IAM defeats the Teamsters to represent the US Airways’ mechanics

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) (Washington) has issued this statement:

In a contest overseen by the Nation Mediation Board (NMB), the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) today soundly defeated the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) in an election to represent nearly 4,600 Mechanic and Related employees at US Airwaysย (Phoenix). The IAM received 1,903 votes, or 58 percent of all votes cast in the five-week election, while the IBT received 1,418 votes, less than 42 percent.

โ€œThis victory marks an important milestone for the Mechanic and Related group at US Airways,โ€ said IAM Transportation Vice President Sito Pantoja. โ€œBy voting for the Machinists Union our members safeguarded their pensions and seniority heading into the merger with American Airlines while rejecting the empty promises of an organization with a history of corruption.โ€

In addition to creating uncertainty regarding future representation, the year-long raid by IBT effectively suspended contract negotiations between US Airways and IAM, which has represented Mechanic and Related employees at US Airways since 1949.

โ€œThe election results will allow contract negotiations between the IAM and US Airways to resume without any further delay,โ€ said IAM District 142 President Tom Higginbotham. โ€œWe remain convinced that the IBT never had support among mechanics at US Airways to get this election in the first place. We fully expect the NMB to thoroughly investigate the matter.โ€

In a separate IBT raid on more than 11,000 Mechanic and Related workers at American Airlines, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) presented testimony from former Teamster organizers who claimed that IBT organizing staff forged hundreds of election authorization cards. The NMB is currently investigating to determine if the IBT submitted enough valid cards to warrant an election at American Airlines.

The IAM is the worldโ€™s largest airline union and is the largest union at US Airways, representing over 14,000 Mechanic and Related, Fleet Service, Stockroom and Maintenance Training Specialists.

Horizon Air’s pilots ratify to extend the current contract for six more years

Horizon Air (Alaska Horizon) (Seattle/Tacoma) and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters have announced the carrier’s 610 pilots ratified an agreement to extend the current contract for three years, creating a new six-year pact. Among pilots who voted, 77 percent approved ratification.

“The fact that the extension was achieved three years before the contract became amendable demonstrates the effectiveness of our sincerely collaborative approach with our union-represented workgroups,” Horizon President Glenn Johnson said.

The new contract includes wage increases, improvements in productivity and quality of life, and better job security. The extended contract becomes amendable on December 14, 2018, and was originally ratified in November 2010.

The Teamsters want to represent Allegiant’s pilots

Allegiant Air‘s (Las Vegas) pilots will soon have a choice whether they want to be represented by the Teamsters or continue to directly negotiate with the company.

The airline issued the following statement:

“Allegiant has received notification from the National Mediation Board (NMB) that International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Airline Division has filed an application for a representation election on behalf of Allegiant Air pilots. This will be the first time Allegiant pilots have voted on union representation.

“We strongly believe that Allegiant’s success is attributable in large part to our pilots and the direct, open relationship we have with them,” Maurice J. Gallagher, Jr., Allegiant CEO and Chairman, said. “We are committed to ensuring a fair election and we are confident Allegiant pilots will cast their votes based on the facts, and not rush to judgment based on IBT propaganda.”

Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways aircraft maintenance technicians ratify Seniority Integration Agreement

Southwest Airlines (Dallas)ย announced the Aircraft Maintenance Technicians (AMT) from Southwest Airlines, represented by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), and AirTran Airways (Dallas), represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) Local 528, voted to ratify their Seniority Integration Agreement. This agreement integrates the two groups’ seniority lists. Southwest Airlines finalized closing of the acquisition of AirTran Holdings, Inc., on May 2, 2011.

AMFA represents approximately 1,750 Southwest Airlines Aircraft Maintenance Technicians, and the IBT represents close to 500 Mechanics from AirTran Airways.

Today’s vote by the AMTs means they now join the Pilots, Flight Attendants, Flight Instructors, Dispatchers, and Ramp, Operations, Provisioning and Freight Agents as having successfully completed the Seniority Integration negotiation process. Work groups still in seniority integration negotiations include Customer Service Agents and Customer Support and Service Employees and Materials Specialists.

This moves the merger one step closer.
