Air China to start nonstop Beijing – Johannesburg service

Air China (Beijing) has announced itย will start Beijing – Johannesburg nonstop service on October 29, 2015 , which will be the first air link offered by a Chinese carrier between Mainland China and South Africa and also Air China’s first route to Africa.

The flights, CA867/8, Beijing – Johannesburg are to be operated on Tuesday/Thursday/Sunday (outbound) and on Monday/Wednesday/Friday (inbound). The outbound flight departs from Beijing at 23:15 Beijing time, and arrives in Johannesburg at 7:35 local time on the following day. The inbound flight departs from Johannesburg at 11:50 local time and arrives in Beijing at 7:30 Beijing time. The flights are to be operated with Boeing 777-300 ER, an aircraft type quite popular with the world’s business travelers.

This year, Air China will also start Beijing – Addis Ababa service.

Cathay Pacific flight CX884 to Los Angeles diverts to Shemya Island in the Aleutians with smoke in the aircraft

Cathay Pacific Airways (Hong Kong) flight CX884 has made a safe emergency landing on Shemya Island in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska after smoke was detected in the aircraft. The airline issued this statement:

Cathay Pacific is making special arrangements to help passengers affected by the precautionary diversion of flight CX884 to Shemya military airport in the Aleutians Island near Alaska get to their intended destination of Los Angeles.

Flight CX884 made a precautionary diversion at around 21.30 Hong Kong time on its way from Hong Kong to Los Angeles on July 29 when smoke was detected in the aircraft, a Boeing 777-300ER. There were 276 passengers and 18 crew on the flight.

The airline is mounting a relief flight, operating as CX884D, which departed from Hong Kong International Airport at 03.45 local time this morning and will form part of the effort to help those affected by the diversion of CX884 to fly to Los Angeles.

Cathay Pacific Director Service Delivery James Ginns said: “Safety is always our top priority at Cathay Pacific and the Captain of CX884 made exactly the right decision to divert the flight as a precautionary measure. We understand that this action resulted in a long and arduous journey for those onboard the diverted flight and we apologise for the inconvenience caused. We will launch a thorough investigation into what caused the smoke that was detected on the aircraft operating CX884.”

Flight CX884 was operated as a codeshare flight with American Airlines AA8937 and Lan LA6082.

Delta and China Eastern solidify their strategic partnership, Delta to acquire a 3.55% share

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) and China Eastern Airlines (Shanghai) today signed an agreement to expand their partnership and better connect Delta’s global network with China Eastern, one of the leading airlines in China. The agreement will include a $450 million investment by Delta to acquire a 3.55 percent stake in China Eastern.

This move marks a significant step in the airlines’ collaboration and partnership that will allow Delta and China Eastern to compete more effectively on routes between the U.S. and China, provide more travel options for customers in both countries and make joint investments in the customer experience.

“The execution of the Subscription Agreement and the launching of commercial cooperation plan by China Eastern and Delta indicate significant strategic moves of China Eastern to comprehensively reform further, actively explore and develop mixed ownership economy, and actively promote globalized development,” said Shaoyong Liu, China Eastern CEO. “The cooperation of the parties is based on a global vision and joint strategic blueprint. China Eastern, with its wholly owned subsidiary Shanghai Airlines, and Delta currently operate codeshare flights on 30 domestic routes in the U.S., 43 domestic routes in China and seven trans-Pacific routes between China and the U.S. China Eastern serves the three largest U.S. markets, with four nonstop flights from Shanghai and Delta serves the three largest cities in China with six daily non-stop flights from the U.S.

  • China Eastern and Delta continue to strengthen cooperation and support each other in the China-U.S. market through greater access to each other’s networks and an improved customer experience. Among recent improvements:
  • China Eastern and Delta have expanded their joint China-U.S. offering โ€“ further cementing their position in the largest market to/from Shanghai โ€“ with Delta’s recent addition of new Los Angeles to Shanghai service.
  • Delta’s recent move to Terminal 1 at Shanghai’s Pudong Airport to co-locate with China Eastern and Shanghai Airlines has resulted in more convenient connections and a seamless airport and baggage experience for customers.

