Airberlin to start Berlin-Warsaw service on March 23 as it expands to the east

Airberlin (airberlin.com) (Berlin) will offer three flights a day on the Berlin – Warsaw route starting on March 23, 2013. The company will also expand to three flights a day on the Berlin – Krakow route also on the same day as the airline focuses on eastern Europe. Airberlin issued the following statement:

Airberlin is expanding its route network competencies in Poland and from March 23, 2013 will operate up to three flights a day from Berlin to Warsaw. The Polish capital is already the third destination in Poland for Germany‘s second largest airline. In addition Airberlin will increase the number of flights from Berlin to Krakow, also from March 23, 2013, thereby operating a total of up to 48 flights a week from Berlin to its European neighbor.

Hartmut Mehdorn, CEO Airberlin, said: “We have strategically revised our network for the summer of 2013. The adjustments and new introductions on the flight schedule are in line with our drive for increased efficiency. In the future we will concentrate even more on our core business areas, that is, our touristic flight programme and our scheduled services. The main priority here is to strengthen the visibility of the airline in strategic core markets such as Central and Eastern Europe.”

On the financial side, in the third quarter, Airberlin was able to increase its net income to EUR 66.6 million (2011: EUR 30.2 million), an increase of more than 120 percent over the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The operating result improved by 4.5 percent to EUR 101.2 million (EUR 96.8 million). Revenue increased by 1.4 percent over the previous year, to EUR 1,395.1 million (EUR 1,375.5 million), despite a targeted capacity reduction of 5.4 percent. Capacity utilization increased slightly by 0.4 percentage points to 84.54 percent (84.14 percent). Yield (revenue per passenger) improved by 3.1 percent to EUR 115.84 (EUR 112.39). EBITDAR (Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization and leasing expenses) increased by 3.8 percent to EUR 279.5 million (EUR 269.3 million). Total equity at the end of the quarter amounted to EUR 186.3 million, which corresponds to an equity ratio of eight percent.

Airberlin recorded a continuing reduction of direct operating costs – excluding fuel costs – as a result of the “Shape & Size” program, which yielded a contribution of EUR 70 million in the third quarter. Over this period, fuel costs increased by EUR 35 million.

For the fleet, AB will cut its operational fleet from 158 aircraft to 135 per ATW.

UTair Aviation selects Row 44 for inflight connectivity

UTair Aviation (Khanty-Mansiysk) has signed a contract with Row 44 for its inflight connectivity. Row 44 issued the following statement:

Row 44, the leading provider of inflight WiFi and device-based entertainment for airlines around the world, is pleased to announce that UTair Aviation, one of the leading airlines in Russia, has selected Row 44 to provide inflight connectivity services.

With the Row 44 platform, UTair will provide its passengers with the ability to enjoy high-speed, reliable Internet access, as well as premium entertainment content, including a selection of live TV channels, delivered directly to their WiFi-enabled devices.

Installations are expected to begin on UTair’s aircraft in the 3rd quarter of 2013.

UTair is the second airline in Russia to choose Row 44, and to take advantage of the company’s growing global satellite network. As of first quarter 2013, Row 44 will operate services across North America, the Atlantic Ocean, Continental Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, South Africa and Russia. Row 44 has also expanded its corporate and network operations to Moscow to support business growth in the Russia and CIS region.

UTair:

Air Onix to expand to Istanbul in September

Air Onix Airlines (Simferopol, Ukraine) is planning to expand to Istanbul from Simferopol starting on September 11 with twice-weekly service. The new airline launched scheduled passenger operations on April 28, 2012 from Simferopol to Kiev (Zhuliany Airport) with Boeing 737s. Today it currently flies scheduled flights to Kiev (both airports), Lviv, Moscow (Domodedovo), St. Petersburg and Warsaw.

Belavia to start twice-weekly Minsk-Barcelona flights on December 26

Belavia Belarusian Airlines (Minsk) is planning to start twice-weekly service between its Minsk base and Barcelona, Spain on December 26 per Airline Route. The new route will be flown with Boeing 737-500s.

Red Wings Airlines opens up a new scheduled route to Yekaterinburg

Red Wings Airlines (Moscow-Vnukovo) will open up regularly scheduled flights from Moscow (Vnukovo) to Ekaterinburg (Koltsovo) starting on August 27. Flights will be operated Monday through Friday. Departure from Moscow at 4 pm (1600) and from Koltsovo at 9:40 pm (2140).

Yekaterinburg is the fourth-largest city in Russia with a population of nearly 1.4 million people. The city is situated in the middle of the Eurasian continent, on the border of Europe and Asia.

Transaero Airlines starts Moscow-Rome flights

Transaero Airlines (Moscow) today (June 27) launched nonstop Moscow (Vnukovo)-Rome (Fiumicino) service with Boeing 777-200s.

Initially Transaero’s flights UN 399/400 between Moscow and Rome will be operated five times a week (except Mondays and Tuesdays) under the following schedule.

Departures from Moscow at 9:15 am (0915), arrivals in Rome at 10:50 am (1050). Departures from Rome at 11:40 am (1140), arrivals in Moscow at 5:10 pm (1710). All times local.

From September 24, 2012, the service will be offered daily.

Eventually Boeing 737 aircraft with two-class configuration including Business and Economy classes of services will be operated on the Moscow – Rome route.

Transaero Airlines:

Turkish Airlines donates its 49% share of B&H Airlines to the Bosnian government

Turkish Airlines (Istanbul) is walking away from its 49 percent share in B&H Airlines (Saravejo) which it acquired in 2008 for $6.1 million. Turkish is donating its share to the Bosnian government. B&H has been struggling.

Turkish Airlines adds Yanbu, its fifth destination in Saudi Arabia

Turkish Airlines (Istanbul) launched its first flight to Yanbu on June 11 as its fifth destination in Saudi Arabia, joining Riyadh, Jeddah, Medina, and Dammam.

Flights will be operated three days a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Yanbu flights will be operated with its fleet of Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft.

FlyLAL Charters changes its name to Small Planet Airlines

FlyLAL Charters (Vilnius) in July 2010 decided to change its name and brand. The company will be now known as leisure carrier Small Planet Airlines.

This summer Small Planet Airlines operates a total of seven Boeing aircraft and performs flights from Lithuania, Estonia, Poland and Italy. The airline possesses the Air Operator Certificates (AOC) granted by three European countries (Lithuania, Estonia and Poland) and has started certification process for acquiring the fourth in Italy. Small Planet Airlines performs charter flights inside the EU as well as to other countries.

The current Boeing 737 Classic aircraft will be gradually replaced with Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft, more modern and capable of flying longer distances. This will enable Small Planet Airlines in cooperation with tour operators to offer a broader range of destinations. The first two Boeing 737NG aircraft will arrive in summer 2011.
