Bloomberg: United struggles with its computer system, canceling flights and stranding pilots

United Airlines (Chicago) is still struggling with merging the two companies and its computer system assigning flights with crews according to this report by Bloomberg. Almost 1,500 flights were cancelled since December 30, mostly due to severe weather. However some of the cancellations were due to a system which often crashed. The problems with crew scheduling started when the airline shifted its 10,200 pilots to the scheduling system used previously by Continental Airlines. Some of the information was apparently out of date, still showing retired or deceased pilots according to the report.

Air Lituanica to start Paris CDG service on February 14, 2014, Estonian Air cancels the contract

Air Lituanica (Vilnius) is planning to launch a new route to Paris (CDG) starting on February 14, 2014. The new route will initially be an extension of the Prague route four days a week but the destination will become nonstop service after April 27.

Schedule:

Air Lituanica Vilnius-Paris Schedule

All Air Lituanica flights are currently being operated by Estonian Air‘s (Talinn) Embraer 170s but this relationship seems to be unravelling. Estonian Air has cancelled the contract with Air Lituanica and issued this statement:

As part of winding down flight operations in Lithuania connected to the termination of its contractual relationship with Vilnius-based Air Lituanica, Estonian Air has decided to service the Vilnius โ€“ Berlin route only through December 15, 2013 and Vilnius โ€“ Amsterdam through January 6, 2014.

“After Estonian Air was forced to terminate its contractual relationship with Air Lituanica due to repeated breaches by Air Lituanica, we have no intentions to serve these routes independently in long term. We are doing everything to fulfill our obligations to ticket holders and minimize any interruptions related to their travel plans,โ€œ said Jan Palmรฉr, the CEO of Estonian Air.

Only Estonian Air tickets (with number 960 – XXXXXXXXX) and partner airline tickets, such as KLM, Delta, Hahn Air, are be accepted on Estonian Air flights.

Estonian Air flight tickets on Vilnius-Berlin flights after December 15, 2013 and on Vilnius โ€“ Amsterdam flights after January 6, 2014 will be refunded.

Who will replace Estonian Air? Can Air Lituanica survive this cancellation?

LOT Polish Airlines will not seek any more public aid, will drop underperforming destinations during the winter season

LOT Polish Airlines (Warsaw) will not apply in September to the Treasury for payment of the second tranche of public aid. According to the airline, this is possible thanks to the promising results of the Restructuring Plan consistently implemented in the Company. At the same time LOT is introducing the flight schedule for the winter season 2013/2014 to its reservation systems. A new network is in line with the Restructuring Plan submitted by the Ministry of the Treasury to the European Commission. It is also a result of necessary compensation required by the European Commission.

The first tranche of aid for LOT was paid in December of last year. Disbursement of the second – in accordance with the Restructuring Plan submitted by the Ministry of the Treasury to the European Commission – was planned for August this year. Meanwhile, the Company has not applied for the second tranche in August and will not apply for it in September. An amount of the second tranche will be carefully assessed when the Company will apply to the Treasury for its payment. Perhaps this will happen only in October.

According to its underlying principles, the Company will achieve sustained profitability starting from 2015.

Consistently implemented restructuring measures include, among others, the network of destinations for the winter season. These changes are in line with the objectives of the Restructuring Plan submitted in June by the Ministry of Treasury to the European Commission. They are also a result of necessary compensation required by the European Commission. Within planned changes, destinations from Warsaw to Bydgoszcz, Rome and Stuttgart will be suspended from the beginning of the winter season 2013. In the coming months, passengers will also not find in the network flights to Beirut, Cairo and Nice, which are seasonal destinations. At the same time, like last winter, flights with the aircraft staying overnight from Warsaw to Stockholm will be suspended. This means two, not three flights a day to the Swedish capital.

The Polish carrier also decided to suspend flights from Warsaw to Zurich, Helsinki and Dusseldorf. These destinations did not generate enough transfer traffic for other LOT flights from Warsaw, especially the long haul which are key to the company’s long-term strategy.

Since, in accordance with assumptions, LOT focuses on expansion of its hub in Warsaw, there will be also less flights from Polish regional airports. In winter 2013, LOT aircrafts will not fly from Cracow to Frankfurt, from Poznan to Munich and from Katowice to Munich.

