Later on November 29 China Eastern issued this statement:

China Eastern Airlines has received its first of 20 A350-900 airplanes at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. Equipped with China Eastern’s latest passenger service system, this new generation flagship model promises to redefine intercontinental air travel with its advanced capabilities.

The introduction of the new airplane, which is more spacious, greener and quieter than previous models, is part of efforts by the Shanghai-based airlines to meet the diversified demand for a high quality travel experience in the air.

The cabin of China Eastern’s first A350-900 is divided into three parts — a business class section with 40 seats, including four premium business seats, a super economy class area with 32 seats, and 216 economy class seats.

In response to passengers’ diversified expectations for travel, the new plane also comes with an “Air Living Room”, its premium business class option which features new seats, the largest in-flight touchscreen in the airline, a next generation in-flight entertainment system, a full function bar, optimized cabin scene lightening, NFC (near field communication) reader for in-flight shopping, world premiere bluetooth earphone module, and high-throughput open spaces intersect.

The balcony-styled business class, the first of its kind, is equipped with a host of amenities, including Thompson Vantage’s first “super business” products, 32-inch high definition touchscreens that are far larger than regular first-class allocations, mini-bars, convenient storage lockers, AC power outlets, and more comfortable three-point seatbelts.

The two premium business class seats in the middle row are also foldable, allowing flight crew to reshape the space into a community area that up to four people can comfortably use for a business meeting or family gathering.

Similar to the premium business cabin, the standard business cabin is equipped with Thompson Vantage XL all-flat seats, 18-inch high definition displays, and sliding doors that allow for more privacy.

Super economy and economy class travelers will find their trip in the China Eastern A350-900 jets to be more comfortable thanks to the new stylish seats from Rockwell Collins. The 12-inch high definition display installed on each seat in economy class — it is the largest across all airlines in the world — provides passengers with a top quality viewing experience.

Over in super economy class, each cradle-shaped seat is equipped with a 13-inch high definition display, independent AC and USB power outlets, leather seat covers, and a larger than normal table plate, all of which help accentuate the level of comfort.

Passengers can also look forward to more diversified media and entertainment content with China Eastern’s latest generation in-flight entertainment system, the Panasonic EX3/GCS, which is an all-round upgrade of the previous generation.

Like all wide-body aircraft in China Eastern’s fleet, the new A350-900 is also equipped with the new generation in-flight Wi-Fi which has a maximum speed of 200Mbps.

China Eastern’s “Kitchen in Air”, which comprises new microwaves, coffee machines and multi-functional fridges will also ensure that the cabin crew are always ready to meet the requests of each and every guest.

China Eastern currently operates the world’s second largest and Asia’s largest Airbus fleet which comprises nearly 700 aircraft, including more than 360 Airbus jets. The company will receive two more A350-900 aircraft this year, with the last of the 20 aircrafts ordered scheduled to be delivered in 2022. All these new planes will be equipped with the next generation cabin service system.

The first A350-900 will launch its maiden flight from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport to Beijing Capital International Airport on December 4, 2018. The plane will gradually be used to fly routes to other major destinations including Guangzhou of Guangdong province and Chengdu of Sichuanprovince. Its international long-haul routes from Shanghai to Europe, Australia and North America will begin in January, 2019.

Boeing statement on Lion Air flight 610 preliminary report

Delivered August 13, 2018, crashed into the Java Sea on October 29, 2018

Boeing issued this statement after the Indonesian government issued its preliminary report on the tragic crash of Lion Air flight 610 in the Java Sea:

The Boeing Company is deeply saddened by the loss of Lion Air Flight 610. We extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the families and loved ones of those onboard.

Safety is a core value for everyone at Boeing and the safety of our airplanes, our customersโ€™ passengers and their crews is always our top priority. As our customers and their passengers continue to fly the 737 MAX to hundreds of destinations around the world every day, they have our assurance that the 737 MAX is as safe as any airplane that has ever flown the skies.

