Etihad Airways and Jet Airways forge ahead with a new strategic partnership

Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi) has added another partner airline as its airline empire grows. The fast-growing airline has entered into a new strategic partnership with Jet Airways (Mumbai) following the final approval for their alliance and 24 percent equity purchase. The airlines have issued this statement:

Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates and Jet Airways have announced that both airlines closed the transaction for the subscription of a 24 percent equity stake by Etihad Airways in Jet Airways. All requisite Indian regulatory approvals had been obtained by November 12, 2013. Jet Airways has, on November 20, 2013, issued and allotted 27,263,372 equity shares of a face value of Rs. 10 each at a price of Rs. 754.7361607 per equity share on a preferential basis to Etihad Airways.

Consequent to the above allotment, the paid up share capital of Jet Airways stands increased to 11,35,97,383 equity shares of Rs. 10 each. Following this issue and allotment of the said equity shares on a preferential basis to Etihad Airways, Etihad Airways holds 24 percent of the post issue paid up share capital of Jet Airways (on a fully diluted basis). Additionally, Mr. James Hogan and Mr. James Rigney, being nominee Directors of Etihad Airways, have been appointed as additional directors on the board of directors of Jet Airways as from November 20, 2013.

Mr. Naresh Goyal, Chairman of Jet Airways said: โ€œThe infusion of foreign direct investment in the aviation sector will result in economies of scale, grow traffic at our airports, and create job opportunities. I am confident that this investment will greatly benefit all our stakeholders whilst significantly benefitting our customers who will now have access to a more expanded global network.โ€

Mr. Goyal also stressed that together with Etihad Airways, Jet Airways would enhance connectivity for tourists, business travellers, Indian families and the wider travelling public.

Mr. James Hogan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways said: โ€œIndia is one of the largest and fastest-growing markets in the world and a key part of the Etihad Airways growth strategy. Through this association, Etihad Airways and Jet Airways will both be strengthened, as will the economies of India and the UAE. By linking our two networks and adding new flights, new routes and more code-share options, travel to, from and within India will become much easier.โ€

Mr. Goyal and Mr. Hogan confirmed that the collaboration between the airlines would commence immediately with a view to delivering network and service benefits to customers as soon as possible. Specific details will be released progressively.โ€

Jet Airways reports a $59 million loss for its fiscal first quarter, Etihad Airways’ purchase of 24% of the shares approved

Jet Airways (Mumbai) reported a $59 million loss in its fiscal first quarter. This is the second quarterly loss for the carrier. Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi) has secured regulatory approval to a 24 percent share of the carrier for $379 million.

Etihad Airways is on a buying spree to acquire minority shares of smaller carriers to code-share with and also to increase traffic for both carriers.

Aer Lingus to lease three Boeing 757-200s for thin trans-Atlantic routes, 1Q operating loss widens to $59.1 million

Aer Lingus (Dublin) is planning to wet lease three Boeing 757-200s starting in early 2014. The aircraft will be assigned to thin trans-Atlantic routes. The company believes there is growth potential on these new routes because of its new jetBlue Airways (New York) relationship.

On the financial side, the company will seek to reduce its staff by 100 positions by the end of the year after its first quarter operating loss widened to $59.1 million.

Iberia to cut wages further as the union talks fail, brings the new Airbus A330-300 to Miami

Iberia (Madrid) is facing more labor strife. According to this report by the Financial Times the company is planning deeper wage cuts after talks with the unions failed.

In other news, Iberia introduced the new Airbus A330-300 on the Madrid-Miami route on April 15.

With a configuration of 36 seats in the Business cabin and 242 in the Economy class, the Business Plus section in the new A330s features wider seats that unfold into perfectly flat beds almost 80 inches long, housed in individual modules, each of them with direct access to the aisle. The design and positioning of the new seats ensure greater privacy and comfort to passengers. Lighting in the Business class cabin changes at the different phases of the flight and the seats offer more space for customersโ€™ belongings.