At the same time, flights from Warsaw to Yerevan, Athens and Belgrade will be unchanged in the coming winter season. Belgrade, one of the strongest destinations in the network of the Polish carrier, will continue to support the flow of transit passengers in their further travel to North America or other European ports. And Athens will remain in the flight schedule due to Greek Presidency of the European Union, which will begin on ย January 1, 2014.

The remaining 737-400s are likely to be retired this winter with this schedule reduction. Boeing 737-45D SP-LLF (msn 28752) approaches Belgium for landing in the updated 2011 livery.

Austrian Airlines improves its profitability in the second quarter to $27.9 million

Austrian Airlines (Vienna) improved its turnaround by reporting an operating profit of $27.9 million in the second quarter. The company has issued this financial report:

Austrian Airlines, Austriaโ€˜s largest domestic airline, succeeded in significantly improving its earnings in the second quarter of the 2013 financial year to EUR 21 million ($27.9 million) (Q2 2012: EUR 12 million). This strong increase was primarily achieved by cost reduction measures. โ€œThe tough restructuring work in the past year is clearly reflected in the performance figures. We are making good progress, and maintain our goal to achieve a turnaround in 2013โ€œ, says Jaan Albrecht, Chief Executive Officer of Austrian Airlines.

In the previous year the transfer of flight operations to Tyrolean Airways had considerably increased earnings by EUR 82 million. The subsequent application of the new accounting standard IAS 19 increased these one-off effects by an additional EUR 136 million. For these reason, the operating result in the second quarter declined from the prior-year level of EUR 230 million to EUR 21 million in 2013. However, adjusting business results to take account of the one-off effects, the operating result actually rose by 80.1% or EUR 9 million.

However, the positive Q2 2013 results were not sufficient to generate an overall profit in the first half-year. Nevertheless, the accumulated loss of minus EUR 56 million in the winter quarter from January to March 2013 could be reduced to minus EUR 35 million. In the previous year, the half-year operating result amounted to EUR 163 million, or minus EUR 55 million when adjusting the results for the one-off effects.

First half-year 2013 performance indicators in detail:

Total operating revenues in the first half-year 2013 declined by 3.4 percent to EUR 1,043 million (H1 2012: EUR 1,080 million). The operating result for the first half of 2013 amounted to minus EUR 35 million (H1 2012: 163 million / H1 2012 adjusted: minus EUR 55 million). The main reason for the improved earnings is the success in limiting cost increases. Operating expenditures were reduced by five percent, from EUR 1,135 million to EUR 1,078 million. Capacity utilization of the aircraft also improved.

Fewer aircraft in use, better capacity utilization on board

In the first half of 2013, Austrian Airlines carried a total of 5.3 million passengers. This represents a slight decline of 3 percent from the prior-year level. The underlying reason is that Austria Airlines reduced the number of aircraft in use in its medium-haul fleet by four. In addition, up to two long-haul aircraft were taken out of service in the period January to June 2013, and equipped with the new long haul cabin. Capacity in available seat kilometers (ASK) was reduced by 7.4 percent. At the same time, Austrian Airlines succeeded in improving the passenger load factor to 75.7 percent (H1 2012: 74 percent). Capacity utilization on the new route to Chicago was already at a disproportionately high level in the second quarter of 2013. On balance, Austrian Airlines flew 66,325 flights in the first six months of 2013, or an average of 363 flights per day.

The number of people employed by the Austrian Airlines Group including its fully consolidated subsidiaries totaled 6,244 employees at the reporting date of June 30, 2013 (June 30, 2012: 6,686 employees).

Austrian Airlines continued to achieve a top performance with respect to reliability and punctuality, although the tough, long winter led to a slight deterioration. Its punctuality on departure was 86.6 percent, and punctuality on arrival was at a level of 84.8 percent. Accordingly, the punctuality of Austrian Airlines flights continued to surpass the European average. The regularity of flight operations amounted to 98.6 percent. According to ETB News, Austrian Airlines ranked sixth in the world among all airlines in June 2013 with respect to punctuality (Source: http://www.etravelblackboard.com/article/145383/the-most-punctual-airline-is).
