Can SpiceJet continue to grow despite the concerns of its auditors?

SpiceJet (Delhi) has reported losses in its last five quarters. According to this report by The Economic Times, the airline auditorsย “in their recent report have cast doubts over the ability of media baron Kalanithi Maran’s budget carrier to run it as a “going concern”. The auditors stated the airline’s total assets are now exceeded by its total liabilities. The airline is also losing pilots at an alarming rate.

SpiceJet’s flight to Delhi hits a buffalo on takeoff at Surat, crew aborts the Boeing 737-800 takeoff

SpiceJet 737-800 Engine Damage

SpiceJet‘s (Delhi) flight SG 622 carrying 146 passengers and crew members from Surat to Delhi was forced to abort its its takeoff last night (November 6) after the Boeing 737-800 hit a stray buffalo on the runway. There were not injuries but the aircraft’s engine (above) sustained some damage. The airline has suspended operations at Surat International Airport in rural India “indefinitely”. The aircraft was grounded and an alternate aircraft flew the passengers to Delhi as intended.

The airline stated everyone on board was safe on its Twitter page but stated “stray animals (are) a growing menace in some airports”.

DGCA has ordered an investigation.

SpiceJet becomes the first airline to put pictures of its crew members on the fuselage

SpiceJet 737-800 WL VT-SZK (14-With All Our Heart) + crew 1 (SpiceJet)(LRW)

SpiceJetโ€™s (Chennai) new Boeing 737-8GJ VT-SZK (msn 41398), named โ€œRed Chilliโ€, has been decorated in this unique color scheme. The airliner flew its first passenger revenue flight on June 3, 2014 between Delhi and Mumbai. The flight, painted in the special “With All Our Heart” livery, was operated by the two captains and four cabin crew members whose photos adorn the fuselage of the aircraft! SpiceJet therefore becomes the first airline in the world to post images of its actual crew members on the outside of its aircraft.

The airline has been running “spot and photograph” this aircraft contests in return for unspecified “prizes”.

SpiceJet orders 42 Boeing 737 MAX 8s

SpiceJet (Delhi) and Boeing (Chicago and Seattle) have announced at the India Aviation 2014 show an order for 42 737 MAX 8s. The order, previously listed as unidentified on theย Boeing Orders & Deliveriesย website, is valued atย $4.4 billionย at list prices.

Development of the 737 MAX is on schedule with firm configuration of the airplane achieved inย July 2013. First flight is scheduled in 2016 with deliveries to customers beginning in 2017. Already a market success, the 737 MAX has accumulated more than 1,800 orders to date and will have 8 percent lower per-seat operating costs than the future competition.

With this announcement, SpiceJet has ordered 90 airplanes directly from Boeing, which includes the 737-800, 737-900 ER and now the 737 MAX. To date, SpiceJet has taken delivery of 31 of the airplanes.

SpiceJet (Delhi) is adding a new international destination. The fast-growing Indian carrier will add Dubai with daily service to both Delhi and Mumbai starting on June 25.

SpiceJet to launch regional operations on September 21

SpiceJet (Mumbai) is planning to launch regional operations on September 21. SpiceJet intends to price its tickets 10-30 percent below the existing prices in India. The first route will be from Hyderabad to Tirupati according to this report by The Economic Times.

SpiceJet prepares to accept its first new Bombardier Q400

SpiceJet (Delhi) is seeking the Reserve Bank of India’s approval to raise $270 million from Canada’s export finance agency Export Development Canada (EDC) for financing fleet expansion, according this report by Reuters. The carrier is planning to add 15 new Bombardier DHC-8-402s (Q400s).
