Allegiant goes to court to prevent a strike by its pilots

Allegiant Air (Las Vegas) and its relationship with its pilots, represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), seems to be getting worse. Yesterday afternoon the airline went to a local U.S. District Court in Las Vegas to block a threatened strike by its pilots. The unionized pilots see a strike as their last resort in the stalled contract talks that are headed towards arbitration.

The company issued this statement:

Allegiant Air has received a court order, pilots will resume flying.

A court in Las Vegas has issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) against International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 1224, which represents the Allegiant pilots.

Allegiant has every reason to believe that the Teamsters will honor the court’s instructions and will not be able to continue with their illegal intention to strike. This order will prevent a threatened pilots’ strike which would have left potentially thousands of travelers with cancelled flights over the Easter holiday weekend. Based on this, all scheduled Allegiant flights are expected to operate normally.

With the threat of an imminent strike over, Allegiant hopes that both parties can now focus on the next federally mediated negotiating session, scheduled for late April.

Previously before Allegiant went to court to get a restraining order, the pilot union issued this statement yesterday:

Veteran pilots at Allegiant Air, the country’s most profitable airline, announced this morning (April 1) that they will not be flying regularly scheduled routes on Thursday, April 2 from the airline’s major hubs across the country, including Orlando, Phoenix, Tampa and Las Vegas. The strike comes as Allegiant refuses to reestablish a prior scheduling system and restore other basic benefits that have been illegally rolled back over a two-year period during which the company has posted record-level profits. In January, 98 percent of the company’s pilots, including those on reserve duty, voted to authorize a strike.

“Striking is a last resort, but we cannot continue to stand by a company that flaunts the law by robbing the pilots of legally protected rights and benefits. The company has to restore the status quo that it illegally took from us,” said Tom Pozdro, a pilot based in Las Vegas. “We deeply regret the inconvenience to our passengers and other work groups and encourage them to call Allegiant, asking them to do what is right by honoring its commitment to its pilots and the public by restoring our basic, legally regarded standards, protections and benefits.”

The strike has the potential to ground more than 250 flights from taking off Thursday, impacting over 33,000 customers, including thousands headed to Las Vegas for March Madness Final Four events, Spring Break travelers and others. On Monday, pilots posted an open letter to Allegiant customers alerting them to concerns at the airline, including operational problems that lead to the delays and cancellations that have made Allegiant one of the least popular airlines in the travel industry.

Allegiant Air is the most profitable commercial airline in the U.S. with 48 consecutive profitable quarters. Its executives are among the highest compensated in the industry, with the company CEO – and largest shareholder – taking home tens of millions in shareholder returns in recent years.

“Allegiant is making millions in profits, yet executives refuse to invest in the company’s infrastructure, operations and workforce. The haphazard scheduling system is creating exhaustion and stress for pilots,” said Tom Cox, a pilot based out of Phoenix who has been with Allegiant for over five years. “Pilots at Allegiant want to put our company on the right track for long-term success, and that means reinvesting in its workforce and planes. They can start with complying with the law by reinstating the legally protected work rules and benefits they took from us.”

Icelandair to operate two Boeing 767-300s, Air Iceland to become a new Bombardier Q400 operator

Icelandair Group (Icelandair and Air Iceland) (Reykjavik) has announced Icelandair will operate two Boeing 767-300s. The Group has also announced plans to replace Air Iceland’s aging Fokker 50 fleet with newer Bombardier DHC-8-402 (Q400) aircraft. The Group issued this statement:

The Board of Directors of Icelandair Group has decided to update the fleet policies of the subsidiaries Icelandair and Air Iceland.

All five Fokker 50 aircraft that Air Iceland operates will be sold and three Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 will replace it. After that Air Iceland will operate five aircraft, three Bombardier Q400 and two Q200. The Q400 aircraft can seat 74 passengers while the Fokker 50 takes 50 passengers.

