The main sections of the first Airbus A380 for Japanโs All Nippon Airways (ANA) have arrived at the Airbus final assembly line in Toulouse, France via a special convoy, with six subassemblies โ the nose, central and aft fuselage sections, the tailplane, and the two wings.
ANA Holdings placed a firm order for three A380s in 2016, becoming the first customer for the superjumbo in Japan.ย The first delivery is scheduled early in 2019, and the A380 will initially be operated on the Tokyo-Honolulu route. ANAโs A380s will feature a special โHonuโ Hawaiian green sea turtle livery (below), symbolizing good luck and prosperity.
Today, 222 A380s are operated by 13 airlines on 60 destinations, and 240 airports around the world can accommodate the A380.
ANA made this announcement about the special A380 livery:

ANA, Japanโs largest airline, announced today it has selected โFLYING HONUโ as the theme for its limited edition livery to be used on the carrierโs Airbus A380, which will be introduced on the Tokyo-Honolulu service, launching in spring 2019. The new route marks ANAโs first introduction of the Airbus A380, the worldโs largest passenger airliner.
The aircraftโs final design was selected from among 2,197 submissions from around the world, which were received by ANA during an open design contest conducted from Oct. 7-Nov. 30, 2016. An in-house selection committee awarded the grand prize to Chihiro Masuoka of Tokyo, for his concept โSea Turtle Family,โ featuring the Hawaiian green sea turtleโa symbol of good luck and prosperity in Hawaii. Mr. Masuoka was awarded a pair of roundtrip business-class tickets for ANAโs Tokyo-Honolulu route. In addition to the design contestโs grand prize winner, four runners up, including the creators of the design โStephen+Caydenโ from the state of Hawaii, will receive commemorative gifts from ANA.

Known as โHonuโ in the Hawaiian language, the green sea turtle is considered a sacred creature, and is widely loved by the people of Hawaii. ANA selected โFLYING HONUโ as the nickname to call the special edition aircraft, with the hopes to pass on some of the happiness and luck to its passengers to Hawaii.
ANA Group will be supporting activities in Hawaii to protect the Hawaiian green sea turtle, which is listed by The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a wild animal in danger of extinction.
ANA is moving forward with preparations to offer new passenger services to coincide with the introduction of the A380, and will provide updates as they become available.

Airbus has made this announcement:

Following the previously announced changes to the A380 and A400M delivery plans, Airbus has confirmed the formal adjustment of production rates for its A380 and A400M programs. The new plan, which was presented to the European Works Council, involves the production of six A380s per year starting from 2020 and eight A400Ms per year, also as of 2020. Airbus is now entering into a formal social process with staff representatives at European and national levels to analyze potential implications for the Companyโs workforce and to start joint mitigation efforts.
At this stage, Airbus estimates the maximum impact of these measures will affect up to 3,700 positions at sites across the Companyโs home countries of France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain.
Airbus is committed to managing any implications for its workforce in a responsible manner โ as already successfully demonstrated on various occasions in the past.ย The Company is confident that it will be able to propose opportunities to most of the affected employees through programs which are ramping up. Each year, Airbus manages 12 percent mobility and can adapt the flexibility level across divisions, functions and subsidiaries to support redeployment of staff to other programโs activities.
The adjustment of the A380 production rate follows a recent order which provides visibility to the program for the years to come. As previously announced, at a baseline of 6 deliveries per year, Airbus can produce the A380 in an industrial efficient way over the coming years. This baseline allows Airbus to pursue further sales campaigns which may lead to higher production levels.
On the A400M program, production will be adjusted to eight units per year as of 2020, following production of fifteen A400M in 2018 and eleven units in 2019. This adjustment is based on discussions with the A400M Launch Customer Nations. Airbus pursues export opportunities beyond this level.
Airbus has to ensure the best possible production flow for its products. These rate adjustment decisions provide clear visibility for customers, the supply chain and employees over the coming years.
The company will provide further information on the progress of the discussions with the social partners, as required.

