Spirit Airlines launches two new routes from Los Angeles

Spirit Airlines (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) today (July 9) introduced two new nonstop routes between Los Angeles and Kansas City and Baltimore-Washington, DC.

The new daily, nonstop service will connect Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) with Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). Spirit now offers 15 daily departures out of LAX to 11 cities, and will be adding more routes in the future. On August 20, Spirit will offer another nonstop route to and from Los Angeles to Atlanta’s Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). Additionally, the carrier will provide twice daily service to/from Oakland starting on November 12.

According to the airline, Spirit is the fastest growing airline in the United States. With a scheduled growth of approximately 30% this year, Spirit expects to keep expanding service by adding new destinations at the lowest available fares in the industry.

JetBlue to launch new service to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood from Baltimore/Washington and Philadelphia, will also expand to Mexico City

JetBlue Airways (New York) has announced plans for two new routes that will grow its presence in the Baltimore-Washington and Philadelphia metropolitan areas and continue its expansion in its focus cities in Orlando and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood.

Beginning November 12, JetBlue will operate new once daily service between Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) and Orlando International Airport (MCO) — the same day JetBlue launches previously announced service between Baltimore/Washington and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood. Within the National Capital Region, JetBlue also operates flights out of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).

Beginning November 19, JetBlue will operate twice daily service between Philadelphia (PHL) and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood (FLL). Philadelphia is one of the largest markets JetBlue currently does not serve from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood and will play a part in its growth towards 100 daily flights to meet increasing customer demand in South Florida.

JetBlue will serve both routes with its Airbus A320 aircraft.

JetBlue also announced plans to begin flying to Mexico City’s Benito Juarez International Airport, one of the largest markets in the Americas. Mexico City will be JetBlue’s second destination in Mexico and its 35th in the Latin America and Caribbean region, where JetBlue continues to expand its presence as a leading U.S. airline.

Daily service to Mexico City International Airport (MEX) will launch on October 1 from JetBlue’s two focus cities in Florida, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Orlando International Airport (MCO).

Service from Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and Orlando to Mexico City will operate in the evening, with flights back to the U.S. from Mexico City offered in the early morning.

JetBlue will serve both routes with its Airbus A320 aircraft.

JetBlue continues to grow its footprint in Latin America and the Caribbean. The airline recently announced plans to serve Quito, Antigua, and Grenada, and to offer its successful Mint experience from New York to Aruba and Barbados on Saturdays between November 7, 2015 and April 30, 2016, and daily between December 19, 2015 and January 4, 2016.

Wow Air is welcomed at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)

Wow Air (Keflavik) as planned, started its low-fare service from Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) to Keflavik (KEF) (near Reykjavik) yesterday (May 8). Initially the new route will operate four days a week with the new Airbus A321s. On June 11 this will expand to five days a week. The carrier also started service to Boston on March 27.

Alaska Airlines to fly south to Costa Rica from Los Angeles, will also add LAX – BWI service

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) will chart new territory this fall when it adds new service between Los Angeles and Costa Rica’s two major international airports, further strengthening its southern California focus city. The eight weekly flights from Los Angeles to San Jose (SJO) and Liberia/Guanacaste (LIR), Costa Rica, are scheduled to begin October 31 and November 1 respectively, and are in addition to new daily service the carrier will add on September 9 between Los Angeles and Baltimore.

Southwest Airlines launches historic routes from Baltimore/Washington and Houston Hobby to Costa Rica and Aruba

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) yesterday (March 7) inaugurated two international routes from Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and William P. Hobby Airport in Houston. Each of the new routes is longer than 2,000 miles each-way and marks historic milestones for the carrier both by connecting Central America to the Southwest network of destinations and by offering its longest-ever nonstop scheduled service from any of Southwest’s Texas Triangle of original cities of Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston.

Southwest Airlines now operates nonstop service between:

San Jose, Costa Rica, and Baltimore/Washington on a once daily basis, and
Aruba and Houston (Hobby) seasonally, once every Saturday through Aug. 8, 2015

At Houston’s Hobby Airport, Southwest Employees celebrated the first Aruba-bound morning departure. Later, Customers on the first inbound international flight deplaned directly into a celebration in the main domestic concourse, following their U.S. Customs and Border Protection Preclearance processed prior to departing the Caribbean island. This is the first-ever international flying offered from Houston Hobby. This October, Southwest is scheduled to complete the construction of a $156 million international terminal project which will give Houstonians and Southwest Customers from across the network access to more international destinations.

Southwest Airlines flight 602 from Baltimore/Washington to San Jose, Costa Rica, brought 143 Customers and the Company’s legendary personality and value to Central America for the first time in the 44-year history of the largest domestic carrier* in the United States. Dozens of people came to Juan Santamaria International Airport outside San Jose at the invitation of the Costa Rica Tourism Board to welcome the historic arrival in the lush country known for its natural beauty and adventure tourism.

