Delta makes changes to its SkyMiles program

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) has announced these changes to its SkyMiles program:

Delta Air Lines is updating the SkyMiles program with several changes to improve the program as members earn status and redeem miles for Award tickets. Beginning March 9, SkyMiles members will have access to a number of program improvements, including lower One-Way Awards, improved tools for Delta customers to book Award travel, and the ability to earn Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) on partner airlines.

“We continue to adjust the SkyMiles program to give members more value and options, including making it easier to redeem more Award travel at lower prices,” said Karen Zachary, Managing Director – SkyMiles. “Delta is committed to providing industry-leading operational performance and on-board product and services, while remaining innovative in meeting our customers’ needs.”

Details of the changes to Delta’s SkyMiles program include:

New One-Way Award tickets beginning as low as 10,000 miles plus taxes and fees, available through Dec. 31, 2015 for travel in select U.S., Mexican and Caribbean markets. Customers can now fly to several popular Award destinations with a 21-day minimum advance purchase.
Improved Award redemption by expanding the number of airline partners that SkyMiles members can select to redeem for Award Travel on delta.com. Delta recently updated the Fly Delta app to give customers the ability to book Award travel from mobile devices. Since January, Delta has offer customers the ability to book SkyMiles Award travel through the Fly Delta app.
Customers can now earn MQDs, regardless of ticketing carrier, for travel on most of Delta’s airline partners, which will help them achieve Medallion status faster. SkyMiles members will receive retroactive credit of MQDs on eligible partner flights dating back to the beginning of the qualification year, Jan. 1, 2015. MQD earning varies based on carrier, percentage of distance flown as determined by Delta and fare class paid.

Additionally, this month, Delta launched refreshed cabin experiences with its Delta One, First Class, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin products. As part of these changes, SkyMiles Diamond Medallion members are now among the first board the aircraft along with Delta One/First Class customers. Diamond and Platinum Medallion members also enjoy complimentary upgrade eligibility to First Class as well as complimentary access to Delta Comfort+ seats at the time of booking. Gold and Silver Medallion members continue to enjoy complimentary upgrade eligibility to First Class and will now enjoy complimentary access to Delta Comfort+ seats starting 72 hours and 24 hours prior to departure.

Since January, Delta has made 50 percent more Award Seats available giving members more options when they travel. In 2014, program members redeemed more than 296 billion miles in the SkyMiles program for 12.5 million award redemptions.

WestJet announces Boeing 767-300 flights between Calgary and Honolulu, Calgary and Maui and Edmonton and Maui

WestJet (Calgary) today announced flights between Alberta and Hawaii beginning in December are available for booking on its newly-acquired Boeing 767 wide-body aircraft. The 767, the first in the WestJet fleet, will operate between Calgary and Honolulu, Calgary and Maui and between Edmonton and Maui.

The 767s are configured with 24 seats in Plus, offering wider seats with more recline in a 2-2-2 configuration, meaning each set of two seats is separated by an aisle. There are 238 seats in the main cabin, and all seats have access to power for personal electronic devices such as tablets or phones.

“These aircraft will be redeployed in summer 2016 to new and exciting international destinations that will be announced later this year,” concluded Chris Avery.

The first WestJet Boeing 767-300 will be the former QANTAS Airways 767-338 ER VH-OGJ (msn 25274) which became N324BC with Boeing Capital Corporation. It is due to become C-FOGJ on delivery to WestJet according to ch-aviation.

At this time, the carrier is planning to launch flights with the new Boeing 767s on December 11, 2015. The first two routes will be from Calgary to Honolulu and Kahului (Maui).

Cargojet paints its first aircraft for the Purolator contract

Cargojet Airways (Hamilton) has painted the first aircraft for the new Purolator contract.

Cargojet is taking over all Canada Post/Purolator flying after beating out Kelowna Flightcraft for the new contract.

On February 19, 2014 Cargojet announced they have been awarded the Domestic Air Cargo Network Services contract and have signed a Master Services Agreement with the Canada Post Group of Companies (CPGOC) for an initial seven-year (7) term with three (3) thirty-six month (36) renewal options. Projected revenues are estimated to be approximately one billion dollars during the initial seven-year agreement based on projected volumes.

Cargojet will provide comprehensive Canada-wide air cargo services for the Group of Companies, including Purolator’s national air cargo network. Cargojet’s domestic overnight network will be expanded and enhanced significantly to handle the additional volumes and provide a virtual dedicated Air Cargo Network to the Canada Post Group of Companies.

Purolator is Canada’s leading integrated freight and parcel solutions provider.

