Air France-KLM Group steps up cooperation with QANTAS Group

Air France-KLM released this statement:

Loyalty Programs Collaborate to Enhance Customer Value Proposition

After the resumption of codeshare cooperation in 2018, offering best-in-class solutions to fly between Europe and Australia via Singapore and Hong Kong, the Air France-KLM Group and Qantas Group have continued working on further cooperation opportunities for the benefit of their respective customers.

Starting December 9, 2019 members of Flying Blue, the loyalty program used by the airlines of the Air France-KLM Group, can earn1 miles and XP (Experience Points) as well as spend miles on Qantas flights.

Flying Blue elite members will also have access to additional benefits such as priority airport services and additional checked baggage allowance when traveling on Qantas.

New Codeshare with Jetstar

By the end of December, both Air France and KLM plan to launch a codeshare cooperation with Jetstar Airways and Jetstar Asia Airways, two airlines which are part of the Qantas Group portfolio, connecting respectively in Denpasar and Singapore, thus expanding customer travel options to Southeast Asia and Australia.

Air France and KLM customers will benefit from a seamless travel experience with single ticket itineraries and through-checked baggage.

Under this agreement, Air France and KLM customers will have access to a wider range of destinations in Southeast Asia. Connecting in Singapore from Amsterdam or Paris, Air France and KLM will place their code on 12 additional destinations2 operated by Jetstar Asia Airways: Da Nang (Vietnam), Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), Denpasar (Indonesia), Medan (Indonesia), Surabaya (Indonesia), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Siem Reap (Cambodia), Kula Lumpur (Malaysia), Penang (Malaysia), Phuket (Thailand), Yangon (Myanmar), and Darwin (Australia).

During the winter 2019 season, KLM plans to implement codeshares with Jetstar Airways providing itineraries beyond its Denpasar flight to four destinations in Australia: Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney2.

Also expected during December 2019, Air France, KLM and Qantas will extend their codeshare to flights connecting in Bangkok, on top of the existing codeshare via Singapore and Hong Kong, and providing a third route to connect Amsterdam and Paris with Sydney.

Additionally, the two airline groups continue to explore opportunities like potential cooperation with airport lounges.

(1) Earning of miles and XP is only possible on Qantas operated flights that are marketed by Air France, KLM or Qantas
(2) All subject to governmental authorizations

Jetstar Airways unveils a logo jet promoting Northern Tasmania

Jetstar Airways has made this announcement:

Launceston Airport has led the way in a campaign that promotes Northern Tasmania to thousands of domestic travelers each day by commissioning spectacular new Jetstar Airbus A320 aircraft (VH-VQK) livery.

On social media:

The livery, which features Northern Tasmaniaโ€™s top tourism attractions such as Cradle Mountain, Wineglass Bay, Cataract Gorge and the Bay of Fires, was unveiled today on JQ737 flying between Melbourne and Launceston airports.

Scenic images on the aircraft exterior have also been replicated throughout the plane, on tray tables and overhead cabin storage. A bespoke 32-page Northern Tasmania travel guide has also been developed for in-flight reading, full of local recommendations and tips.

To celebrate the livery reveal, passengers flying on the planeโ€™s first trip to Launceston were treated to local produce and gifts on arrival at the airport.

Launceston Airport General Manager Paul Hodgen said the aircraft created an unrivalled opportunity to promote key local tourism attractions.

โ€œIโ€™m thrilled to showcase Launceston and the region in such a grand way, highlighting the many natural attractions that are in close proximity to Launceston Airport,โ€ said Mr Hodgen.

โ€œThe campaign is part of our strategy to encourage domestic travellers to fly into Launceston as the tourism gateway to Tasmania, before they continue on to explore the rest of the state, putting Launceston Airport firmly โ€œon the mapโ€.

โ€œWhether youโ€™re a foodie, thrill-seeker or interested in the arts, our city and region appeals to a wide range of markets and we are so pleased to be able to spread the word about Launceston across the Jetstar Australia network.โ€

Nigel Fanning, Jetstar Head of Product said the airline is excited to work with Launceston Airport and Tourism Northern Tasmania to promote the city and the state with this great livery.