Newly developed joint corporate sales provide more competitive products to customers in China and the U.S.

As part of the enhanced strategic partnership, China Eastern and Delta entered into a conditional subscription agreement where Delta will invest $450 million in China Eastern’s H-shares, which trade on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The investment equals approximately 10 percent of China Eastern H shares and [3.55] percent of the total shares of China Eastern. Delta also will be entitled to an observer seat on the China Eastern board of directors. The agreement is conditioned upon achievement of a final marketing agreement and approval by each carrier’s board of directors.

China Eastern in the U.S.

China Eastern will operate 35 weekly departures to 4 destinations in US from Shanghai, 2 flights a day to Los Angeles, daily to New York, San Francisco and Hawaii, also 3 flights a week from NanJing to Los Angeles. China Eastern operates Luxurious new 777-300ERs on routes between China and North America, which will be a major market for China Eastern over the future years. China Eastern plans to open new routes to North America and also boost frequencies on existing routes.

Delta in China

Delta will operate 28 weekly departures to Shanghai this summer. Delta also offers daily service to China’s capital, Beijing, from Seattle and Detroit and to Hong Kong from Seattle. Delta has grown its China network by nearly three times in the past five years.

Thai is dropping Los Angeles and Rome

Thai Airways International (Bangkok) is ending two long-haul routes per Airline Route. The flag carrier will drop the Bangkok (BKK) – Seoul (ICN) – Los Angeles route on October 25. The route is currently operated four days a week with Boeing 777-300 ERs. This means Thai will no longer serve the United States.

Thai is also ending the Bangkok – Rome (FCO) route on the same day.

Air China is coming to Newark starting on October 26

Air China (Beijing) will commence the nonstop Beijing – Newark route starting on October 26. The new route will be operated four days a week with Boeing 777-300 ERs per Airline Route.

Swiss unveils its new Boeing 777-300 ER cabin and routes, three Airbus A340-300s to go to Edelweiss

Swiss International Air Lines (Zurich)ย will usher-in a new era in the history of its long-haul aircraft fleet next January with the arrival of the first of its nine new Boeing 777-300 ERs. The new Swiss twinjets will seat 340 passengers, include three-classes of service, and offer wireless internet connectivity. The ‘Triple Sevens’ will be deployed on routes to and from the US west coast, South America, and Asia from the 2016 summer schedule onwards.

The new type will be initially introduced on the Zurich – New York (JFK) route on February 21, 2016 with four weekly flights. It will operate to JFK until March 25, 2016.

Zurich – Montreal (Trudeau) will follow on March 27, 2016, Zurich – Hong Kong on April 10, 2016 and Zurich – Los Angeles on June 9, 2016 per Airline Route.

The new aircraft will be deployed primarily on services to Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and Bangkok (staring on July 8, 2016). San Francisco (staring on September 1, 2016), Sรฃo Paulo (starting August 1, 2016) and Tel Aviv will also receive Boeing 777 service several times a week.

As a part of its ‘Next-Generation Airline of Switzerland’ strategy, Swiss will begin the renewal of its long-haul aircraft fleet in 2016. A total of nine new Boeing 777-300 ERs (Extended Range) will be gradually assimilated into the fleet from the beginning of next year. This will result in the creation of 360 new cabin crew jobs in the future.

In Swiss configuration, the Boeing 777-300 ER will offer 340 seats: eight in First Class, 62 in Business Class, and 270 in Economy. The redesigned cabin interior of the new Swiss flagship will provide comfort and aesthetics to meet the most discerning of demands in all three seating classes.

The Swiss First seat can be transformed into one’s own private suite and includes a 32-inch screen, the largest in the industry. Swiss First guests will also enjoy electrically-adjustable window blinds and their own personal wardrobe.

