Austrian Airlines to take over some Eurowings routes from Vienna

Austrian Airlines has made this announcement:

Austrian Airlines and Eurowings are repositioning themselves in Austria and reinforce their cooperation. The common goal is to strengthen the Vienna hub and expand decentralised traffic from the Austrian federal states.

Austrian Airlines will be responsible for network planning at the Vienna hub in order to improve the management of transfer traffic. As of January 1, 2020, Eurowings will deploy four aircraft including crews in wet lease for Austrian Airlines.

At the same time, Eurowings will strongly expand its presence at Salzburg Airport and increase the number of Airbus A319 aircraft stationed in the City of Mozart to a total of three. Furthermore, Eurowings will expand its leisure flight program from Innsbruck Airport offering full charter flights to warm-water destinations. Thereby Eurowings is pursuing its strategy of consistently concentrating on decentralized routes i.e. point-to-point flight traffic. Today Eurowings is already number one at four major German airports, namely Dรผsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne and Stuttgart.

Within the context of the closer collaboration of the two airlines, the following destinations will be offered in the route network of Austrian Airlines as of January 2020: two daily flights will be operated to Barcelona (expansion from twelve to 14 weekly flights). Birmingham will be served up to once daily (increase from four to seven flights per week). Up to two flights will be operated every day to Nuremberg (twelve weekly flights instead of eleven), and frequencies to Rome will rise to three daily flights (21 flights each week instead of twelve). Up to one daily flight will be offered to Zadar (thus raising the number of weekly flights from two to seven). The leisure flight program (of Austrian and Eurowings) of summer 2020 will be published at a later date.

Check-in for all these flights will take place at Austrian Airlines in Terminal 3 at Vienna Airport in the future. The existing scheduled flight connections of Eurowings between Vienna and Dรผsseldorf, Hamburg, Hannover, Stuttgart and Cologne will remain part of the Eurowings route network and will be operated out of Germany as in the past. These flights will continue to take off from Terminal 1 in Vienna.

For Austrian Airlines, this step provides added impetus to its #DriveTo25 strategy. The ten additional A320 aircraft already announced earlier this year will be complemented by four wet lease aircraft from Eurowings. In January, Austrian Airlines reported that it would phase out its smaller turboprop aircraft by 2021 and increase its medium-haul Airbus fleet from 36 to 46 airplanes. This change in the fleet composition is currently being implemented. The first of the ten A320 aircraft is planned to land in Vienna shortly. The 37th Airbus will take off on behalf of Austrian Airlines starting in December.

Austrian Airlines gradually reorganizes its decentralized routes

In connection with the strategic concentration on its home airport in Vienna, the decision was made by Austrian Airlines to reorganize decentralized routes between the Austrian federal states and Germany.

In an initial step, Austrian Airlines is reorganizing flight operations on the Salzburg-Frankfurt and Graz-Frankfurt routes within the Lufthansa Group and will likely transfer responsibility for these routes to Lufthansa at the turn of the year 2019/2020. The new flight connections can be booked as of October 23, 2019. The number of flights on these two routes will not change: In the upcoming winter flight schedule, a total of 28 weekly flights will be offered linking Salzburg and Frankfurt, whereas 26 flights will be operated between Graz and Frankfurt each week. The previous flight times will be maintained with the exception of a few small adjustments.

However, overall seating capacity between Salzburg and Frankfurt will increase due to the fact that Lufthansa will deploy Airbus A319 and thus larger aircraft than has been the case up until now. A mix of Airbus A319, Embraer 190 and Bombardier CRJ900 jets will be deployed on the Graz-Frankfurt route. Total seating capacity on this route will remain unchanged. In the future, Austrian Airlines will make use of two Embraer aircraft currently stationed in Salzburg and Graz for flights departing from Vienna to destinations in its European route network.

Eurowings increases frequencies from Dรผsseldorf and Hamburg

Eurowings is adding two new flights to its existing direct services from Dรผsseldorf to Barcelona and will thus be operating the route daily from June 1, 2020 and a total of 18 nonstop flights per week.

The connection from Dรผsseldorf to Koลกice, which will be resumed in the 2019/2020 winter schedule, will also continue in the summer timetable. Flights will be offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from a price of 59.99 euros per route.

