British Airways announces the first routes for its new Gatwick ‘BA EuroFlyer’ short-haul subsidiary

British Airways has revealed the initial destinations for its new Gatwick subsidiary, which will start flying from March 2022. Tickets to 35 short-haul destinations will also be on sale from Tuesday, December 14, 2021.

The airline announced its intention to create a short-haul standalone business at Gatwick in August, similar to its operation from London City Airport, which operates under the British Airways name but exists as an entirely separate entity. The offshoot will launch later in 2022, with short-haul services at Gatwick being operated by mainline BA until the new entities’ Air Operators Certificate is issued. BA short-haul flights will start operating from Gatwick at the end of March, with three Airbus short-haul aircraft initially, ramping ramp up to 18 aircraft by the end of May.

The subsidiary will herald the airline’s return to short-haul flying from the London airport, which had been suspended as a result of COVID-19 in Spring 2020. During the pandemic, several routes were moved to Heathrow airport, some of which will return to Gatwick, as well as being maintained at Heathrow to give customers choice, including Faro, Ibiza, Malaga, Marrakech and Tenerife. In addition, other new routes will be added at Gatwick including Athens, Berlin, Madrid, Milan Malpensa and Santorini.

The new services will be branded and known as British Airways. Customers will receive the same high level of service they expect of British Airways as well as enjoying the benefits of traveling with the UK’s flag carrier including a generous baggage allowance, free water and snacks, free seat selection at -24 hours and frequent flyer benefits which include lounge access.

Club Europe customers will also receive complimentary food and drink and Euro Traveller customers who want to order additional food will benefit from access to the airline’s ‘Speedbird Café’, which features a selection of products from a range of carefully selected British brands.

The airline has already launched a significant recruitment campaign to invite people interested in roles to help the company launch the new subsidiary.

The new services will initially be operated by British Airways, but by Autumn 2022 the organization will be managed separately under the company trading name ‘BA Euroflyer’, consistent with its sister subsidiary ‘BA CityFlyer’. The brand name will remain as British Airways.

British Airways extends its UK destinations this winter

British Airways is extending three of its newest domestic routes – Exeter, Glasgow and Leeds/Bradford from Belfast this Winter season.  Customers will also be able to book direct to Birmingham as the airline further extends its UK network.

Following a popular summer of domestic travel, the extended routes will continue to support vital business and leisure links between Northern Ireland and key cities across the UK.

Flights between Belfast and Birmingham will operate twice daily, increasing to three times a day on Thursday and Friday.  Flights from Belfast to Exeter, Glasgow and Leeds/Bradford will increase compared to the Summer season at 4, 13 and 10 a week respectively.

The airline has also launched a new route to Salzburg, operating from London City and Southampton. Offering customers a new destination idea for skiing this Winter, flights operate twice a week from London City, on Friday and Saturday from December 10, 2021, and once a week from Southampton, on Saturday from December 11, 2021.

BA CityFlyer resumes operations from London City Airport

Photo: Embraer

BA CityFlyer has restarted flight operations from London City Airport (LCY).

The first flight departed on June 21 as flight BA3287. It was the first flight since LCY closed on March 25.

London City Airport issued this statement:

London City Airport has announced British Airways subsidiary BA CityFlyer will resume some routes from London City Airport to Ibiza, Florence, Málaga and Palma this summer.

The airline will also be recommencing domestic flights to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dublin restoring important Anglo-Irish connections with the capital.

The first flight at the airport since operations were suspended at the end of March, in direct response to the Covid-19 public health crisis, was BA3287 on Sunday 21 June. BA CityFlyer will reconnect the Isle of Man and London with daily flights between London City Airport and Douglas.

Commenting, London City Airport CEO Robert Sinclair, said:

“The restart of some services at London City Airport by our home-based carrier, British Airways, is good news for business and leisure passengers and we hope signals the start of the road towards a recovery. We believe there is demand from passengers to get back to flying and we have worked hard to make that possible – putting in place appropriate measures to make the airport safe and working closely with British Airways to restore some popular routes and important connections. We are looking forward to flights beginning to re-start and working with British Airways to grow passenger volumes and build on their route network in time as confidence returns.”

During the period that commercial operations were suspended, the airport has been busy working behind the scenes to create a safe environment for passengers and staff. Designed following expert advice to meet official guidance and best practice standards, measures put in place include rapid contact-free temperature checking technology, crowd monitoring technology, an enhanced cleaning regime using an anti-microbial surface treatment, and social distancing procedures such as one-way systems and Perspex screens. Passengers will also be asked to wear face coverings in the airport.

Despite the changes, the airport has been careful not to sacrifice its speed and convenience, valued highly by City Airport flyers and which is now more important than ever.

    • Ibiza Airport (IBZ); Florence Airport, Peretola (FLR ); Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport (AGP); Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI)

BA CityFlyer recruits new pilots

BA CityFlyer, a wholly owned subsidiary of British Airways, is visiting Birmingham at the end of November as part of a campaign to recruit new captains.

The airline is holding an open day at the Hilton Metropole Hotel at Birmingham NEC on Monday November 27 seeking pilots to operate flights on its growing network.

