SriLankan Airlines takes delivery of its first Airbus A330-300

SriLankan Airlines (Colombo), the national carrier of Sri Lanka, yesterday (October 30) took delivery of its first (of six) Airbus A330-300 becoming a new operator for the type. The wide-body aircraft arrived at Colombo International Airport, having flown from Toulouse, France, and joins the airlinesโ€™ existing fleet of A320, A321, A330-200 and A340-300 aircraft. SriLankan will take delivery of a further five A330-300s.

SriLankan Airlines and Airbus embarked upon a long-term, strategic partnership in 1993 when the airline began operating the A320 and A340. It has since grown to be an all Airbus operator, and is now an award winning carrier, expanding and diversifying its wide range of products and services to drive the countryโ€™s ongoing boom in tourism and economic development.

The carrier will introduce the new type on November 9 on a one-time Colombo-London (Heathrow) roundtrip followed by the Colombo-Bangkok-Guangzhou route on November 11 and finally the Colombo and Tokyo (Narita) route on November 15. The airline will also use the new type to Beijing and Shanghai (Pudong).

Hawaiian Airlines (Honolulu) announced that it will introduce new nonstop flights between Honolulu and Seoul-Incheon International Airport starting in January 2011, pending approval from South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (MLTM).

The announcement follows Hawaiian’s plans to begin daily service between Honolulu and Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport later this year and is seen as the latest step in Hawaiian’s long-term plans to expand its service in Asia.

Hawaiian will initially operate its new service four times weekly using 264-seat Boeing 767-300 ER aircraft (later with the pictured new Airbus A330-200 aircraft), adding more than 54,000 new air seats annually between Honolulu and Incheon. Hawaiian Airlines (Honolulu) yesterday (April 28) began its long-range fleet renewal and expansion program by taking delivery of the first of up to 27 new, wide-body Airbus aircraft that will be integrated into its fleet over the next decade.

Hawaiian took possession of the 294-seat Airbus A330-243 registered N380HA (msn 1104) in a formal acceptance ceremony at the Airbus factory in Toulouse, France.

In keeping with Hawaiian Airlines’ heritage, today’s ceremony showcased Hawaii’s culture and traditions, with the performing of Hawaiian music and hula, the presentation of a special Hawaiian ‘oli (chant) written for the occasion, and a traditional Hawaiian blessing.

Attendees included a group of more than 200 Hawaiian Airlines employees and their guests who made the trip of 7,760 miles from Honolulu to Toulouse to witness this momentous event for the company.

The new A330 is scheduled to arrive at Honolulu International Airport on the morning of May 3, after which the aircraft and its flight crews will undergo the preparations needed to start service on the Honolulu-Los Angeles route in early June.

Hawaiian plans to have up to 27 new Airbus aircraft as part of its fleet by the end of this decade. Hawaiian is leasing three A330s that are joining the fleet this year, and has signed a purchase agreement with Airbus to acquire seven A330s starting in 2011 and six A350-800 XWB (Extra Wide-Body) aircraft starting in 2017, as well as purchase rights for an additional five A330s and six A350s.
