Hawaiian Airlines to resume American Samoa service

"Hรดkรป Mau"

Hawaiian Airlines is reconnecting Honolulu (HNL) and American Samoa (PPG) by resuming nonstop flights between Hawaiโ€˜i and the U.S. Territory next week. Hawaiian, which suspended its twice-weekly HNL-PPG service at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, will be offering two flights per month starting on Monday through Dec. 20.

Hawaiian Airlines Airbus A330

Hawaiian, which provides the only regularly scheduled airย linkย between the two island chains, paused flights for 17 monthsย at the request of the American Samoa government. On Jan. 13, Hawaiian began operating a series ofย repatriation flightsย to bring to American Samoa thousands of residents who had been stranded away from home in Hawaiโ€˜i, the U.S. mainland and beyond.

Travelers to American Samoa must follow a series of government health and safety protocols, including proof of vaccination and negative pre-travel test results. More details are available at theย TALOFApassย website. Guests flying to Hawaiโ€˜i are required to create a state of Hawaiโ€˜iย Safe Travelsย account and upload their vaccination card or negative pre-travel test to avoid quarantine upon arrival.

Hawaiian will continue to operate the route with its 278-seat, wide-body Airbus A330 aircraft.

Hawaiian’s new “Travel Pono” travel-responsibly in-flight video

Hawaiian Airlines is encouraging responsible travel to and around the Hawaiian islands with this new in-flight “Travel Pono” video:

From Hawaiian Airlines:

Hawaiian Airlines is furthering its commitment to educate guests arriving in Hawaiโ€˜i on how to safely and responsibly enjoy the islands by debuting a new in-flight video. Theย five-minute Travel Pono spot, which begins airing next week in the cabins of Hawaiianโ€™s transpacific aircraft, features five Hawaiian Airlines crewmembers โ€“ including a firefighter, volunteers for search and rescue operations and marine mammal protection, and a cultural practitioner โ€“ who share expert advice on ocean and hiking safety, conservation of endangered species and the environment, and cultural and community best practices.

โ€œWeโ€™ve served as Hawaiโ€˜iโ€™s hometown carrier for over nine decades, and as residents of this special place, we are proud to welcome our guests with valuable information that will enrich their experience on the islands while helping protect Hawaiโ€™iโ€™s natural resources and our way of life,โ€ said Avi Mannis, senior vice president of marketing at Hawaiian Airlines. โ€œOver the last month we have heard from our community and employees calling for a video like this, and we listened.โ€

The Travel Pono video will show prior to landing on the in-flight entertainment system of Hawaiianโ€™s wide-body Airbus A330 and via the wireless streaming function for personal devices on the narrow-body Airbus A321neo.

The in-flight spot is an extension of Hawaiianโ€™s Travel Pono program, which the carrier introduced last fall to encourage responsible tourism as Hawaiโ€˜i welcomed back visitors through its Safe Travels program. The program has since equipped thousands of guests with tips on how to experience Hawaiโ€™i safely and respectfully, shared via Hawaiianโ€™s pre-trip emails,ย website,ย Manaสปo blog, and social media channels.

In addition to the new Travel Pono video, Hawaiianโ€™s guests will continue to have access to a library of informative content, produced by the carrierโ€™s local partners and ranging from ocean safety to cultural education. In April 2019, Hawaiian partnered with the state of Hawaiสปi Department of Land and Natural Resources on educational public service announcements focused on caring for the islandsโ€™ natural resources, and this month added videos created by the Hawaiสปi Tourism Authority for itsย popular Mฤlama Hawaiสปi campaign.

Hawaiian Airlines’ commitment to protecting Hawaiสปiโ€™s environment, culture and community remains steadfast. In July 2021, the carrier released itsย Corporate Kuleana Report, which details the carrierโ€™s progress on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives during the most challenging period in its 92-year history due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

How American Airlines Supported Operation Allies Refuge

American Airlines issued this report and photos:

It was a meaningful assignment: Fly hundreds of American troops home from service in Afghanistan on the weekend the nation remembered the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11.

Since the U.S. Department of Defense activated the Civil Reserve Air Fleet on Aug. 22, American Airlines has operated more than 25 flights as part of the program, aiding in the effort to bring thousands of evacuees to the U.S. from Afghanistan. On Sept. 13, at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), one of the airlineโ€™s concluding flights served to welcome U.S. service members home from their tours of duty in the Middle East.

Images capture Americanโ€™s participation in Operation Allies Refuge in recent weeks, including how the airline honored the service and sacrifice of hundreds of American heroes as they made their way home.

Maintaining the mission

Team members from around the system came together to support Americanโ€™s Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) activation these past few weeks. Throughout our airline, so many aviation professionals have raised their hands to help, including our Technical Operations team. So often behind the scenes, this group is charged with maintaining the safety of every aircraft in the air and keeping our airline moving. The same is the case for our CRAF flights. But there are differences, and our Tech Ops team has stepped up in a big way to ensure the safety and success of every mission.

In the air and on the ground

In addition to a full inspection before departure, each aircraft leaving the U.S. to begin a mission has two or more JFK- or PHL-based aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs) on board should any maintenance-related needs arise. Itโ€™s a voluntary position and one for which the team has overwhelmingly raised their hands to support. โ€œSeeing everyone else doing their part, I wanted to do my part of it, too,โ€ said JFK-based AMT Philip Chu who recently returned from a mission.

Our U.S.-based AMTs also team up with our Frankfurt, Germany (FRA)-based AMTs who have been traveling to the various military bases where our missions depart from to provide on-the-ground support, including completing full inspections prior to the flight, supporting fueling operations and loading evacueesโ€™ luggage and personal belongings.

โ€œWorking with our Frankfurt team, we completed a maintenance check of the aircraft before it departed the military base,โ€ said JFK-based AMT Neftaly Bayon, who quickly volunteered to be part of these missions. โ€œWhen I was doing a walkaround of the aircraft, I saw a little girl who reminded me of my daughters when they were young. She was so happy, waving to everyone. I would do it again.โ€

Back at home

Supporting these missions and deploying our Tech Ops resources starts with the team behind the team. Our Maintenance Operations Control (MOC), Routing and Supply Chain teams have been working around the clock to prepare and position aircraft and resources and coordinate with departments across the airline who are supporting these important flights.

So many have stepped up in a big way, including engineers who have created protocols and authorizations for configuring aircraft, and maintenance control technicians who organize any maintenance needed to prepare the aircraft.

The MOC team manages the fleet and the maintenance side of the operation and coordinates across the airline to supply maintenance support โ€” that work involves more moving pieces for the CRAF flights. โ€œThe CRAF missions are dynamic. Thatโ€™s why our MOC team mans the IOC Command Center around the clock, continuing to coordinate with the other departments to manage any obstacles, which may present themselves,โ€ said John Richter, Senior Manager of MOC.

The Materials, Supply and Aircraft on Ground (AOG) teams worked to ensure these missions had the proper materials to keep moving seamlessly. Weโ€™re flying to new destinations where we donโ€™t have our usual support โ€” be it parts, tools or people โ€” which is why itโ€™s critical that each aircraft is loaded with a fly away kit. They contain all the necessary tools and parts to address any issues with an aircraft. โ€œThe entire Supply Chain organization really stepped up to support our passengers and crew by ensuring the safety and dependability of every flight,โ€ said Matt Flock, Senior Manager of Planning.