BA CityFlyer is the leading airline at London City Airport, operating a fleet of 20 modern Embraer 170 and 190 aircraft to more than 30 destinations throughout the UK and Europe.

The company began flying from Birmingham Airport in May 2017 for the first time in 10 years, and together with new services from Manchester, Bristol and London Stansted, the airline currently operates 58 routes to business and leisure destinations across Europe.

The Birmingham event aims to attract experienced direct entry captains to join the growing business. These new captains will operate services out of one of the airline’s two main bases at London City and Edinburgh.

On the day BA CityFlyer’s Head of Flight Operations, Captain Steve Cook, will be on hand to discuss the airline, career, lifestyle, selection and application process together with fleet managers and representatives from rostering and HR.

Captain Steve Cook said: “As BA CityFlyer continues to grow, we are recruiting captains to play an important role in our continuing success. As an airline we have a proud reputation for safety and highly trained professionals and we are coming to Birmingham to search for exceptional individuals to join us. “

As well as an impressive training record, new captains will need to have a passion for delivering top class customer service.

Steve added: “Our customers are at the heart of our business and it’s important that all our crew combine their flying skills with people skills and understand the importance of excellent onboard service.”

BA CityFlyer currently has 215 pilots, 104 captains and 111 first officers. The airline is also one of the biggest employers of female pilots, representing 15 per cent of the workforce in total, including eight captains.

British Airways to open the London City-Dublin route on October 26

British Airways (London) on October 26 will start daily London (City)-Dublin flights. The new route will be operated by BA CityFlyer.

In other news, British Airways customers will have access to new destinations and scores more routes when the airline adds its flight code to more than 170 Vueling Airlines (Barcelona) services.

According to the airline, “This significant move for the two International Airlines Group (IAG) airlines heralds the beginning of a closer relationship with more codeshare routes planned for the future.”

British Airways customers will be able to book Vueling flights through all BA sales channels, including ba.com, and collect Avios on these bookings. The codeshare routes are largely centred on Vueling’s operation in Italy with 37 international and 11 domestic routes available from Vueling’s Rome Fiumicino base. These include the destinations, new to BA customers, of Brindisi, Palermo, Lamezia, Valencia, Split and Nantes. Other new routes on offer through the codeshare include Heathrow to Bilbao and La Coruña, Cardiff to Malaga and Alicante, and Edinburgh to Barcelona. Tickets for the codeshare routes go on sale from June 17 for travel from June 24, 2014.

BA European Cabin (LRW)

Finally, British Airways has unveiled newly-designed seats and cabin interiors for its short-haul aircraft flying across its European and domestic networks from Heathrow and Gatwick.

Fitting-out work begins this week on the first of the 95 Airbus short-haul aircraft, installing elegant new designs that take inspiration from the airline’s most recent fleet entrants, the A380 and Boeing 787.

According to the airline, “The elegant charcoal grey leather seats are slimmer and ergonomically designed to enable the addition of extra seats in the Euro Traveller (economy) cabin to allow more low fares.

Innovative design maximizes personal space and comfort, with chair backs devised to provide more knee space for the customer behind. Customers can also make use of an eye-level seatback tablet-holder, which can also provide storage for magazines. A four way moveable headrest provides comfort and support. And the seat back table moves in and out to provide optimum positioning.

The new Club Europe, featuring a silver British Airways speedmarque on the front wall, will maintain its 2:2 configuration with the middle seat free. The seats will be bridged with a stylish new ‘central console’ table, providing Club customers with improved functional space. This table provides inlaid leather mats for drinks, snacks and personal devices, freeing up the main table for work or a meal.

Contemporary LED lighting systems, inspired by the airline’s newest long-haul cabins, will include blue tones for boarding, a relaxing candlelit mood for dining and a restful gentle white for cruising and landing.

As part of its investment in short-haul for Club Europe customers, British Airways has also recently invested in significant re-designs of its domestic lounges in Belfast, Glasgow and Edinburgh.”

The new cabin is a testament to British design. The new seats are manufactured by B/E Aerospace in Kilkeel, Northern Ireland, the leather for the seat covers and pads on the ‘central console’ is supplied by Andrew Muirhead & Son Ltd in Glasgow and the decorative stitching on the Club Europe seats has been developed by Prototrim, a car seat design and dressing specialist based in Milton Keynes.

The new interiors, to be fitted across the Airbus fleet over the next 12 months, are the most dramatic of a series of changes to the airline’s short-haul flights. It has already introduced a range of new fare options including hand-baggage only, semi-flex and day returns, which are proving enormously popular with customers. Following the success of day return fares from London, the company will today start rolling out day return fares for European travellers coming to London.

The new cabins will also deliver significant environmental benefits, saving an estimated five per cent in CO2 per passenger/km, contributing toward the airline’s target of reducing net carbon emissions by 50 per cent by 2050.

To enhance its short-haul services British Airways is in discussions with Inmarsat about leading Europe in a new era of broadband in the air. Starting with UK domestic routes they intend to roll-out Europe’s first ground-based 4G broadband network giving customers the internet access they expect on the ground while in the air.
