will become an all-Boeing 787 Dreamliner operation with the aircraft being deployed on the Abu Dhabi – Geneva route, effective 25 March 2018.

The Dreamliner flights to Geneva will complement the airline’s existing 787 Dreamliner scheduled services connecting Abu Dhabi and Zurich, becoming the fifth European city to be served by the carrier’s rapidly growing fleet of next generation aircraft.

Etihad Airways currently operates daily flights between the UAE’s capital city of Abu Dhabi and both Geneva and Zurich.

Introduction of the 787 Dreamliner will also see a scheduling change that will continue to provide attractive timings for customers travelling to and from Geneva. Etihad Airways will be the only airline operating out of the UAE to offer an early morning arrival into Geneva, and the revised timings will also improve connectivity to a wider network of destinations across Asia and the Indian Subcontinent.

Etihad Airways has a fleet of 18 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners operating from Abu Dhabi to 17 destinations worldwide – Amman, Amsterdam, Beijing, Beirut, Brisbane, Düsseldorf, Madrid, Melbourne, Nagoya, Perth, Riyadh, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo, Washington and Zurich.

Etihad Airways’ three-class Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners include eight First Suites, 28 Business Studios and 199 Economy Smart Seats, offering superior levels of comfort, entertainment and in-flight connectivity. On-board décor and lighting have been inspired by contemporary Arabian design, including the spectacular dome of the newly-opened Louvre Abu Dhabi, complementing the signature ‘Facets of Abu Dhabi’ identity introduced by the airline during its livery relaunch in 2014. Etihad Airways has pending deliveries of 53 Dreamliners.

Etihad Airways fires back, claims U.S. carriers got $71.48 billion in U.S. government aid

Keep The Skies Open

Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi), like Qatar Airways and Emirates, has rejected the argument of the “Big Three” U.S. airlines that they have an unfair advantage over the U.S. carriers due to alleged government subsidies. The airline has now issued this statement which strikes back at the argument with their own study alleging the U.S. airlines receive benefits from the U.S. government including the Chapter 11 process which allow them to shed large amounts of debt. Here is the report:

Research commissioned by Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has quantified a range of government and court-sanctioned benefits and concessions received by the three biggest US carriers, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and American Airlines Group, and other airlines with which they have merged.

These US airlines have received benefits valued at US$71.48 billion, more than US$70 billion of which has been since 2000, enabling the nation’s three largest carriers to transition from the verge of bankruptcy to today’s industry leaders, each achieving multi-billion dollar profits.

Last year, the three big US carriers generated collective net profits of US$8.97 billion, equivalent to 45 per cent of the total US$19.9 billion profits achieved in 2014 by the global airline industry. The trend has continued into 2015, with all three major US airlines announcing strong net profits for the first quarter.

The international consultancy The Risk Advisory Group, which conducted the research for Etihad Airways, identified that the majority of benefits which accrued to Delta, United and American came from restructuring under Chapter 11 of the US Federal Bankruptcy Code, yielding them at least US$35.46 billion, and additional pension fund bailouts totalling US$29.4 billion from the US Government’s Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.

Etihad Airways has consistently denied claims by Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and American Airlines that it received subsidies, and has stated publicly that it has received equity and shareholder loans from its sole shareholder, the Government of Abu Dhabi, the largest emirate and capital of the UAE.

Releasing the findings by The Risk Advisory Group, the General Counsel and Company Secretary of Etihad Airways, Jim Callaghan, said today: “We do not question the legitimacy of benefits provided to US carriers by the US government and the bankruptcy courts.

“We simply wish to highlight the fact that US carriers have been benefitting and continue to benefit from a highly favorable legal regime, such as bankruptcy protection and pension guarantees, exemptions from certain taxes, and various other benefits. These benefits, which are generally only available to US carriers, have created a highly distorted market in which carriers such as Etihad Airways have to compete.”

Mr Callaghan said the figures produced by The Risk Advisory Group were conservative, quantifiable and credible, and obtained from public records and statements.

Mr Callaghan referred to a 2011 interview, published by America’s National Public Radio, in which a former Vice President of Continental Airlines, Pete Garcia, was quoted as saying: “Bankruptcy, for the airline industry in particular, is just a way to refinance the business. It is a financial move to keep you in business and give you time to renegotiate with your lenders.”

The Risk Advisory Group identified the largest beneficiaries of Chapter 11 restructuring and bailouts from the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation as:

United Airlines, with combined benefits estimated at US$44.4 billion;
Delta Air Lines with combined benefits estimated at US$15.02 billion; and
American Airlines with combined benefits estimated at US$12.05 billion.

