EasyJet has continued to deliver sustainable returns and growth for shareholders delivering record profit in the year. easyJet has built a platform for future success including securing its future fleet requirements with Airbus through to 2022 and beyond.

Strategic progress

Drive demand, conversion and yields across Europe

  • Total revenue per seat grew by 7.0% to ยฃ62.58 driven by a benign capacity environment and positive management action including allocated seating, improvements to easyJet.com and the โ€˜europe by easyJet’ campaign.
  • Seats flown grew by 3.3% to 68.0 million as a result of easyJet’s disciplined approach to capacity, load factors increased by 0.6 percentage points to 89.3% and passenger numbers rose by 4.0% to 60.8 million.

Maintain cost advantage

  • Cost per seat excluding fuel increased 3.9% at constant currency for the full year (5.3% on a reported basis). 2.0 percentage points of the cost increase was driven by increased charges at regulated airports in Spain and Italy and a further 0.8 percentage point relates to increased disruption and de-icing costs. Inflationary pressures were largely offset by the continued success of the easyJet lean programme.

Build strong number 1 and 2 network positions

  • EasyJet has consolidated its presence in key airports with over a 40% share of short haul in key airports such as Gatwick, Milan Malpensa and Basel (2) and has built up its share of French regional flying and grown strongly in Italy.
  • EasyJet announced new base openings in Hamburg and in Naples. This was enabled in part by easyJet’s returns focused decision to close the Madrid base.

Disciplined use of capital

  • EasyJet ended the financial year with ยฃ1,237 million of cash, an increase of ยฃ354 million against the position at 30 September 2012. easyJet had adjusted net debt of ยฃ156 million.
  • The Board is recommending a return to shareholders of ยฃ175 million which will be in the form of a special dividend of 44.1 pence a share and is subject to shareholder approval at the Company’s AGM on 13 February 2014. This is in addition to the regular ordinary dividend of ยฃ133 million or 33.5 pence a share based on its existing policy of paying out one third of annual profit after tax.
  • Following the acquisition of Flybe’s slots at Gatwick, easyJet exercised the six remaining aircraft options under the current generation Airbus agreement on October 31, 2013 for delivery in spring 2015.

Commenting on the results, Carolyn McCall easyJet Chief Executive said:

“EasyJet has delivered a strong full year performance and made significant progress against executing its strategic priorities. The results reflect EasyJet’s continued structural advantage in the European short-haul market against both the legacy and low cost competition.

Our disciplined approach to capacity allocation has resulted in a meaningful growth in earnings, profit margin and return on capital employed and we have ended the year with a strong balance sheet and a low level of gearing. As evidence of our continued confidence in the future prospects of the business the Board has recommended to return ยฃ308 million to shareholders through the combination of an ordinary and special dividend.

We will continue to deliver our strategy of offering our customers low fares to great destinations with friendly service so that we can continue to win in a more competitive market. This means we are well placed to continue to deliver sustainable returns and growth for our shareholders.”

In other news, EasyJetย today announced it will launch two new routes to Brussels and Strasbourg from London Gatwick starting on March 30, 2014.

The new flights will operate twice daily to and from Brussels and four times a week to and from Strasbourg departing on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The two new destinations, along with new routes to Jersey, Paris and Newcastle, are strengthening easyJetโ€™s unrivalled business network from its largest base.

EasyJet will fly around 1.3 million more passengers per year from March 2014 to and from London Gatwick using the recently acquired slots from Flybe with around 300,000 of these passengers expected to be business travellers.

easyJet, Airbus and Nicarnica Aviation complete the final stage of testing of the AVOID volcanic ash detection system

easyJet logo

EasyJet (UK) (easyJet.com) (London-Luton) has issued this statement:

During the experiment the test team successfully:

  • Generated an artificial ash cloud over the bay of Biscay by releasing a tonne of volcanic ash using an Airbus A400M aircraft.
  • Measured the ash concentration with a small aircraft flying through the ash cloud
  • Flew an Airbus A340-300 fitted with the AVOID sensor towards the ash cloud and successfully identified the ash from distances of 60km as well as accurately measuring its concentration
  • easyJet plans to continue development with a view to mounting stand-alone units on some of its current fleet of aircraft by the end of 2014 thereby providing a solution which would mean we should not encounter the widespread air space closures of 2010 again

EasyJet, the UK’s largest airline, along with its partners Airbus and Nicarnica Aviation, has successfully completed the final stage of testing for the AVOID (Airborne Volcanic Object Identifier and Detector) volcanic ash technology through a unique experiment involving the creation of an artificial ash cloud.

An A400M Airbus test plane (below) dispersed one ton of Icelandic ash into the atmosphere at between 9,000 ft and 11,000 ft thereby creating conditions consistent with the 2010 eruption. A second Airbus test aircraft, an A340-300, with the AVOID technology fitted, flew towards the ash cloud identifying and measuring it from around 60 km away.ย  The experiment also used a small aircraft, a Diamond DA42 fromย Dusseldorf University of Applied Sciences, to fly into the ash cloud to take measurements which help to corroborate the measurements made by the AVOID system.

The ash cloud produced during the test was between 600 ft and 800 ft deep measuring 2.8 km in diameter. To ย begin with the ash cloud was visible to the naked eye but dissipated quickly becoming difficult to identify.

The AVOID volcanic sensor detected the ash cloud and measured its densityย  which ranged from 0.1 to 1 g m-2 โ€“ or concentrations of 100 to 1000 ยตg m-3. This is within the range of concentrations measured during the Eyjafjallajokul ash crisis in April and May 2010.

EasyJet unveils new cabin crew uniforms

EasyJet (UK) (easyJet.com) (London-Luton) has issued this statement:

Passengers of easyJet, the UKโ€™s largest airline will be greeted onboard by cabin crew in stylish new attire designed by designer Jeff Banks and his team of corporate wear specialists.

A choice of six new pieces has been added for the airlineโ€™s over 4000 cabin crew to choose from in addition to the current uniform worn onboard easyJetโ€™s 1300+ daily flights serving over 30 countries after a comprehensive design, trial and production period of six months. It is the first time since 2007 that easyJet has updated its cabin crew uniform.

With over 3,000 female cabin crew and almost 1,500 males ranging between the ages of 18 and 68 years of age, the new easyJet uniform has been put together with style and comfort in mind. The end result is an easy to wear collection of sharp tailoring and flattering styles which will suit all shapes, sizes and ages of easyJet cabin crew.

EasyJet teamed-up with design consultant Jeff Banks at corporate wear specialists ICW Incorporate wear for the new look, outlining the importance of creating a uniform which would reflect the vibrance and spirit of the easyJet brand and the famous easyJet orange in a contemporary twist on classic styles to look smart and professional. Over 100 cabin crew from across easyJetโ€™s network were then chosen for a series of โ€˜wearer trialโ€™ tests in which they judged the new uniform on categories of design style and comfort, wash and wear performance, easyJet branding and customer reaction. The crew then gave their feedback on the new uniform, commenting on its look, feel, style, durability and whether fit for purpose after each wear onboard, shaping the decision-making process throughout.

The successful trial resulted in the addition of two dresses complimented by a new longer scarf, leather belt and leather handbag for ladies and a stylish new look waistcoat and tie for gents which have been voted a huge success by easyJetโ€™s cabin crew and passengers alike.