Business Plus passengers can also enjoy new, intuitive entertainment options, using 15.5โ€ screens similar to that of tablet computers, plus 4.2โ€ touch screen remotes with virtual keyboard, with which passengers can make telephone calls, send text messages, and easily access entertainment options. Each month some 50 feature films will be available, plus 80 TV series, documentaries, some 200 musical options, and 3D games, among many other choices.
In the Economy cabin, seats are more ergonomic and wider (18.1โ€). They are equipped with the most advanced inflight entertainment system: individual 9โ€ touch screens, a wide film and TV series offer, documentaries, as well as a childrenโ€™s programme. Every seat has a connection port for Apple devices and a USB port, while universal power sockets are also available.
Iberia will soon be adding Wi-Fi Internet access and SMS capability for all its long-haul customers. Theย Airbus A330sย is a twin-engine aircraft and is 15% more fuel efficient than the aircraft it replaces.
The A330 already operates toย Bostonย and it will soon serveย New Yorkย andย Chicago. Flights toย Los Angeles, the fifth Iberia destination in the U.S., will be operated by the Airbus A340 aircraft โ€“ Iberia will refit its 17ย A340-600ย aircraft with the new product from next month.
Iberia will be operating two daily flights from Miami to Madrid during the next six months, three more than a year ago. Iberia started flying from Madrid to Miami on August, 1972.

Iberia puts its first Airbus A330-300 on trans-Atlantic service to Boston

Iberia (Madrid) on March 17 introduced its new Airbus A330-300 on its first trans-Atlantic route from Madrid to Boston. It is unclear if the type will be operated to Miami as planned.

AESA, the Spanish Aeronautical Safety Agency, granted Iberia ETOPS-90 minutes authority. Iberia hasn’t flown ETOPS flights since it retired its two Boeing 767-300s (EC-GTI and EC-GSU).

ETOPS stands for “Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards”. Underย ETOPS-90 the aircraft must follow a route that will allow it to reach a diversion airport within 90 minutes if one engine fails.

Jet Airways introduces its first Airbus A330-300 on the Brussels route, starts Mangalore-Dubai service

Jet Airways (Mumbai) is expanding itsย Airbus fleet, which currently has 11 Airbus A330-200 aircraft, with two newly-delivered Airbus A330-300s. The pictured A330-302 VT-JWS (msn 1361) was handed over from Airbus on December 14, 2012 followed by A330-302 VT-JWR (msn 1351) five days later. The new type was introduced onย December 22, 2012 on flights 9W 228/227 on the Mumbai โ€“ Brussels โ€“ Mumbai sectors.

In other news, Jet Airways on January 3 commenced international flight operations from Mangalore with a Boeing 737-800 flight from Bajpe Airport to Dubai. The departure at the Mangalore International Terminal was marked by the lighting of a ceremonial lamp, in the presence of Honorable Members of Parliament from Mangalore and Udupi, Mr. Jayprakash Hedge. Also present at the occasion were senior management from Jet Airways, Mr. Gaurang Shetty โ€“ Senior VP (Commercial) and eminent dignitaries from the aviation and travel fraternity, Mr. Radhakrishna โ€“Airport Director, Mangalore; Mr. Vasudeva Rao โ€“ Ex Airport Director, Mangalore and Coordinator, Karnataka NRI Forum and Mr. Abdulla Kunhi โ€“ Chairman Yenopaya Group. The first flight departed with a full complement of passengers.

The flight 9W 532, operated by a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with economy seating for 170 passengers, departed from Mangalore at 20.00 hrs with a 22.30 hrs (Local Time) arrival into Dubai.

Qatar Airways (Doha) and Gulf Air (Abu Dhabi) have been selected to operate domestic flights in Saudi Arabia as well as international flights to and from this neighboring country. Both airlines will now have to complete the final process according to this report by Zawya.
