Myanmar National Airlines takes delivery of its first Boeing 737-800, painted in a new livery

Myanmar National Airlines (formerly Myanma Airways) (Yangon) and Boeing (Chicago, Seattle and Charleston) yesterday (June 11) celebrated the delivery of the airline’s first Next-Generation 737-800 leased from GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), the commercial aircraft leasing arm of GE. The celebration also marked the first all-new Boeing airplane to be delivered to any Myanmar-based airline.

The airplane is the first to feature Myanmar National Airlines’ new livery and interior, and the airline plans to expand its network outside Myanmar with the introduction of its 737.

“Our new 737 will allow us to expand our network to international markets and offer an even better experience for our passengers,” said Myanmar National Airlines CEO Than Tun. “Investing in new technology aircraft such as the 737 will ensure Myanmar National Airlines continues to be the pride of the country and positions us for future success.”

Myanmar National Airlines, previously Myanma Airways (below), has the most extensive route network within Myanmar, serving more than 25 domestic locations, and is headquartered in Yangon.

Myanma Airways orders six ATR 72-600s, will change its name to Myanmar National Airlines

Myanmar’s state-owned national airline Myanma Airways (Yangon), to be named Myanmar National Airlines in the near future, has signed an agreement with ATR for 6 new generation ATR 72-600s with options for 6 additional aircraft. The acquisition of these new ATRs forms part of the carrier’s ambitious strategy to expand its global footprint to establish Myanma Airways (Myanmar National Airlines) as a major carrier in the region.

In parallel with the new order, following the company’s dynamic development efforts, ATR will assist Myanma Airways (Myanmar National Airlines) to enhance its maintenance capabilities through the set-up of a modern MRO in Yangon meeting the highest international standards.

The new airplanes are scheduled for delivery in 2015 through to 2017. The new ATR 72-600s will completely and gradually replace the existing ATR fleet, boosting the airline services considerably by opening new routes, increasing flight frequencies to existing routes and offering the highest level of comfort to Myanma Airways (Myanmar National Airlines) customers.

Myanma Airways to lease six Boeing 737-800 and four 737-8 MAX aircraft from GECAS

GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), the commercial aircraft leasing and financing arm of General Electric, has announced at a press conference prior to the 2014 Singapore Air Show, it has signed a contract with Myanma Airways (formerly Union of Burma Airways) (Yangon), the flag carrier of Myanmar, to lease 10 new Boeing narrow bodies. Deliveries of the new leased aircraft are scheduled to begin in June 2015 and come from GECAS’ existing order book with Boeing. The contract calls for six Boeing 737-800 models and four Boeing 737-8 MAX models. The aircraft will be delivered through 2020.

Established in 1948 as Union of Burma Airways, Myanma Airways is the state-owned airline of Myanmar, currently serving all major domestic destinations from its main base at Yangon International Airport.

This is a major expansion for the flag carrier as the country begins to blossom under new civilian leadership.

Myanma Airways currently operates a pair of Embraer 190s (also leased from GECAS) and a diverse turboprop fleet of ATR 42s and 72s, Beech 1900s, Cessna 208B Grand Caravans and Xian MA60s.

Myanma Airways to lease two Embraer ERJ 190s from GECAS

Myanma Airways (formerly Burma Airways and Union of Burma Airways) (Yangon), as the flag carrier of Myanmar, will acquired two Embraer ERJ 190s under a lease agreement with GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), the commercial aircraft leasing and financing arm of GE. The aircraft are the first modern 100-seater jets to be introduced in the country. The E190s will be delivered in November and December 2012.

Each E190 is configured with 100 seats in a single class layout. The two E-Jets are part of the airline’s fleet modernization plan. In addition to deployment on domestic routes, the E190’s 2,400 nm (4.448 km) range gives Myanma Airways the capability to fly to new Asian destinations as the flag-carrier of Myanmar.

At the end of 2012, the airline will launch international flights as the national flag carrier of Myanmar.

Myanma Airways’ XY-ADW crashes in Sittwe

Myanma Airways (Yangon) according to Reuters lost its Fokker F.28 Mk. 4000 XY-ADW (msn 11114) on June 6 when it crash landed at Sittwe in western Myanmar on a flight from Yangon. Three people were injured. The aging airliner is probably an insurance write off but this is subject to confirmation.