โ€œWeโ€™ve been flying to Launceston for almost 15 years. Last year, we carried around 800,000 customers to and from Tasmania with around two thirds of those fares sold for under $100โ€

Jetstar operates more flights to Tasmania than any other airline, with close to 50 direct return-services from Launceston to Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney a week.

The Launceston-themed Jetstar Airbus A320 will be operating until the end of July.

QANTAS Airways goes double daily to Tokyo, Japan

QANTAS Airways (Sydney) added a significant expansion of its presence in Japan with the launch of double daily services between Australia and Tokyo this weekend.

QANTAS flight QF25 departed from Sydney to Tokyoโ€™s Haneda Airport on July 31, followed by the departure of QF61 from Brisbane to Narita Airport yesterday (August 1).

QANTASโ€™ Brisbane-Narita launch flights will be operated by the airlineโ€™s refurbished Airbus A330 aircraft, with lie-flat seats in Business, brand new Economy seats and new inflight entertainment.

The refit of these aircraft, which takes one month each, is being done at QANTASโ€™ heavy maintenance facility in Brisbane. These aircraft are being introduced progressively onto Asian routes.

To celebrate the launch of the new Japan services, customers onboard flights departing to Narita and Haneda and in Qantas International Lounges in Sydney and Brisbane will be treated to Japanese-inspired menus for the first week of August, including Tuna Tataki Nigiri in Business, and Green Tea flavoured Kit Kats in Premium Economy and Economy.

The launch of double daily QANTAS flights to Tokyo follows Jetstarโ€™s introduction of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner on the Melbourne-Narita route earlier this month, increasing the available seats between the two cities by 20 per cent over the next year. The upgrade from Airbus A330 aircraft to the higher capacity Boeing 787 will be complemented by an increase in flights from four to six per week December to March to meet growing demand for flights between Melbourne and Japan in the peak season.

Jetstar Airways (Melbourne) has announced a series of new Boeing 787 routes introducing the new type to new destinations. The 787 will be operated from Melbourne (Tullamarine) to Auckland from February 26 through March 28, 2014.

Jetstar took delivery ofย its first 787, the pictured 787-8 VH-VKA, on October 7 and received its second in December and third in early January 2014.

Jetstar introduced the Boeing 787 from Melbourne to the Gold Coast) on November 13, 2013 (see video below).

Jetstar introduced the 787 on its first international route on December 18 between Melbourne and Denpasar, Bali. The budget airline will add the new type on the Sydney-Denpasar, Bali route next month and Sydney-Phuket, Thailand in February. The Brisbane-Denpasar, Bali route will follow on April 16.

QANTAS Group issues a loss warning, asks the government for an even playing field

The QANTAS Group (QANTAS Airways) (Sydney) has announced a market update, accelerated cost reductions and a capital expenditure and structural review, in response to fundamentally changed market conditions.ย

Market update

The Group expects to report an underlying loss before tax in the range of $250 million to $300 million for the six months ending December 31, 2013.ย  Trading conditions saw a marked deterioration in November in particular, with both passenger loads and yields below the already negative trends for the year to date.

The Group can also provide the following guidance for the first half of FY14:

    • Group capacity is expected to increase by 1.1 per cent in 1H FY14 compared to 1H FY13. Group Domestic capacity (comprising QANTAS Domestic, QANTAS Link and Jetstar Domestic) is expected to increase by 1.9 per cent in 1H FY14 compared to 1H FY13;
    • Total domestic market capacity is expected to increase by approximately 2.7 per cent, driven by estimated competitor capacity growth of 3.9 per cent;
    • Group yield (excluding the impact of foreign exchange movements) is expected to be approximately 3.5 per cent lower in 1H FY14 compared to 1H FY13, largely due to increased capacity in the domestic and international markets;
    • Group loads are expected to be 1.6 percentage points lower in 1H FY14 compared to 1H FY13; and
    • Underlying fuel costs (excluding the impact of the carbon tax) for 1H FY14 are expected to be approximately $2.27 billion, an increase of $88 million from 1H FY13.

The outlook for the second half of FY14 remains volatile and, given the uncertainty in global economic conditions, fuel prices and foreign exchange rates, it is not possible to provide further guidance at this time.

QANTAS CEO Alan Joyce said the circumstances demanded urgent action.

โ€œWe will do whatever we need to do to secure the QANTAS Groupโ€™s future,โ€ Mr Joyce said.