Boeing appreciates Indonesiaโ€™s National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC) for its ongoing efforts to investigate the causes of the accident. Boeing is taking every measure to fully understand all aspects of this accident, working closely with the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board as technical advisors to support the NTSC as the investigation continues.

Earlier today, the NTSC released its preliminary accident investigation report.ย  The report provides detailed accounts of Flight 610 and of the immediately preceding flight of the same aircraft.

The report explains that the maintenance logs for the accident aircraft recorded problems related to airspeed and altitude on each of the four flights that occurred over the three days prior to Flight 610. The logs indicate that various maintenance procedures were performed, but issues related to airspeed and altitude continued on each successive flight. The logs indicate that, among other procedures, on Oct. 27, two days prior to the incident flight, one of the airplaneโ€™s Angle of Attack (AOA) sensors was replaced.

On Oct. 28, before the flight immediately prior to Flight 610, the pilot in command and the maintenance engineer discussed the maintenance that had been performed on the aircraft. The engineer informed the pilot that the AOA sensor had been replaced and tested. The report does not include records as to the installation or calibration of the new sensor, nor does the report indicate whether the sensor was new or refurbished.ย  Although the report states that the pilot was satisfied by the information relayed by the engineer that the AOA sensor had been replaced and tested, on the subsequent flight the pilots again experienced problems with erroneous airspeed data, and also experienced automatic nose down trim.

The report states that the flight crew of the Oct. 28 flight turned off the stabilizer trim switches within minutes of experiencing the automatic nose down trim, and continued with manual trim through the end of the flight. The report further notes that the pilot performed three non-normal checklist procedures, including the runaway stabilizer non-normal checklist, which is a memory item prescribed by the 737 MAX Flight Crew Operations Manual, and reaffirmed in Boeing Flight Crew Operations Manual Bulletin TBC-19 and FAA Emergency Airworthiness Directive (AD) Number 2018-23-51, as the appropriate procedure to address unintended horizontal stabilizer movement, regardless of source.

The report indicates that the remainder of the Oct. 28 flight was uneventful and that the flight continued to its destination. The report also states that, after landing, the pilot reported some of the experienced issues both on the aircraft maintenance log and to engineering. The report states that the pilot ran the runaway stabilizer non-normal check list, but it does not state that he communicated that fact in the maintenance documentation following that flight.

The following day, Oct. 29, shortly after taking off, the pilots experienced issues with altitude and airspeed data that the pilots had previously experienced on the earlier flights, due to erroneous AOA data. Data from the flight data recorder summarized in the report also makes clear that, as on the previous flight, the airplane experienced automatic nose down trim. In response, the flight crew repeatedly commanded nose up trim. This sequence repeated for the remainder of the flight, during which the flight crew was able to maintain control of the airplane for approximately ten minutes. Unlike as is stated with respect to the prior flight, the report does not state whether the pilots performed the runaway stabilizer procedure or cut out the stabilizer trim switches.

In accordance with international protocol, all inquiries about the ongoing accident investigation must be directed to the NTSC.

Hawaiian Airlines Airbus A330-243 N390HA (msn 1389) JFK (Fred Freketic). Image: 944577.

Hawaiian Airlines and JetBlue today announced an expanded codeshare agreement that allows travelers from dozens of cities, most of them in the eastern U.S., to easily connect to the Hawaiian Islands via Boston’s Logan International Airport (BOS) starting in April.

Boston-area JetBlue customers can now purchase tickets on Hawaiian Airlines’ nonstop flight to Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) with JetBlue’s ‘B6’ code and earn TrueBlue points when they fly.

Additionally, travelers originating in 26 cities โ€“ including Washington, DC (DCA), Pittsburgh (PIT), Philadelphia (PHL), Baltimore (BWI) and Cleveland (CLE), which currently cannot connect to Hawai’i through JetBlue in New York ย โ€“ can already purchase codeshare tickets that carry Hawaiian’s ‘HA’ code on their JetBlue flights that connect in Boston, and JetBlue’s ‘B6’ code on Hawaiian’s new nonstop flight between Logan and Honolulu. And they can use the ‘B6’ code on convenient Hawaiian flights that connect Honolulu to the entire island chain. ย Hawaiian and JetBlue’s guests also will continue to enjoy one-stop check-in and baggage transfers to their final destination, as well as the opportunity to earn and redeem loyalty rewards.

