Delta expands at Los Angeles International Airport

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) will increase service at Los Angeles International Airport with daily year-round and seasonal service to 14 destinations, including eight new markets. The additional service adds 12 percent more daily seats in the market.

The new and expanded Los Angeles service between the following cities (start dates) includes:

  • New daily service toย Nashvilleย and three daily flights toย Seattle/Tacomaย (April 8)
  • New intra-West service to two markets:ย San Jose, Californiaย with four daily flights (July 1) andย Spokane, Washingtonย with one daily flight (June 10)
  • New summer seasonal service to three markets:ย Bostonย will operate daily (June 10),ย Anchorage, Alaskaย will operate three times weekly Friday-Sunday (June 21) andย Bozeman, Montanaย will operate Saturday only service (June 22)
  • New Central America service toย San Jose, Costa Ricaย (July 1)
  • Expanding current intra-West service with one additional flight toย Oakland, California,ย Phoenixย andย Sacramento, Californiaย for a total of five (June 10)
  • Service toย Puerto Vallarta, Mexicoย will increase frequency from Saturday only to daily (July 1) and one additional Saturday flight will be added toย Guadalajara, Mexicoย (July 6)
  • Expanding service toย New Orleansย with one additional flight for a total of three daily (September 4)
  • Full flat-bed seating in BusinessEliteย on four of the seven flights to New York-JFK this summer
  • Upgrading Las Vegas aircraft to six daily mainline flights in June

By summer, Delta will operate 118 peak-day departures to 40 nonstop destinations, including Sydney and Tokyo, from Los Angeles. All Los Angeles service offers customers the option of first class, Economy Comfort or economy seating, along with in-flight Wi-Fi.

Customers flying from Los Angeles also benefit from Delta’s agreements with domestic partner Alaska Airlines and key international carriers, including WestJet and Virgin Australia, as well as Sky Team partners Air France/KLM, Alitalia, Korean Air, AeroMexico, China Airlines China Eastern, China Southern and Aeroflot.

In 2012, Alaska Airlines relocated to Los Angeles International Airport’s Terminal 6 as part of a Delta co-location strategic partnership. Customers of both airlines benefit from shorter connecting times between Delta’s operation at Terminal 5 and 6 while creating more international, transcontinental and West Coast travel options.

Additionally, Delta expects to begin codesharing on flights between Los Angeles and London-Heathrow airport with partner Virgin Atlantic Airways later this year.

Los Angeles is currently one of several Delta facilities undergoing significant renovations to check-in and arrival areas as well as jet bridges to improve the airline’s operational performance and overall customer experience.

Delta to expand service to Montana for the summer season

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) will offer new and expanded summer service from Montana to Atlanta and Los Angeles, effective on June 22, 2013.

The new service changes include:

  • Atlanta to Bozeman expanded from twice per week to three weekly
  • Atlanta to Kalispell expanded from once per week to twice weekly
  • New Saturday service from Atlanta to Missoula
  • New Saturday service from Los Angeles to Bozeman

Delta’s new service between Atlanta and Bozeman, Kalispell and Missoula, will be operated with Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The fourth flight, between Bozeman and Los Angeles, will be operated by Delta Connection carrier SkyWest Airlines (St. George) using a 76-seat two-class Bombardier CRJ900.

Returning summer seasonal service between Atlanta and Bozeman will operate Wednesdays and Saturdays on a Boeing 757-200, while Atlanta-Kalispell service will operate Saturdays on Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Delta has served Montana since 1927 and offers more flights statewide than any other airline. During the peak summer travel season, Delta serves eight Montana communities with more than 1,300 monthly departures and offers 54 percent more seats than its largest competitor. In 2012, the airline carried 1.3 million passengers to and from Montana.

Montana markets Delta provides service include: Butte, Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls, Helena, Kalispell, Missoula and West Yellowstone.

United Airlines to operate summer seasonal service from Newark to both Anchorage and Traverse City

United Airlines (Chicago) will launch summer-season service from its Newark Liberty International Airport hub to Anchorage, Alaska, and Traverse City, Michigan. The new flights will offer the only nonstop service between the New York area and Anchorage, and the only nonstop service between Newark Liberty and Traverse City.

United will operate the Anchorage service on Saturdays from July 6, 2013 through August 31, 2013, using Boeing 757 aircraft. United Express service to Traverse City will operate on weekends from July 5, 2013 through Aug. 25, 2013, with 50-seat regional jet aircraft flown by ExpressJet Airlines (Atlanta).

Delta Air Lines to add three summer routes from Los Angeles starting in June

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) will reintroduce three routes for the summer season from Los Angeles in June per Airline Route. Anchorage will be served twice-weekly with Boeing 757-200s effective June 21. Boston will be flown daily also with 757-200s starting on June 10. Finally Spokane service will be added with daily service starting on June 10 and will be served by Bombardier CRJ900s operated by SkyWest Airlines (St. George).