There will also be an increased number of flights between Hamburg and Thessaloniki in Greece. With an additional direct connection, passengers will travel six times a week without detour to Thessaloniki from 3 July 2020. These flights can be booked from a one-way price of 49.99 euros.

The Spanish city of Barcelona is world-famous for its architecture. In particular, the Sagrada Famรญlia church and the many Gaudรญ works of art that characterize the cityscape attract countless tourists every year. Located in the northeast of the Iberian peninsula on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, the lively metropolis combines beach holiday and sightseeing in an outstanding way.

Koลกice is the second largest city in Slovakia and is located in the east not far from the Hungarian border. It is artistically influenced and is home to numerous museums as well as several theatres. The National Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra is of supra-regional importance. In the centre of Koลกice there are cinemas, bars, pubs and nightclubs. The nearby village of Wolovezkie Werkhi provides access to the mountains, which are ideal for hiking in summer and winter sports in winter.

Thessaloniki is a Greek port city on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean and the second largest city in the country. Due to its immediate location on the water, it is still considered as an important transhipment point in the Balkans. Lively alleys, numerous bars and restaurants as well as historical buildings form an attractive backdrop for visitors.

Eurowings to add flights to Malta, Belgrade and Florence from Stuttgart

Eurowings has made this announcement:

Eurowings adds new destinations from Stuttgart to its summer flight schedule 2020: Starting on June 1, 2020, the airline flies twice a week, on Fridays and Mondays, to the Mediterranean island of Malta.

From June 1, 2020, Eurowings launches the connection from Stuttgart to Florence in Italy. The route will be operated four times a week โ€“ Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Starting on June 2, 2020, passengers will also be able to fly from the Swabian metropolis to Belgrade on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The island state Malta is located in the Mediterranean Sea and has three inhabited islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. The Blue Lagoon is a popular excursion destination. The climate is pleasant all year round and even in winter at an average of very mild 15 degrees. Malta attracts its visitors with numerous bays, sandy beaches and rock caves to excursions and exploration tours.

Belgrade means “the white city” and is the capital of the Republic of Serbia. Due to its location at the estuary of the Sava into the Danube, Belgrade is often referred to as the gateway to the Balkans.

Florence is the capital of the Italian region of Tuscany and is famous for its numerous Renaissance masterpieces of art and architecture. It was also home to Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. In 1982, the historic city center was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

In other news,ย Eurowings will be flying thousands of football fans from 16 September 2019 to the guest appearances of their favorite teams throughout Europe: During the group phase of the European competitions, Eurowings has specifically increased flight capacity on its Europe-wide route network and offers football fans from Germany, England, Austria, Italy, Spain and Hungary a quick and easy journey to the respective venues. To date, 18 additional flights have already been scheduled: The Eurowings “fan pilots” not only fly between Barcelona and Dรผsseldorf as well as Cologne/Bonn, they also bring London fans to the Bavarian capital Munich. In addition, Eurowings is expanding its capacity on many existing connections by deploying larger aircraft – for example, on flights from Dรผsseldorf to Milan or Prague.

A very special highlight awaits fans of the European defending champion: for the first time, they can fly exclusively with Eurowings from Liverpool directly to the Mozart city of Salzburg for a match. In Salzburg, Eurowings now operates one of four bases outside Germany.

Eurowings has set up a special task force to provide these additional flights at short notice: Specialists from various fields work closely together here to ensure, in cooperation with the respective airports, that football fans can travel easily, quickly and punctually to the matches of their teams.

Eurowings to expand in Budapest

Eurowings has made this announcement:

Eurowings is increasing the number of its flights to Budapest: From April 2020, the point-to-point airline will fly up to three times a day from Stuttgart and up to two times a day from Hamburg to Hungary. Thus, Eurowings complements the already comprehensive service from Cologne/Bonn and Dรผsseldorf to the Hungarian capital. In spring, the airline flies from Hamburg to Budapest twice a day on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays instead of once a day. The service from Stuttgart will also be increased in the coming summer timetable from Monday to Thursday by one daily departure to a total of three connections.

