UPS exceeds expectations, produces an operating profit of $1.43 billion

UPS-United Parcel System (Atlanta) has announced diluted earnings per share of $0.88 for the first quarter of 2011, a 24% improvement over the adjusted $0.71 for the prior-year period. Global revenue grew 7.3%, producing a 21% increase in operating profit to $1.4 billion.

On a reported basis, diluted earnings per share and operating profit increased 66% and 37%, respectively, over the same period last year.

UPS Airlines mechanics ratify a new contract

UPS Airlines (Atlanta and Louisville) 1,200 mechanics after four years of negotiations, ratified a new contract that raises their pay retroactively and requires no contributions to cover their health care.

UPS launches next-day service from Hong Kong to Europe

UPS-United Parcel Service (UPS Airlines) (Atlanta and Louisville) today announced the launch of direct flights from Hong Kong to Europe.

With the addition of four direct flights, UPS now offers a total of 11 flights from Hong Kong to Europe each week.

The new daily direct flights will link Hong Kong with Cologne, Germany, Monday to Thursday using Boeing 747-400 freighter aircraft. The freighters will operate in addition to the seven flights that UPS already offers each week between Hong Kong and Cologne via Dubai.

UPSโ€™s Cologne air hub is the centerpiece of the companyโ€™s extensive and integrated European air and ground network, which includes 460 operating facilities and 156 daily intra-Europe flight segments, ensuring UPS can deliver to every address in Europe.

UAE investigators consider claims by al-Qaida concerning the UPS Boeing 747-400 crash

United Arab Emirates’ (Dubai) civil aviation investigators do not believe a terrorist bomb explosion caused the September 3, 2010 crash of an UPS Airlines’ Boeing 747-400F freighter near Dubai but are taking seriously a claim by Yemen’s al-Qaida that it brought down the plane.

UPS loses N571UP and two crew members at Dubai

UPS Airlines (United Parcel Service) (Atlanta and Louisville) yesterday (September 3) lost its Boeing 747-44AF N571UP (msn 35668) and the two crew members on board when it crashed on takeoff at Dubai.

UPS’ 1Q Earnings Jump 37% on Revenue Increase of 7%

UPS (Atlanta and Louisville) posted adjusted diluted earnings per share of $0.71 for the first quarter of 2010, a 37% gain over the adjusted $0.52 for the prior-year period. Revenue increased 7% to $11.7 billion. Growth in the international package and supply chain businesses, yield improvement and increased operating leverage resulted in margin expansion in all business segments. The corporation posted a $1 billion operating profit in the first quarter.

UPS starts pilot furlough program

UPS-United Parcel Service (Atlanta and Louisville) yesterday (February 8) announced plans to furlough at least 300 of its airline pilots, but at the same time continued its effort to find a solution with the pilotsโ€™ union that would avert or mitigate the layoffs before they take effect. UPS employs about 2,800 pilots.

If the furloughs go forward, they would be phased, with the first 170 pilots receiving notices in 2010. The initial group would be furloughed in May.