The airline’s operations will be simplified and optimised as number of aircraft decrease and synergies will increase as all aircraft will be from the same manufacturer. As the Q400 is faster and has a longer range,

Air Iceland sees opportunities in new markets. The company will be better equipped to service the domestic market as the aircraft are larger and travel time will be shorter. The airline aims to increase the number of foreign tourists on board its aircraft going forward.

In 2015 Icelandair will operate 23 Boeing 757-200 that take 183 passengers and one 757-300 that takes 220 passengers. The company owns 22 of those aircraft and leases two that will be redelivered this autumn.

It has been decided that they will be replaced with two Boeing 767-300 aircraft that take 260 passengers that will be added to the route network as of the spring of 2016. Larger aircraft are more feasible due to high load factors on many routes all year round and limited number of landing slots on certain airports. The increase of the fleet in the last few years has made it more economical to have more than one size of aircraft in the fleet. The Boeing 767 aircraft is similar to the 757 in terms of maintenance and crew training and the airline has experience in operating that type.

Icelandair Group’s subsidiary, Loftleidir Icelandic, has operated 767 aircraft in leasing projects that have been maintained by Icelandair. The aircraft has longer range than the 757 which will create new opportunities for the route network.

It has not been decided whether the new aircraft will be purchased or leased.

Bjorgolfur Johannsson, President and CEO of Icelandair Group: “Operating one type of aircraft has been very economical for Icelandair but when the route network and the fleet reaches a certain size it becomes more feasible to have a broader range of aircraft in the fleet. High load factors all year round and limited number of landing slots on certain airports also support this decision. In terms of Air Iceland a simpler and more economical fleet will make the operations better as crew training will be simpler.

We foresee further growth opportunities in the coming years with these changes to the fleet policy for passenger aircraft. Both the Boeing 767 and Q400 aircraft can service markets that the current fleet cannot, which will enable us to go into new markets and connect them to the current route network.”

Branson AirExpress expands its route map in cooperation with Orange Air

Branson AirExpress (Branson, Missouri) has announced on social media it is expanding its relationship with Orange Air (Sanford) and their McDonnell Douglas DC-9-83 (MD-83) aircraft (above). The company is introducing four new routes on May 1, flown by Orange Air (all operated three days a week): Branson-Cincinnati, Branson-New Orleans, New Orleans-Cancun and Sanford (near Orlando)-Cancun.

Allegiant Air (Las Vegas) has announced new, nonstop jet service on 22 routes, including a new destination in the Allegiant network — Savannah-Hilton Head, Georgia.

Over the years, Allegiant has carried over 43 million passengers, and the company continues to grow, offering more nonstop service in more communities. In 2014, Allegiant announced service in six new cities and added 25 new routes to its network, at a time when many airlines are consolidating and cutting service. The company recently announced its 48th consecutive quarter of profitable operation while keeping its average one-way fare under $100.

Allegiant Travel Company also announced that it has entered into an agreement to purchase two additional A320 aircraft. The aircraft are currently being operated by Philippine Airlines (Philippines) and are scheduled to enter the Allegiant operating fleet toward the end of 2015.

Including the two A319s that deliver in 2015, which were announced on February 23, the company now expects 2015 CAPEX to be approximately $230 million.

Allegiant launches the Austin-Sanford route, arrives in Jacksonville

Allegiant Air (Las Vegas) yesterday (February 13) celebrated its inaugural flight to Orlando area from Austin, Texas.

Since beginning flights from Austin to Las Vegas in November 2013, Allegiant has flown over 40,000 Austin travelers to Las Vegas and back.

The new flights will operate twice weekly between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB).

Allegiant Air began new service from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (KAUS) to Orlando-Sanford International Airport (KSFB) on Friday morning, February 13. The airline is the first one to provide service to Sanford International Airport from Austin. At the present, there will be two flights per week. On Mondays, the flight is scheduled to depart Austin at 10:00 AM arriving in Orlando at 1:40 PM. The returning flight departs at 7:45 AM and arrives in Austin at 9:20 AM. On Fridays, the flight to Orlando-Sanford will depart at 7:00 PM arriving at 10:40 PM. Return flights will depart Orlando-Sanford at 4:45 PM arriving in Austin at 6:20 PM. This is the carriers second destination from Austin Texas. Allegiant Air began Austin to Las Vegas flights in 2013.