The flight time from Stuttgart to Budapest takes one hour and 30 minutes. From Hamburg the flight takes only 15 minutes more. The route continues to be operated by an Airbus of the A320 family. With around 250 flights per week, the Lufthansa Group is further expanding its leading position on routes between Germany and Budapest.

Lufthansa Group will expand tourist-oriented long-haul program from Frankfurt and Munich in summer 2020

  • Eurowings strengthens long-haul program at Lufthansa hubs
  • North American campaign with connections to Las Vegas, Phoenix, Orlando, Anchorage, Seattle and Detroitย

Lufthansa Group reverses course, Brussels Airlines will not now be integrated into Eurowings

"BIZ class on board" - Best Seller

Lufthansa Group is announcing major changes, especially those concerning the Eurowings brand. The plan to integrate Brussels Airlines into Eurowings has been a failure (several Brussels Airlines aircraft have been repainted into Eurowings colors and were operating under the Eurowings brand). Brussels Airlines will now stand alone under it own brand and will now be aligned with the other network airlines (Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian).

Here is the full announcement:

  • Eurowings to focus on short-haul services in future
  • Commercial responsibility for Eurowings long-haul services to be transferred to the Network Organization in future
  • Re-orientation of Brussels Airlines: closer alignment with Network Airlines; integration into Eurowings will not be further pursued
  • Change in dividend policy to enable shareholders to participate more in the Groupโ€™s success

The Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG is informing investors and analysts about the further development of its airline strategy. The planned actions should sustainably enhance Lufthansa Groupโ€™s value creation. A key element is a comprehensive set of measures to turn around Eurowings, which should be returned to profit as swiftly as possible and sustainably generate value for shareholders.

To enable shareholders to participate more substantially in the Groupโ€™s results, the current dividend policy shall be changed. In future, 20 to 40% of the Groupโ€™s net income should be regularly distributed to shareholders. In the medium term, the Group aims to raise its free cash flow to at least EUR 1 billion a year.

Various planned actions will be presented to analysts and investors today. These include:

  • Eurowings turnaround: a clear focus on short-haul point-to-point operations
  • Eurowings long-haul: transfer of commercial responsibility to the Network Organization
  • Eurowings flight operations: less complexity and higher productivity through a reduction to one AOC in Germany
  • Eurowings fleet: standardization on the Airbus A320 family
  • Eurowings costs: a 15% reduction in unit costs (CASK) by 2022
  • Brussels Airlines: no integration into Eurowings and closer alignment to the Network Airlines (further details in the third quarter of 2019)
  • Brussels Airlines: turnaround plan in the third quarter of 2019
  • Network Airlines: innovations in sales and distribution to make a structural growth contribution to raising unit revenues by 3% by 2022
  • Network Airlines: continuous 1 to 2% annual reduction of unit costs.

โ€œWith the airlines in our Group we are excellently positioned in our home markets, which are among the strongest in the world,โ€ says Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board & CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. โ€œOur Groupโ€™s service companies are also world leaders in their fields. We want to translate this market strength even more consistently into sustainable profitability and value creation. And it is to this end that we are presenting concrete actions today which will enhance our efficiency and generate value for our shareholders. Because we donโ€™t just want to be Number One for our customers and our employees: we want to be the first choice for our shareholders, too.โ€

Eurowings moves to Terminal 1 at Munich Airport today

Eurowings made this announcement:

From June 1, 2019: Instead of Terminal 2, departures and arrivals will be handled in Terminal 1 of Munich Airport from now on. Munich’s second-largest airline will be moving into its new location soon. Eurowings passengers benefit from short distances and can use all Eurowings service facilities easily and comfortably in one connected area.

In addition to domestic German flights, Eurowings particularly offers touristic destinations around the Mediterranean Sea. Terminal 1 at Munich Airport is well suited for this point-to-point traffic with its short distances from the short-stay parking zones or car park P1 to the check-in area and gates. Check-in for all departures is in Area A. Passengers can enjoy attractive catering and shopping facilities after passing through the security checkpoint.

For transferring passengers, a free shuttle service is available, which carries them every 10 minutes between the two terminals.

In other news, the first Eurowings-branded Airbus A320 (OO-SNN) arrives in Brussels on May 31 for operation by Brussels Airlines.