Wow Air (Keflavik) has moved forward its start of service from Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) to Keflavik (KEF) (near Reykjavik) from June 4 to May 8. Initially the new route will operate four days a week with Airbus A320s. On June 11 this will expand to five days a week. The carrier will also operate to Boston starting on March 27.

Frontier Airlines to pull out of Eugene, Oregon

Frontier Airlines (2nd) (Denver) has announced it will end its three times weekly seasonal service to Eugene, Oregon at the end of November.

Previously Frontier Airlines announced on February 18, 2013 that it was launching new seasonal service from its Denver, Colorado (DEN) hub to Eugene, Oregon (EUG) starting on May 16, 2013.

Under the new leadership group, Frontier had previously announced it was ending service to smaller cities including Bakersfield, Fresno, Santa Barbara and now Eugene.

Alaska launches Seattle/Tacoma-Baltimore/Washington flights today

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) launched daily round-trip service today (September 2) between Seattle/Tacoma (SEA) and Baltimore/Washington (BWI).

With the new BWI flight, coupled with the airline’s Detroit service starting on September 4 and Albuquerque service starting on September 18, Alaska Airlines will offer 273 peak-day departures to 78 destinations from Seattle/Tacoma (SeaTac), more than three times that of any other airline.

Alaska Airlines:

Envoy Air’s pilots fail to reach an agreement with the American Airlines Group

Envoy Air’s (American Eagle) (Dallas/Fort Worth) pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), failed to reach a new agreement with the American Airlines Group (Dallas/Fort Worth) for a new contract. The group had approached the union about reopening discussions on a new contract. Discussions broke down on August 21. According to the union in a message to its members by Bill Sprague, “The effort began with informal discussions to identify and attempt to resolve the areas of the failed TA that were unacceptable to our group. We focused on finding solutions to guarantee that the company would re-fleet our carrier while respecting the value we provide as professionals. Identifying the core issues was easy. Finding mutually acceptable solutions was extremely difficult. The MEC met three times and spent countless hours on conference calls to eventually arrive at a proposal that satisfied those requirements.

On Wednesday, company executives rejected that proposal. Their stated intent is to continue seeking lower feed costs at other Fee for Departure carriers, as they did with Compass.”

The union chairman continued, “The state of our current daily operation shows an inability to attract a sufficient number of recruits, but it also shows that many Envoy pilots are moving onwards and upwards in their aviation careers. In their efforts to operate an airline of our size while lacking the necessary tools to safely do so, the company has found many ways to violate the current collective bargaining agreement. The MEC and leadership are dedicated to protecting and defending the contract. Our contract remains in place. We will enforce it and continue to pursue every opportunity to improve it.

The pilots of Envoy have made it clear: now is time to make this airline an attractive place to work and that responsibility falls squarely on the shoulders of upper management. This action is essential to ensure the long-term success of our company.”

Envoy Air currently operates more than the 220 aircraft on about 1,300 daily flights to more than 170 destinations in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. The company’s more than 14,000 employees provide regional flight service to American Airlines under the American Eagle brand and livery as well as ground handling services for approximately 15 airlines, including American.

Envoy Air is headquartered in North Texas with hubs in New York, Chicago, Miami, Dallas/Fort Worth and Los Angeles. The company was founded in 1998 as American Eagle Airlines, Inc. following the merger of several smaller regional carriers to create one the largest regional airlines in the world. On April 15, 2014 the company changed its name to Envoy Air to distinguish the company for the American Eagle brand, under which several carriers operate regional flight service for American.

American Airlines Group is likely to continue to assign new aircraft to other American Eagle carriers as Envoy Air reduces in size unless the two parties resolve their differences.

Southwest Airlines starts international flights today

Southwest Airlines (Dallas) today (July 1) launched an international service by inaugurating service to three Caribbean destinations from three of its US gateway cities. Southwest Airlines’ first international departure, flight WN 1804 from Baltimore/Washington to Oranjestad, Aruba, departed on time at 8:30 am EDT, closely followed by Southwest flight WN 906 to Montego Bay, Jamaica, where its first-ever scheduled international arrival was planned for just after 11 am EDT. A midday flight from Baltimore/Washington to Nassau/Paradise Island also brings Southwest Airlines to The Bahamas.

Customers on the carrier’s inaugural international flights from Baltimore/Washington joined those in two other gateway cities of Atlanta, and Orlando who celebrated alongside Employees with commemorative beach balls, snorkels and masks.

At the Company’s corporate headquarters in Dallas, Employees staffed a command center in the pre-dawn hours to monitor operational performance and new technology systems developed in partnership with Amadeus, a leading technology provider to the global travel industry. Its Altea suite of technology solutions is powering Southwest’s reservations, inventory, and departure control functions for international flying.