โ€œThe challenges we now face are immense โ€“ but we will overcome them and we will continue to build a stronger and better QANTAS for Australia.

โ€œSince the Global Financial Crisis, QANTAS has confronted a fiercely difficult operating environment โ€“ including the strong Australian dollar and record jet fuel costs, which have exacerbated QANTASโ€™ high cost base.

โ€œThe Australian international market is the toughest anywhere in the world.

โ€œOur competitors in the international market, almost all owned or generously supported by their governments, have increased capacity to pursue Australian dollar profits, changing the shape of the market permanently.

โ€œSince early 2012, there has also been an unprecedented distortion of the Australian domestic market, with Virgin Australiaโ€™s strategy to seek majority ownership and massive financial backing from foreign government-owned airlines (see Appendix 1).

โ€œThis foreign government capital has been used to finance dramatic increases in domestic capacity, with profound implications for the future of Australiaโ€™s aviation industry.ย  In November, Virgin Australia signaled its intention to continue its strategy, which is designed to weaken QANTAS in the domestic market, with a $300 million-plus injection from its foreign owners.

โ€œThe uneven playing field in Australian aviation is being tilted further.”

โ€œWe cannot and we will not stand still in these extraordinary circumstances.”

โ€œAs we take these urgent actions, we will continue to take the fight to the competition and strengthen our leading position in the domestic market, and we will continue the turnaround of Qantas International.โ€

Accelerated cost reduction program

The Group will make accelerated cost reductions across all areas of the business, to achieve total cost savings of $2 billion over three years.

The existing QANTAS Transformation program will be accelerated, with an expanded mandate to achieve these targets, including the following steps:

    • Head count reduction of at least 1,000 positions within 12 months, with an ongoing review
    • CEO and Board pay cut
    • Pay freeze and no FY14 bonus for executives
    • Review of spending with top 100 suppliers
    • Network optimisation and improved fleet utilization
    • Further overhead reductions

Mr Joyce said the Group had already made significant progress in becoming leaner and more efficient.

โ€œWe have reduced the Groupโ€™s unit costs, excluding fuel, by a total of 19 per cent since FY09, including by 5 per cent in FY13 (see Appendix 2).

โ€œBut these actions are not enough to deal with the current situation.โ€

Capital expenditure and structural review

Given the deterioration in earnings, the Group no longer expects to generate positive net free cash flow in the current financial year.

The Group will conduct a review of all planned capital expenditure to achieve further substantial reductions to ensure that the business generates positive net free cash flow from FY15.

This continues the deep cuts to capital expenditure already achieved since 2011.

The Group will also launch an immediate review to identify structural changes that could potentially unlock sources of capital and value for shareholders.ย  No options will be excluded from the review.

Mr Joyce said the Group would take all steps necessary to respond to the toughest market conditions it had ever faced.

โ€œWe will focus relentlessly on cutting costs and improving productivity, while maintaining our competitive advantages as a business,โ€ Mr Joyce said.

Australiaโ€™s best airline for customers

Mr Joyce said customers would remain at the heart of the Groupโ€™s strategy, with a continued focus on service in all areas.

โ€œWe have Australiaโ€™s best airline and loyalty program, with nearly 10 million loyal frequent flyers,โ€ Mr Joyce said.ย  โ€œOver the past two years, we have developed a global network based on strategic alliances, including the ground-breaking Emirates partnership and expanding relationships in Asia.

โ€œThe QANTAS customer experience is the best it has ever been.ย  After an intensive fleet renewal program, our average passenger aircraft age is now below eight years, the youngest in two decades, and we have revitalised service with a focus on training and new technology. ย Customer satisfaction is soaring, with record scores in both the international and domestic markets.โ€

Discussions with the Australian Government

โ€œAs we work through our cost reductions, capital expediture and structural review, no options will be off the table,โ€ Mr Joyce said.

โ€œPolitical leaders recognize QANTASโ€™ strategic importance, its critical role in providing essential air services, and the benefits to Australia of a strong and viable national carrier.

โ€œNone of the measures being discussed with the government would alleviate the need for us to take the comprehensive actions we have announced today.ย  Government action will, however, be key in enabling us to keep competing effectively on a level playing field.โ€
