Spirit Airlines announces Chicago O’Hare-Oakland service

Spirit Airlines (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) has announced new nonstop service between Oakland International Airport (OAK) and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD). This new service will consist of one daily nonstop flight starting on May 1, 2014.

In other news,ย Spirit Airlines has also announced new nonstop service from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) to Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and the Thurgood Marshall Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI). This new service will consist of one daily nonstop flight in each market operating from May 1, 2014 through November 1, 2014.

Germanwings adds two more routes to London Heathrow

Germanwings (2nd) (Cologne/Bonn) yesterday (January 20) added two former Lufthansa routes to London (Heathrow) from both Berlin (Tegel) and Hamburg.

Spirit Airlines announces the resumption of seasonal service from Boston to Atlantic City and from Myrtle Beach

Spirit Airlines (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) has announced the early resumption of seasonal service from Boston (BOS) to Atlantic City (ACY). These services, which had previously been planned to start on April 2, 2014, will now be effective on March 20, 2014. In addition, Spirit has extended the dates of its second seasonal flight from Boston to Fort Myers, also effective March 20, 2014.

Spirit Airlines also announced resumption of its nonstop seasonal service to/from Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR).

The resumption of seasonal service to Myrtle Beach from Charleston, WV (CRW) and Philadelphia (PHL) will commence on March 20, 2014 rather than April 2, 2014 as previously scheduled.

By May 1, 2014, Spirit is scheduled to provide seasonal service between nine cities and Myrtle Beach. In addition to its nonstop seasonal service to/from Myrtle Beach, Spirit operates daily, year-round service between Myrtle Beach and Atlantic City (ACY), Boston (BOS), Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood (FLL), and New York-LaGuardia (LGA).

Boston
Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood
New York-LaGuardia

Air Serbia to add six new destinations

Air Serbia (Belgrade) will launch flights to six new destinations in Europe and the Middle East.

Flights will commence new routes toย Beirut (Lebanon), Budapest (Hungary), Sofia (Bulgaria) and Varna (Bulgaria)ย on March 30, 2014, followed byย Kiev (Ukraine) and Warsaw (Poland)ย on May 29, 2014.

The new routes will increase the total number of destinations to 35, a growth rate of 20 per cent in comparison to the present number.

Air Serbia will offer daily services to Budapest, Kiev, Sofia and Warsaw, while Beirut and Varna will commence with three flights a week and increase to daily frequencies from June 2014.

Services to Kiev, Warsaw and Beirut will be operated with Airbus A319 aircraft.

Budapest, Sofia and Varna flights will be operated with Air Serbia’s (former Jat Airways) ATR 72 aircraft.

Spirit Airlines and Association of Flight Attendants agree to a tentative agreement

Spirit Airlines (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) and its flight attendants, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), announced that they reached a tentative agreement for a five-year contract. The tentative agreement, which is subject to ratification by the flight attendant membership, planned for first quarter 2014, was unanimously supported by the union’s leadership. The agreement was reached with the assistance of the National Mediation Board.

Spirit delays flights and passengers due to voluntary engine inspections

Spirit Airlines (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) yesterday suffered through a series of delayed flights disrupting the travel plans of hundreds of passengers, especially at its FLL hub. Some passengers waited up to almost 12 hours for their aircraft to be cleared. Spirit took the extraordinary step to perform voluntary engine inspections of their fleet in the wake of an engine failure on an Airbus A319 last week flying between Dallas/Fort Worth to Atlanta. The A319 suffered an uncontained engine failure and returned safely to DFW.

Spirit announced its inspection have been completed and operations are getting back to normal.

Spirit Airlines Airbus A319 suffers a serious uncontained engine failure

Spirit Airlines‘ (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) flight NK 165 from Dallas/Fort Worth to Atlanta on Tuesday (October 15) operated with Airbus A319-132 N516NK (msn 2704) with 145 passengers and five crew members,ย was climbing out of DFW when the left V2500 engine exploded with a large bang. Smoke filled the passenger cabin and the cockpit prompting the flight crew to don their oxygen masks and shut the engine down. The airliner returned to DFW and made a safe emergency landing.

The V2500 engines are built by International Aero Engines, a consortium led by Pratt and Whitney.

The NTSB and the FAA are investigating. According to this report by the Seattle Times, the event was uncontained engine failure, quoting an unnamed NTSB official.

Germanwings adds new routes from Berlin Tegel and Hamburg

Germanwings (2nd) (Cologne/Bonn) on October 27 will add more routes and schedules for Berlin (Tegel), Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn, Hannover, Stuttgart and Nuremberg as the Lufthansa subsidiary expands as planned.

Turkish Airlines’ 2Q net profit drops 29% to $72 million

Turkish Airlines (Istanbul) reported its second quarter net profit declined by 29 percent to $72 million due to a weak lira.

Wind Jet’s Airbus A319-132 EI-EDM runs off the runway at Palermo on landing

Wind Jet’s (Catania) former Spirit Airlines Airbus A319-132 EI-EDM (msn 2424, ex N501NK) was operating flight LV 243 between Rome (Fiumicino) and Palermo with 123 passengers and six crew members. The airliner was approaching Palermo on its final approach with reported thunderstorms and windshear in the area. On landing the airliner veered off the runway. Both main landing gear collapsed after leaving the runway. The aircraft was extensively damaged. Reports varied on the number of minor injuries, ranging from three to 20 people.