Hawaiian and JetBlue also offer their loyal members the opportunity to earn and redeem points or miles for travel on either carrier. HawaiianMiles members can earn miles on JetBlue-operated flights, whileย  TrueBlue members can accrue points on Hawaiian-operated flights. Similarly, frequent fliers can redeem their points or miles for travel on either carrier’s network, creating a long list of destinations for each program’s loyal members.

JetBlue flights connecting to and from Boston that are covered by the codeshare agreement are available at the following airports: Atlanta (ATL), Baltimore, Buffalo (BUF), Charlotte (CLT), Charleston(CHS), Chicago (ORD), Cleveland, Detroit (DTW), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Fort Myers (RSW), Jacksonville(JAX), Minneapolis (MSP), Nashville (BNA), New York (LGA and JFK), Newark (EWR), Orlando (MCO), Palm Beach (PBI), Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Raleigh-Durham (RDU), Savannah (SAV), Syracuse (SYR), Tampa (TPA) ย and Washington, DC both (DCA) and (IAD).

Hawaiian Airlines will begin its five-day-a-week service to Boston on April 4, 2019. Boston is the largest U.S. market without nonstop service to Hawai’i with nearly 500 people flying between eastern New England and the Islands on any given day.

In commemoration of Hawaiian Airlines’ 90th ย year of operation, the flight to Boston will be numbered Flight HA90. Starting with the inaugural flight on April 4, HA90 will depart HNL every day but Tuesday and Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. and arrive at BOS the following morning at 6 a.m. Flight HA89ย will depart BOS every day but Wednesday and Thursday at 8:55 a.m., except for Friday flights, which will depart at 8 a.m. The flights will arrive in Hawai’i the same day at 2:35 p.m. and the Friday flight will arrive at 1:40 p.m. Both HNL arrival times offer guests ample time to settle into their accommodations and unwind with a Hawaiian sunset, or connect to Kaua’i, Maui or the Island of Hawai’i via the airline’s convenient schedule of some 170 daily interisland flights, all of which will have the JetBlue codeshare.

At 5,095 miles, Hawaiian’s BOS-HNL route becomes the longest regularly scheduled route in the U.S. Guests traveling from the East Coast to Hawai’i will enjoy the roominess and superior comfort of Hawaiian’s 278-seat Airbus A330 widebody aircraft. Incorporating flowing curves evocative of the winds and the ocean, Hawaiian’s spacious first-class cabin features 18 lie-flat leather seats that transform into 180-degree beds at a roomy 20.5 inches wide and 76 inches long. Aligned in a 2-2-2 configuration, the seats are ideally tailored to leisure guests such as couples, families and honeymooners, while offering functionality to the business traveler.ย  Hawaiian also recently expanded to 68 from 40 the number of Extra Comfort main cabin seats, which offer a generous 36-inch pitch for extra leg room and priority boarding. Guests can upgrade to Extra Comfort seats for $145 each way.

Hawaiian’s Executive Chef Lee Anne Wong, owner of Honolulu’s Koko Head Cafรฉ, collaborates with Hawai’i’s top chefs to delight guests with two meals served in each direction.

In Boston, JetBlue will soon offer flights to more than 70 nonstop destinations โ€“ many more than any other airline โ€“ and is the leader in the number of customers carried and total daily departures. JetBlue also servesย Bostonย with premium Mint flights to a half-dozen destinations. With Mint, JetBlue re-imagined “business class” service offered by legacy carriers with lie-flat seating, curated food and amenities, and hospitality-trained inflight crewmembers โ€“ offered at an affordable price. JetBlue is on track to reach 200 daily departures at Logan in the coming years.