JAL to expand Wi-Fi service on its Boeing 767-300 ERs and 787-8 Dreamliners

Japan Airlines-JAL (Tokyo) has been introducing its in-flight Wi-Fi service since July 2012 with its Boeing 777-300 ERs. The airline will start to include Boeing 767-300 ERs and Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners to introducing its JAL SKY Wi-Fi service on more Europe, North America and long-haul Asia routes from March 3, 2015.

Under the theme of “Embrace new Challenges,” JAL is striving to introduce more innovative products and services to its customers.

From March 2015, JAL SKY Wi-Fi, in-flight internet service (paid service) will be expanded on both international and domestic routes. JAL will support onboard passengers to have seamless connectivity in the air just as they can on the ground.

Starting April 2015, JAL will provide customers with the latest Hollywood and Japanese movies and series of TV dramas on international routes. Well-received SKY MANGA will be available on the airline’s Boeing 787s in both Japanese and English in order to introducing the culture of Japanese manga.

On JAL domestic routes, Wi-Fi video service will be increased to 10 programs, and these free programs are available for watching through your own wireless LAN capable devices.

Florida West to be acquired by Worldwide Air Logistics Group, will become a sister airline of Southern Air

Florida West International Airways (2nd) (Miami) is being acquired by the Worldwide Air Logistics Group and will become a sister airline of Southern Air (2nd) (Cincinnati). Southern Air Holdings issued this statement:

Southern Air Holdings, Inc. has announced that its affiliate, Worldwide Air Logistics Group, Inc., will expand and diversify its ACMI and CMI air cargo service offerings through the acquisition of new fleet platforms, expanded markets and growth of existing operations.

Southern Air Inc., a critical and growing provider of airlift services for DHL Express and other customers, will continue its operations as a subsidiary of Worldwide. Southern Air’s headquarters will remain in Florence, Kentucky.

As part of its efforts to expand service capacity, Worldwide also announced its agreement to acquire Florida West International Airways, Inc., a leading provider of 767-300 ACMI air cargo services. Florida West operates scheduled and charter services, primarily in Latin America, the Caribbean and the U.S. for its primary customer LAN Cargo. Florida West is based in Miami, Florida, where its headquarters will remain. Worldwide’s acquisition of Florida West is subject to regulatory approval.

Southern Air and Florida West will remain separate air carrier operating companies. Each carrier will continue to deliver on a standalone basis the outstanding performance and superior service their customers have grown to expect.

SkyGreece Airlines to connect Toronto and Zagreb this summer

SkyGreece Airlines (Athens) has announced it will start weekly seasonal operations between Toronto (Pearson) and Zagreb, Croatia on June 22, 2015 with its 274-seat Boeing 767-300 ERs. The flights will operate until October 15.

Video: QANTAS Airways. On December 27, QANTAS Airways said goodbye to the final Boeing 767 in the QANTAS fleet. The 767 has been in the QF fleet since July 1985 and has carried nearly 168 million passengers on over 927,000 flights. The video includes two QF 767 First Officers for filming of the final flight.

American Airlines’ pilots approve the new five-year contract

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) has announced its 15,000 pilots have ratified the new contract. The company issued this statement:

The Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing 15,000 pilots at American Airlines, announced its members have approved a new five-year contract which provides immediate pay raises of 23 percent and subsequent annual raises of three percent for the next five years.

American Airlines President Scott Kirby said, “Today’s results provide immediate and significant pay increases to our pilots, and represent another step forward in our integration. We are especially pleased that American is in a position to support pay increases that recognize the contributions of our pilots this early in our integration. We also acknowledge and applaud the hard work and leadership of APA President Capt. Keith Wilson, the APA national officers, the negotiating teams from the APA and the company, as well as members of the APA Board.”

Business Air is grounded, passengers are stranded

Business Air (Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi) was grounded by the DCA of Thailand. The DCA ordered Business Air to suspend all operations on January 16, 2015, leaving more than 1,000 passengers stranded. The company was unable to pay its unpaid bills.

The company started operations in December 2009.

United Airlines adds 55 flights on 8 routes for the Super Bowl

United Airlines (Chicago) added more flights for football fans on top of regularly scheduled service to Phoenix from its hubs in Chicago (O’Hare), Denver, Houston (Bush Intercontinental), Los Angeles, Newark and San Francisco. The airline also added special new nonstop service, operating from January 29 to February 2, from Boston and Seattle/Tacoma to Phoenix for the Super Bowl. Several of the flights will be operated with Boeing 767 aircraft to accommodate the extra demand.
