Alitalia retires the Air One brand

Alitalia (2nd) (Rome) as planned, retired the Air Oneย (Rome) brand on September 30. As of today, the former Air One services are now being operated under the Alitalia brand although the parent will only operate some of the routes. Alitalia will assume some of the routes at the end of this month with their own branded aircraft per Airline Route.

Alitalia to phase out the Air One brand on October 1

Air One (Milan-Malpensa) will disappear as an airline and a brand on October 1. Parent Alitalia (2nd) (Rome) has decided to streamline its operations under one name and will retire the Air One brand on this date.

Air One commenced operations on November 23, 1995.ย On January 13, 2009, Air One officially became part of Alitalia Group with the intent to merge the two airlines.ย Air One in the meantime was rebranded as Air One “Smart Carrier”, Alitalia’s lower-cost subsidiary, operating a fleet of nine Airbus A320-200s to 35 destinations in 12 countries.

All Air One routes from Catania, Palermo and Venice will cease to operate on September 30, 2014 while all remaining services from Milan (Malpensa), Verona and Pisa will be dropped on October 30, 2014.

AirAsia India to start low-fare operations on June 12

AirAsia (airasia.com) (India) (Chennai) will commence low-fare operations on June 12 between Bangalore and Goa.

According to the Economic Times, AirAsia India “will charge passengers for check-in luggage. Cancelled tickets will not earn a refund. Passengers cannot eat their own food on board.”

AirAsia India is a joint venture, partnering AirAsia, Tata Sons Limited and Mr. Arun Bathia of Telestra Tradeplace Pvt. Ltd.

The entrance of AirAsia is expected to ignite a new fare war in India.

Iberia Group is adding new destinations

Iberia Group (Iberia and Iberia Express) (Madrid) has announced new routes from its Madrid hub.

Iberia Express has already added a new route to Stockholm (Arlanda) with two weekly flights. It will also add a new route to Amsterdam with twice-daily service starting on July 1.

Iberia Express is also increasing the number of flights to Berlin, Copenhagen, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt.

Iberia will add daily service to Istanbul starting on June 20. Santo Domingo will be added on September 1 with five weekly nonstop flights. Athens, which has been a summer route, will become a new year-round route.

Iberia is adding three weekly frequencies to Chicago (O’Hare) for the summer, two more to Panama City starting in July and additional frequencies to Brussels, Geneva, Munich, Rome, Tel Aviv, Venice and Zurich. Iberia has also resumed nonstop flights to Boston and Los Angeles and will also operate summer routes to Dubrovnik, St. Petersburg (Russia) and Zagreb.

AirAsia India takes delivery of its first Airbus A320

AirAsia (India) A320-200 WL VT-ATF (03)(Grd) TLS (Airbus)(LR)

AirAsia India (Chennai) has taken delivery of its first aircraft, an Airbus A320 (A320-216 VT-ATF, man 6015) equipped with Sharklets, becoming the newest operator of the type. VT-ATF was handed over yesterday (March 21). AirAsia India will take delivery of an additional nine aircraft for its initial fleet of 10 A320s, to serve Indiaโ€™s rapidly growing domestic air traffic. Powered by CFM engines, the aircraft is configured in an all economy layout with 180 seats.

The new airline is a joint venture between AirAsia Group, Tata Sons and Telstra Tradeplace.

AirAsia Indiaโ€™s fleet will be drawn from the 475 A320 Family aircraft ordered by the AirAsia Group. To date, almost a third of the aircraft on order have already been delivered and are flyingย  on AirAsia Groupโ€™s operations out of Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila and now Chennai. The AirAsia Group has also ordered 51 A330s and 10 A350 XWBs for its long haul affiliate AirAsia X.

AirAsia to unveil a Taylor Swift logo jet in June, net profit for 2013 falls, AirAsia India moves ahead

AirAsia (Malaysia) (Kuala Lumpur) according to Reuters, saw its fourth-quarter profit drop by 19 percent on higher expenses for fuel and aircraft maintenance.