Airbus is presenting a development study for an enhanced A380, the โA380plusโ. The study includes aerodynamic improvements in particular new, large winglets and other wing refinements that allow for up to 4% fuel burn savings. Added to an optimised A380 maintenance programme and the enhanced cabin features first shown at Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in April, the overall benefit is a 13% cost per seat reduction versus todayโs A380.
John Leahy, Airbus COO Customers, explains: โThe A380plus is an efficient way to offer even better economics and improved operational performance at the same time.โ John adds: โIt is a new step for our iconic aircraft to best serve worldwide fast-growing traffic and the evolving needs of the A380 customers. The A380 is well-proven as the solution to increasing congestion at large airports, and in offering a unique, passenger-preferred experience. โ
The new winglets measure approximately 4,7 metres in height (an uplet of 3.5m, and a downlet of 1,2m). It is designed to improve aerodynamics and reduce drag.
The optimised cabin layout based on the โcabin enablersโ presented at Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX), allows up to 80 additional seats* with no compromise on comfort: redesigned stairs, a combined crew-rest compartment, sidewall stowage removal, a new 9-abreast seat configuration in premium economy and 11-abreast in economy.
The A380plus will have an increased maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 578 tonnes providing the flexibility of carrying up to 80 more passengers over todayโs range (8,200nm), or flying 300nm further.
The A380plus features longer maintenance check intervals, a reduced six-year check downtime, and systems improvements, which will reduce maintenance costs and increase aircraft availability.
The A380 is the worldโs largest, most spacious airliner that offers passengers the smoothest, quietest and most comfortable ride. With two full widebody decks, offering widest seats, wide aisles and more floor space, the A380 has the unique capability to generate revenue, stimulate traffic and attract the flying public, who can now specifically select the A380 when booking a flight via the iflyA380.com web site. Over 170 million passengers have already enjoyed the experience of flying on board an A380 today. Every two minutes, an A380 takes off or lands somewhere in the world.
497 passengers is the airlineโs average capacity of the A380s currently in operation today โ which are consistently attracting above-average passenger load factors. With all A380 cabin enablers, the A380 average seat count would move from 497 to 575 in four classes, and generate significantly more revenue for airlines.

Cabin enablers description
New Forward Stairs โ 20 more passengers (Business, Premium Economy & Economy Classes)
The NFS involves relocation of the forward stair from Door 1 to Door 2, and combining the entrance of the NFS to the upper deck (going up), with the adjacent staircase to the lower-deck crew-rest (going down). The NFS would make room for up to 20 additional passengers.
Combined Crew-Rest Compartment (CCRC) โ three more passengers (Premium Economy)
For the CCRC, the existing flight-crew-rest (behind the cockpit in the mezzanine area at Door 1) is moved down and combined with the cabin crew rest on the lower deck. This innovation frees space for three extra Premium-Economy passengers at the front of the main-deck.
11-abreast 3-5-3 economy layout on the main-deck โ 23 more passengers (Economy Class)
Thanks to an innovative seating concept developed by Airbus and its seating partners, Airbus is able to maintain an 18inch seat-width while offering airlines an 11-abreast Economy Class on the main-deck in a โ3-5-3โ configuration. This enables an increase in capacity of 23 seats โ adding significantly to the A380โs revenue-generating potential.
New Aft-Galley Stair Module (AGSM) โ 14 more passengers + two food trolleys
The AGSM involves the redesign of the rear-stair from a spiral configuration to a straight/square one. On the main-deck, this allows valuable storage volume for galley modules. Overall the AGSM provides space for 14 more revenue passengers plus two extra food trolleys.
Upper-deck sidewall stowage removal โ 10 more passengers (Business Class)
The option to remove the sidewall stowages on the upper-deck increases the wall-to-wall cabin width at foot-rest height โ which makes space for up to 10 more business class seats / beds when an angled herring-bone arrangement is used.
Nine-abreast Premium Economy on the main deck โ 11 more passengers (Premium Economy)
The A380โs generous main-deck cross section โ significantly wider than any other commercial airliner โ is allowing seat manufacturers to optimise their Premium Economy (PE) seat designs to create the industryโs most efficient and comfortable PE layout possible. This layout enables 11 more PE seats than in an eight-abreast layout.

Airbus is developing a full spectrum of new Cabin Enablers for customers of its flagship A380 airliner. The latest is the โNew Forward Stairsโ (NFS) option which was presented at the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg. Together these cabin enhancements will make this very efficient and comfortable airliner even better: Overall cabin optimisation is expected to result in the freeing-up more cabin floor space for around 80 additional passengers*. This would bring airlines significant additional revenues.
With this latest proposal of the NFS option, the package of new cabin enablers for the A380 now comprises the following:
New Forward Stairs โ 20 more passengers (Business, Premium Economy & Economy Classes)