The Swiss Business seating (above) offers optimum privacy and freedom of movement, while the seat cushion’s firmness can be individually regulated. The seats can be easily converted into a lie-flat bed that reclines into more than six- feet long in length (@6’7″).

Swiss Economy customers can also look forward to a new air travel experience with new seat-cushion technology and further innovations that include a large personal touchscreen. In addition to the regular cabin service, all SWISS Economy guests will be able to make use of a self-service kiosk offering a wide range of drinks and snacks.

All nine Boeing 777-300 ERs will also feature wireless internet via a broadband connection, enabling passengers to surf or send emails on their laptop, tablet or smartphone device.

The first delivery of six of the new Boeing 777-300 ERs will replace six Swiss Airbus A340-300s that will be returned to the lessor. Between 2017 and 2018, Swiss will receive an additional three Boeing 777-300 ERs. These new aircraft will replace three other A340-300s which will enter the fleet of Swiss’ sister carrier Edelweiss.

Swiss International Air Lines is Switzerland’s national airline, serving 106 destinations in 49 countries from Zurich and Geneva and carrying over 16 million passengers a year with its 95-aircraft fleet.

Air China launches the third daily flight from Los Angeles to Beijing

Air China (Beijing) officials and China-bound passengers at Tom Bradley International Terminal welcomed the arrival of the inaugural flight of the airlineโ€™s third daily nonstop service from Beijing (flight CA 887) at 9 a.m. PDT yesterday (July 1). Chinaโ€™s national flag carrier is also celebrated the first day of the relocation of its airport operations from Terminal 2 to the Los Angeles International Airportโ€™s (LAX) bigger and newly renovated Tom Bradley International Terminal.

All of Air Chinaโ€™s three Los Angeles (LAX)-Beijing (PEK) daily nonstop services are operated by the ย Boeing 777-300 ER. Air China is the only airline with a nonstop service between these two cities.

Air China offers nonstop services to Beijing from its seven gateways in North America: Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Washington Dulles, Houston, Honolulu and Vancouver. In addition to Los Angeles, Air China is also the only airline with nonstop services to Beijing from New York and Houston. If offers double daily services from New Yorkโ€™s JFK International; daily services from Houston, Vancouver and San Francisco; four times weekly service from Washington Dulles and three times weekly from Honolulu to Beijing.

On September 29, 2015, Air China will launch the three times weekly nonstop service between Beijing and Montreal (Trudeau). It will be the first transpacific direct link between these two cities. The new Montreal service will bring Air Chinaโ€™s number of gateways in North America to a total of eight.

Thai and Boeing celebrate the 25th Boeing 777-300 ER direct delivery

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle and Charleston) and Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (Bangkok) celebrated the Thailand flag carrier’s 25th direct 777 delivery, a 777-300 ER (Extended Range) (HS-TKY), from the Boeing delivery center in Everett, Washington.

Thai has operated nearly every model of the 777 over the last two decades and also currently operates five 787 Dreamliners. Thai Cargo was the first carrier in Southeast Asia to utilize the 777 Freighter and in January the two companies celebrated the airline’s 75th direct delivery from Boeing.

 

The Bangkok-based airline has one additional 777-300 ER on order.

Virgin Australia upgrades its Boeing 777-300 Premium Economy cabin

Virgin Australia Airlines (Brisbane) has unveiled a major redesign of the Premium Economy cabin featured on board its Boeing 777-300 fleet, which will launch in November 2015.

According to the airline, the new Premium Economy cabin will feature:

An exclusive and intimate cabin size of 24 seats;
A seat pitch of 41 inches, with more legroom than any other Australian airline;
A plated meal service inspired by business class, tailored to the guest and accompanied by a selection of wines from our Business Class cellar;
A Premium Larder for self-service food and beverages for the exclusive use of Premium Economy guests;
Crew trained in Premium service; and
Dedicated check-in, Priority Boarding and Priority baggage (up to 64kg of baggage), enabling guests to speed through airport formalities.

Guests will be able to choose different variations of their meals, with different garnishes, along with the time and speed of service.
