American comments on Chilean Authorityโ€™s Approval of Joint Business Agreement between American and LATAM Airlines Group

The Court of Free Competition (TDLC) in Chile approved the Joint Business Agreement (JBA) between American and LATAM Airlines Group for both their passenger and cargo businesses. American is currently evaluating the mitigating conditions included in the agreement.

โ€œOur JBA is good news for Chile and for our customers around the world,โ€ said Americanโ€™s Chairman and CEO Doug Parker. โ€œWhile we are currently evaluating the conditions proposed by the TDLC, we are confident that these types of agreements are the future of the airline industry as they have been proven to benefit consumers, local economies and tourism industries, while also encouraging market growth and competition.โ€

Since the JBA with LATAM Group was announced in January 2016, the agreement has been approved by Brazilโ€™s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), the antitrust division of the Ministry of Justice; by Aerocivil, Colombiaโ€™s civil aviation authority; and by DINACIA, Uruguayโ€™s civil aviation authority.

The agreement covers 6,000 agents in 28 states at the American Airlines subsidiary, and provides significant improvements in the collective bargaining agreement, including wage increases across the board and new defined pay scales.

Contract highlights include:

  • Defined pay scales with guaranteed 3 percent increases. Wages at the top of the scales in the first year of the contract range from $16 to $20, depending on location. In the final year of the contract, the top wage range is $17.25 to $21.75.

โ—ย ย ย ย ย A lump sum payment equal to 6% of the employeeโ€™s 2017 W-2 earnings for agents with at least one year of completed service.

โ—ย ย ย ย ย Improvements in shift trade, mandatory overtime and training policies.

โ—ย ย ย ย ย Enhancements to vacation time policies for part-time employees

  • Stronger healthcare benefits.

Piedmont Agents have been in negotiations for a new contract with the company since November 2016. The new agreement was reached with the involvement of the National Mediation Board after agents voted against ratification of an earlier tentative contract.

โ€œIโ€™m proud of our bargaining team and our members who were determined to fight for improvements at American Airlines,โ€ said Richard Honeycutt, Vice President of CWA District 3 and Chair of CWA’s Passenger Service Airline Council. โ€œWe must build on our progress and strengthen our union so that the company treats passenger service agents with the respect they deserve.โ€

โ€˜Just getting started:โ€™ Merger and A220 event celebrates Deltaโ€™s past, present and future

Delta Air Lines issued this update:

More than 2,000 employees gathered in Deltaโ€™s new state-of-the-art engine shop in Atlanta, along with hundreds more in Minneapolisโ€™ Hangar 5 and countless live streaming across the globe to mark a milestone 10 years in the making: the final approval of the merger between Delta and Northwest on Oct. 29, 2008.A220 ribbon cutting.jpg

Standing tall behind the shopโ€™s seven-story glass wall was the newest member of the Delta family โ€” the first Airbus A220-100 to be welcomed into Deltaโ€™s fleet โ€” featuring a freshly unveiled modern interior to match its thoughtful innovation.

โ€œTen years ago today we closed on the most audacious undertaking in our history,โ€ Delta CEO Ed Bastian said. โ€œOur goal was to perform the merger in a way that had never been done. We didnโ€™t have all the answers, but we knew we were going to do it because of the strength of our culture and our people. Look at what youโ€™ve created โ€“ arguably the most successful airline in the globe.โ€

Gil West, Deltaโ€™s Chief Operating Officer, remarked on the progress made since that historic day, including an 80 percent increase in total compensation and over $6 billion in profit sharing since the merger.

โ€œWeโ€™ve led the industry,โ€ said West. โ€œWeโ€™ve moved from bottom to top in every Department of Transportation metric and invested billions back into our fleet and the airports. Weโ€™ve been recognized as one of the most relevant brands in the world. Our merger has ultimately been successful thanks to the Delta Difference and Delta people.โ€ATL Merger and A220 celebration.jpg

Rick Deurloo, Senior Vice President โ€” Sales, Marketing and Customer Support at Pratt & Whitney, also joined the stage and spoke to the shared values of safety, innovation and efficiency between Delta, Airbus and Pratt. The A220 is powered by Pratt & Whitney’s latest geared turbofan PW1500G engine designed to deliver an expected 20 percent improvement in fuel efficiency over similar-sized aircraft when it enters service Jan. 31, 2019.

Cameras cut to Deltaโ€™s second home in Minneapolis with Bill Lentsch, E.V.P. โ€” Flying & Air Operations, who began his career at Northwest and said the guiding principle of the merger was working with employees in partnership.

โ€œAs I look back on when I joined the Delta family, I think about the heart of this company towards its employees and around its customers. We have an incredible heart to do what it takes with passion to ultimately deliver the best for our people, customers and communities,โ€ he said.Employees tour new A220 in ATL.jpg

After the ceremonial A220 ribbon-cutting, hundreds of employees lined up for exclusive tours. Robert Nesbitt, ATL-based Cargo Agent, enjoyed his up-close look, describing the seats as comfortable and the window in the lavatory as โ€œthe coolest touch.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to be on the lookout,โ€ he said.

John Good, CVG-based Customer Service Agent who was part of Deltaโ€™s seniority integration team, said the past decade has flown by. โ€œDuring the merger, we found Northwest was just like us โ€” they had the same concerns, the same trepidation. We were a great match up of people. Now look where we are.โ€

CEO Bastian summarized the occasion best: โ€œWe are just getting started.โ€