The inaugural flight celebrations included a live band, plenty of cake, and gifts for all the passengers. Several key officials also helped in the ribbon cutting ceremonies at the terminal before boarding the plane. “More service to a populated area such as Orlando, is great news for Central Texas, giving more choices for passengers to fly to Austin”, said Jim Smith, Director of Austin-Bergsrtrom International Airport. “Allegiant has been successful from day one in Austin achieving good customer response on its route to Las Vegas”.

Allegiant Air was founded in 1997 under the name WestJet Express in Fresno, California and is now based in Nevada. The airline currently operates McDonnell Douglas MD-80, Boeing 757-200, and Airbus A319/A320 airliners. With well over 90 destinations as of 2014, Allegiant primarilly serves leisure travelers with flights to warmer destinations such as Las Vegas, Orlando, and Phoenix. It also has private charter operations.

Orlando-Sanford International Airport is located within a short drive north of the downtown area. The airport is dedicated more toward vacationing public and British / European charter airlines and is considered a good alternative to the larger Orlando International Airport. Orlando Florida is a famous world wide resort destination with a number of large theme parks, shopping areas, restaurants, and attractions for all ages to enjoy.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is the airport of choice for all of Central Texas. With over 10.7 million passengers in 2014, the airport continues to grow and provide more flight options. Apart from the new Allegiant route to Orlando, new destinations are coming soon such as Air Canada to Toronto in May, American Airlines to Miami in March, Frontier Airlines to Atlanta in March, Branson Air Express to Branson Missouri in May, and Southwest Airlines to Saint Louis Missouri and Santa Ana (Orange County) California in June.

In other news, the company also launched twice-weekly service yesterday from Richmond, Virginia to St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport in the Tampa Bay area.

Additionally the ultra low-fare airline also started twice-weekly Syracuse, New York-Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood  flights yesterday.

On Thursday, February 12, the company has commenced its first service to Jacksonville, Florida from Cincinnati and from Pittsburgh on the next day.

Allegiant Air to add four more Airbus A320s

Allegiant Travel Company (Allegiant Air) (Las Vegas) has announced that it has entered into an agreement to purchase four additional Airbus A320 aircraft. The aircraft are currently being operated in Europe and are scheduled to enter the Allegiant operating fleet in 2017.

The airline continued:

“We are active in the used Airbus A320 market and will engage in transactions that make economic sense for the company,” said Jude Bricker, Senior Vice President of Planning. “These aircraft will help us maintain our desired growth rate into 2017 and provide us with additional high quality A320 aircraft. It is also another demonstration of our ability to grow the fleet while still providing returns to shareholders such as our recently announced $0.25 per share recurring quarterly cash dividend and the $86 million remaining in our share repurchase authority,” concluded Bricker.

These aircraft are expected to begin service in the second half of 2017. The purchase of the aircraft will take place upon delivery in 2017 and will not impact 2015 CAPEX, which is still expected to be $175 to $185 million.

Allegiant finds an underserved niche at Cincinnati, increases flights to Florida

Allegiant Air (Las Vegas) is finding a new underserved niche at Cincinnati. The carrier has announced further expansion from CVG with increased flights to Florida. Beginning in May 2015, existing services to Sanford (near Orlando) and Punta Gorda (Southwest Florida) will be doubled. The additions will replace recent reductions made by other carriers to these two markets, providing local travelers continued convenient flight options for Florida vacation travel.

Allegiant began service to Cincinnati in February 2014 with four weekly flights. By summer of 2015, Allegiant will offer 34 weekly departures during peak travel periods, including recently announced flights to Jacksonville, Florida and seasonal service to Myrtle Beach. The airline just launched flights from CVG to Las Vegas.

Starting in May 2015, Allegiant will increase its service from Cincinnati -Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) to Sanford to nine times weekly via Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB). Flights to Southwest Florida via Punta Gorda Airport (PGD) will increase to eight times weekly.