Of these figures:

United achieved one-time bankruptcy debt relief totalling US$26 billion, and pension termination benefits totalling US$16.8 billion;
Delta Air Lines achieved bankruptcy debt relief totalling US$7.9 billion, and pension termination benefits totalling US$4.55 billion; and
American Airlines achieved bankruptcy debt relief totalling US$1.56 billion, and pension termination benefits of US$8.08 billion.

These figures include restructuring and bailout benefits achieved by other US airlines, since absorbed by Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and American Airlines.

Mr Callaghan said the current claims by United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines that they were being harmed by Etihad Airways were baseless, and an attempt to obstruct higher-quality competition.

“There is no evidence whatsoever of any harm caused by Etihad Airways to any of the three big US airlines,” Mr Callaghan said.

“The US Open Skies policy has delivered more choice and better service for millions of consumers, more airline access to and from America, and record profits for the biggest airlines in the US. It is time to refocus on the real issue here – that the Open Skies policy is delivering the benefits it was designed to deliver, and that everyone is a winner.”

Boeing delivers the first 787-9 Dreamliner to Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi) yesterday (December 31) took delivery of its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The pictured stretched 787-9 A6-BLA (msn 39646) was handed over to the fast-growing United Arab Emirates carrier. Boeing issued this statement:

Boeing delivered Etihad Airways’ first 787-9 Dreamliner sporting the airline’s new “Facets of Abu Dhabi” livery which was revealed at a ceremony earlier this year. The colors are reminiscent of the desert landscape, inspired by the culture, Islamic design and architecture motifs of the United Arab Emirates.

The airplane is the first of the 71 Dreamliners that the national airline of the United Arab Emirates has on order which includes 41 787-9s and 30 787-10s. Etihad Airways will also be the first airline in the Middle East to operate the 787-9.

The 787-9 can carry 280 passengers 8,300 nautical miles (15,372 kilometers). The 787-10, launched in June 2013 and in development now, will fly 323 passengers up to 7,000 nautical miles (13,000 kilometers), or more than 90 percent of the world’s twin-aisle routes.

As of November 30, 2014, 58 customers have ordered 1,055 787s.

The first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for Etihad Airways is rolled out

Etihad 787-9 A6-BLA (14)(Grd) PAE (Boeing)(LRW)

Boeing (Chicago) last night (September 27) rolled out of its paint hangar the first 787-9 Dreamliner that will be delivered to Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi). Boeing 787-9 A6-BLA (msn 39646) is painted in the airline’s new ‘Facets of Abu Dhabi’ livery with colors reminiscent of the desert landscape, inspired by the culture, Islamic design and architecture motifs of the United Arab Emirates.

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE, will take delivery of its first 787-9 later this year. Etihad Airways is one of the world’s largest customers for the 787 with a total of 71 Dreamliners on order, including 41 787-9s and 30 787-10s.

The new 787-9 complements and extends the super-efficient 787 family. With the fuselage stretched by 20 feet (6 meters) over the 787-8, the 787-9 can fly more passengers and more cargo farther with the same exceptional environmental performance – 20 percent less fuel use and 20 percent fewer emissions than the airplanes it replaces.

Nearly 60 customers from around the world have ordered more than 1,000 Dreamliners, approximately 40 percent of which are 787-9s.

Etihad Airways’ first Boeing 787-9 will be delivered in December 2014, and more than 40 international routes have been identified for future operation by the airline’s Dreamliners. The aircraft will initially operate between Abu Dhabi and Düsseldorf and between Abu Dhabi and Doha. Services to Brisbane, Mumbai, Moscow and Washington D.C. will follow in the first half of 2015.

Etihad Airways has also revamped its product offering on the Boeing 787 based on extensive consumer research, with refinements in all three cabins.

The new First Suite on the B787 will offer guests a private sanctuary with many new features, including a chilled mini-bar and 5-star cuisine prepared on board by world-class chefs. The new Business Studio offers larger seats, all of which have direct aisle access and convert to a fully flat, pneumatically adjustable bed. The Economy Smart Seat is an industry-first and provides unparalleled comfort for travellers with a new ‘fixed wing’ headrest, maximising comfort and enhancing the sleep experience. The B787 will also feature the latest Panasonic eX3 entertainment system, providing more than 750 hours of on-demand entertainment, improved gaming and high-definition screens in all cabins.

The new ‘Facets of Abu Dhabi’ livery uses a color palette which reflects the varying hues of the landscape of the UAE, from the darker sands of the Liwa desert to the lighter colors seen in the Northern Emirates. The result of extensive research, the design will also be a key feature of the new cabin interiors being introduced on Etihad Airways’ Boeing 787 aircraft.