Thomas Cook to merge Condor, Thomas Cook Belgium and Thomas Cook UK into one airline on March 1

Thomas Cook Group (London) has announced it will merge Condor Flugdienst (Frankfurt), Thomas Cook Airlines (UK) (Manchester) and Thomas Cook Airlines (Belgium) (Brussels) into one airline ย within the group on March 1.

The merger is part of Thomas Cook’s turnaround plan. It is unclear if the historic Condor name will be retired.

Air China to add Geneva on May 7

Air China (Beijing) has announced it will add Genevaย starting on May 7, 2013. The flag carrier will offer nonstop four-times weekly Beijing – Geneva service using the Airbus A330-200. That will make Air China the only carrier offering nonstop rotations between Beijing and Geneva. The Beijing – Geneva route will become East Asia’s first direct route to Geneva, offering an additional flight option to travelers to and from Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Manila.

The flight numbers of the Beijing – Geneva service will be CA 861/862. The four-times weekly flight leaves Beijing at 13:30 and arrives at 18:25 in Geneva on the same day. The return flight is expected to take off from Geneva at 20:25 and arrive at the Beijing Capital International Airport at 12:55 the next day.

The Chinese carrier is also retiring the Boeing 757-200 from international service on March 31, 2013 on the Chengdu-Karachi route per Airline Route.

Ryan International decides to liquidate, shuts down and terminates all employees

Ryan International Airlines (Rockford) yesterday (January 11) reversed its bankruptcy reorganization path from reorganization (Chapter 11) to liquidation (Chapter 7). The charter airline suddenly shut down and laid off all of its employees. The airline is still talking with prospective investors but it is a long shot for the airline to restart operations.

The airline went into Chapter 11 reorganization in March 2012. Previously the company was established by Ron Ryan in Wichita, KS and started operations on March 3, 1973 as Ryan Aviation. In 2005 the company was sold to the Rubloff Development Group which moved the company to Rockford (near Chicago) in 2006.

American Airlines and US Airways move one step closer to a merger with this announcement

American Airlines (Dallas/Fort Worth) will soon make a decision on whether it will proceed with the proposed merger with US Airways (Phoenix). The two airlines have issued this joint statement which brings a probable merger one step closer with a new agreement between its pilots:

American Airlines and US Airways, with participation of committee counsel for the Unsecured Creditors Committee, are pleased that they have completed discussions with the Allied Pilots Association and US Airline Pilots Association intended to develop a framework for the terms of employment for pilots, as well as a process for pilot integration, in the event of a merger between AA and US during restructuring.ย  This memorandum of understanding was approved by the Allied Pilots Association’s Board of Directors and by USAPA’s Board of Pilot Representatives.ย  This memorandum of understanding will assist all of the stakeholders, including the Boards of AMR and US Airways, in making an informed decision as to whether a merger should ultimately be pursued.ย  The MOU is one of several elements to be considered before a decision on a merger can be made.ย  Details regarding the MOU are still covered by the terms of a non-disclosure agreement so they cannot be further disclosed at this time.ย

Icelandair commits for 12 Boeing 737 MAX 8s and 737 MAX 9s

Icelandair (Keflavik) and Boeing (Chicago) have announced a commitment today for 12 737 MAXs, valued at more than $1.2 billion at list prices. The commitment by the Icelandic carrier includes 737 MAX 8s and 9s. Boeing looks forward to working with Icelandair to finalize the details, at which time the order will be posted as a firm order to the Boeingย Orders & Deliveries website.

The 737 MAX is a new-engine variant of the world’s best-selling airplane and builds on the strengths of today’s Next-Generation 737. The 737 MAX incorporates the latest-technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market. Airlines operating the 737 MAX will see a 13 percent fuel-use improvement over today’s most fuel-efficient single-aisle airplanes.

The 737 MAX also features the new Boeing Sky Interior. According to Boeing, “the sleek interior boasts modern lines, a spacious cabin with more headroom and LED lighting that offers vibrant color options.”

Icelandair Group currently operates an all-Boeing fleet of 23 757-200/300 airplanes for both its passenger and cargo operations. The Icelandic carrier has used the geographical location of its Keflavik-based hub mid-way between North America and Europe, as an opportunity to build an ever-growing network of more than 25 international destinations.

El Al retires its last Boeing 757 today

El Al Israel Airlines (Tel Aviv) today (November 26) operated its final Boeing 757 revenue flight from Tel Aviv to Barcelona and back per AIrline Route. The type was introduced by El Al in November 1987.