Net profit for the three months ending on December 31, 2013 fell to 245.4 million ringgit ($75.05 million), while net profit for the full year of 2013 was 364.1 million ringgit ($111.4 million) compared to 789.6 million ringgit ($241.5 million) in 2012 due to the prior year’s gain from the disposal of its shares in Thai AirAsia joint venture.

Meanwhile, AirAsia Indiaย (Madras-Chennai) (above), the new joint venture with the Tata Group moves ahead. The DGCA has rejected the objections of other Indian airlines that new joint venture would disrupt Indian airline industry “equilibrium” according to The Economic Times.

In other news, AirAsiaย announced that it will be the official airline for seven-time Grammy winner Taylor Swiftโ€™s The Red Tour presented by Cornetto, which will be coming to southeast Asia this year. Taylor Swift will be bringing her tour to Southeast Asia in June 2014, with shows in Jakarta, Manila, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

As the official airline for Taylor Swiftโ€™s The Red Tour presented by Cornetto, AirAsia will unveil an exclusive Airbus A320 aircraft livery featuring international superstar Taylor Swift.

 

Siegtraund Teh, Group Chief Commercial Officer for AirAsia said, โ€œWe are very proud to be the official airline for Taylor Swiftโ€™s tour in Southeast Asia, which is aptly named The Red Tour, synonymous with AirAsiaโ€™s corporate colors. Taylor Swift fans can look forward to spotting the special Taylor Swift branded Airbus A320 painting the skies of Asean Red this coming June.โ€

Tony Fernandes to restart AirAsia Japan with new Japanese partners

AirAsia’s (AirAsia.com) (Malaysia) (Kuala Lumpur) CEO Tony Fernandes is taking another crack at the Japanese LCC market with the return of AirAsia Japan according to Bloomberg. Tony Fernandes was recently in Japan and stated he was lining up new Japanese partners.

Yoshinori Odagiri, the former CEO of AirAsia Japan will also lead the new carrier with Osamu Hata, previously a chief financial officer at Japanโ€™s Dell unit according to Bloomberg.

The previous AirAsia Japan (Tokyo-Narita)ย was aย low-fare joint venture with ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) that operated from August 1, 2012 through August 31, 2013. The old AirAsia Japan was the fifth subsidiary/joint venture of AirAsia.

ANA turn its portion of the joint venture of AirAsia Japan into Vanilla Air.ย Vanilla Air’s fleet will grow to six Airbus A320s by next month, eight by March 2015, and 10 by March 2016 according to ZipanguFlyer.

Vanilla Air relaunches operations under a new brand

Vanilla Air (formerly AirAsia Japan) (Tokyo-Narita) as planned, relaunched operations on December 20 under this new brand. The first routes were from Tokyo (Narita) to Naha, Okinawa and Tokyo (Narita) to Taipei (Taoyuan).

Tokyo (Narita) – Sapporo will be started next month followed by Tokyo (Narita) – Seoul (Incheon) in March 2014.

Vanilla Air is the low-cost subsidiary of ANA.

Etihad Airways again to the rescue: seriously negotiating to purchase 49% of Alitalia

Alitalia (2nd) (Rome) is reportedly in advanced discussions with Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi) about a possible sale of 49 percent of its shares to the fast-growing carrier. Etihad has been steadily adding a growing list of struggling airlines and turning them around creating a large profitable feeder network.

Alitalia is struggling to avoid another bankruptcy. Any purchase would require a radical remake of the loss-making Italian flag carrier. Are we ready for Alitalia 3?

Air France-KLM to decide today on the Alitalia cash injection

Air France (Paris) and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (Amsterdam) will decide today at a meeting of Alitalia’s (2nd) (Rome) shareholders if it will add any more capital into the struggling carrier. According to this report by Reuters, Alitalia’s shareholders will vote today on a $407 million capital increase to keep the Italian carrier flying. Alitalia was thrown a lifeline on Friday to allow it to keep flying through the weekend.

Le Monde reported Air France-KLM’s conditions now include “a new strategy, a halt to route expansion and no new aircraft purchases as Alitalia addresses its debts” according to Reuters.

Air France-KLM, which own 25 percent of Alitalia’s shares are unlikely to inject any more capital as the group is going through a painful restructuring.
