Japan Airlines, British Airways and Finnair start their joint venture between Japan and Europe on April 1

Japan Airlines (JAL) (Tokyo) and fellow oneworld® alliance members British Airways (London) and Finnair (Helsinki) will start their planned joint business venture between Europe and Japan starting on April 1, 2014.

The joint business means that the three airlines will share revenue and cooperate on scheduling and pricing between Japan and Europe, providing customers with more flexible routing options and an attractive range of fares.

Last October, Japanese regulators gave approval to the airlines’ plans to include Finnair in the joint business established in 2012 by British Airways and Japan Airlines, and in February the three airlines began selling joint fares on select routes for travel after April 1.

The joint business opens up all three airlines’ networks between Japan and Europe and allows the airline partners to cooperate on expanding their presence in this growing and important market. The agreement also strengthens the oneworld alliance and enables it to compete more effectively around the world with other global alliances.

Currently, Finnair flies daily from Helsinki to Tokyo and daily in summer (five times per week in the winter) to Osaka and Nagoya, connecting Japan to more than 50 Finnair destinations in Europe. Japan Airlines also operates daily from Tokyo to Helsinki, Frankfurt, Paris and London, while British Airways operates daily flights (from April 9) from London to both Narita and Haneda airports in Tokyo.

Japan Airlines and JetBlue Airways to expand their codeshare agreement

Japan Airlines (JAL) (Tokyo) and JetBlue Airways (New York) have agreed to further expand their codeshare cooperation starting on March 30, 2014, resulting in an increase in the number of JAL codeshare flights available on U.S. domestic routes operated by JetBlue. Sales and reservations for the newest codeshare flights will be available from March 25, 2014.

JAL also recently announced the launch of double daily service on its Tokyo (Narita) – New York (JFK) route from March 30, 2014, with the new second daily operation from Narita scheduled to arrive at JFK in the early evening. To further improve the convenience for transit passengers at New York, the latest codeshare flights on JetBlue delivers same-day connections to multiple U.S. cities.

Additionally, JAL and JetBlue will increase the number of codeshare routes between Boston and select U.S. cities, and JAL will also introduce new codeshare flights between San Francisco and select U.S. cities to further enhance JAL’s overall U.S. network.

JAL initially launched its codeshare cooperation with JetBlue in April 2012 to strengthen JAL’s network throughout the U.S. East Coast. JetBlue, whose main hubs are at Boston (Logan) and New York (JFK), boasts a strong U.S. domestic network and is known for its service quality including leather seating, rich in-flight entertainment, and unlimited snacks and drinks.

The expanded codeshare cooperation with JetBlue is in addition to JAL’s extensive codeshare cooperation under joint business with oneworld® alliance partner, American Airlines. Together with American and JetBlue, JAL is continually striving to provide its customers with greater convenience through expanded network within the U.S.

JAL Group announces its flight and fleet plans for fiscal year 2014-2015

JAL Group (Japan Airlines) (Tokyo) has announced its flight frequency and fleet plans on both international and domestic routes for fiscal year 2014 (ending March 31, 2015):

In regards to the airline’s international network, with the addition of international flight slots at Tokyo (Haneda) Airport, JAL will begin operating new day-time nonstop flights from March 30, 2014, between Haneda and London, between Haneda and Paris, and between Haneda and Singapore as well as between Haneda and Bangkok. Additionally, the airline will use late night and early morning slots to launch new service between Haneda and Ho Chi Minh City. JAL will strive to improve customer accessibility and meet travel demand in overseas gateways to connect with domestic cities.

Meanwhile, at Tokyo (Narita) Airport, with expected growth of travel demand between North America and Asia, JAL will increase weekly round-trip flights from 7 to 14 between Narita and New York. Additionally, the airline will increase flights frequency from 3 to 4 round-trip flights weekly between Narita and Moscow to meet strong growth of business demand.

Furthermore, JAL plans to increase the number of available revamped aircraft (JAL SKY SUITE 777/767), and in particular, expand the availability of aircraft featuring JAL SKY WIDER in Economy Class. The airline has also decided to operate aircraft with fully-flat seats or shell flat seats in Business Class cabins on all medium and long haul routes to and from Southeast Asia and Honolulu by the early Second Half of FY2014 in order to further deliver improved service to customers.

In regards to the airline’s domestic network, JAL has decided to double flight frequency between Haneda and Yamagata, and the airline will also resume six domestic routes based on a thorough review of flight schedules and operations within the airline’s network so that customers will be able to connect more conveniently.

JAL announces route changes, frequency changes and fleet plans for FY2010

JAL-Japan Airlines (Tokyo-Haneda) has announced revisions affecting routes, flight frequencies and its fleet plan for the first half of fiscal year 2010, and decided on plans for the second half of the year ending on March 31, 2011.

JAL has restructured its overall network with the clear objective of returning to profitability as swiftly as possible by creating a solid business model that can withstand the fluctuations in economic conditions and by generating profits without overly relying on future traffic demand. This plan includes the retirement of the Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A300-600 aircraft by the end of this fiscal year, bold withdrawal from several overseas regions, and the drastic contraction in the size of operations. It is formulated to achieve within one year, substantial reductions in the airline’s fixed costs, a target which was initially planned to be accomplished over a period of 3 years.

The airline has decided to discontinue services on 15 international routes with 86 weekly roundtrip flights, as well as on 30 domestic routes with a maximum of 58* daily roundtrip flights. Totaling the changes made since fiscal year 2009, JAL will end operations on 28 international routes with the closure of 11 overseas bases while domestically, 50 routes will be terminated along with 8 offices. The international and domestic passenger capacity (measured in available seat kilometer) will as a result be reduced by 40% and 30% respectively compared to levels in fiscal year 2008.

*56 roundtrip flights if excluding seasonally-operated flights

JAL-Japan Airlines (Tokyo-Haneda) is seeking around $550 million from Delta Air Lines for a minority share in the Japanese carrier according to published reports. SkyTeam partners Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines may also buy a share. JAL desperately needs a capital infusion. Since it is part of the Oneworld Alliance it may also approach American Airlines to counter bid the Delta offer.
