Air Namibia (Windhoek) on June 3 will suspend its twice-weekly Windhoek-London (Gatwick) service due to the decline in demand.

Gulf Air will not renew Jet Airways 777 lease

Gulf Air (Bahrain) has decided to not pursue the dry lease option for the “foreseeable future” for the leased Jet Airways Boeing 777-300 ERs due to current economic situation. Under the original agreement Jet Airways agreed to operate the four Triple Sevens under a wet lease agreement for the first six months. After that period Gulf Air had the option to dry lease (operate) the aircraft but this will not happen at this time. Therefore the 777s will be returned around September 2009.

Titan Airways celebrates 21st Anniversary

Titan Airways (London-Stansted) is celebrating its 21st Anniversary this year. It was established in January 1988 and started as an air taxi on February 1, 1988. In December 2009 it will lease a 265-seat Boeing 767-300 ER from GECAS for seven years.

El Al to add Tel Aviv-Luton flights on May 3

El Al Israel Airlines (Tel Aviv) will add the Tel Aviv-London (Luton) route (six times weekly) on May 3. The flag carrier will assign Boeing 767s to the route.

British Airways sells 11 Boeing 757-200s

British Airways (London) has sold its 11 remaining Boeing 757-200s for freighter conversion. The type will be phased out in 2012. This sale does not affect the four 757s assigned to OpenSkies.

airBaltic to start Riga-Tromso on March 31

airBaltic (Riga) will launch a new route tomorrow (March 31) between Riga and Tromso in northern Norway. The new route will be operated four times a week.

Airberlin agrees to cross share with TUIfly

Airberlin (Berlin-Tegel) has agreed with TUI Travel to cross share stock with its TUIfly (TUIfly.com) (Hanover) subsidiary. Airberlin will purchase up to 20 percent of the TUIfly stock and take over TUIfly’s European inter-city routes. TUIfly’s charter section will remain with TUIfly. ย In turn, TUIfly Travel will purchase up to 20 percent of the stock of Airberlin. This agreement is subject to regulatory approvals. If approved both airlines will keep their brands.

Continental is tentatively awarded Rio route

Continental Airlines (Houston) has been tentatively awarded the Houston-Rio de Janeiro route by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Subject to the final approvals the new route will be operated with Boeing 767-200s.
